As a musician and anime nerd as well, I love this! You should consider discussing the band behind the anime intro! Like going over the story behind artists like Creepy Nuts or Maximum the Hormone. Keep it up brother!
I’d argue there are some songs that are 100% acid jazz, but a lot of it also isn’t fully jazz and is more like a blend. I’ve asked my dad, musician of 40 years about this opinion. Tracks like Whims of Fate and Crossroads are defo jazz, but yeah, Life will Change or beneath the mask I’d agree with you
Wdym no Jazz ? As a musician yourself you should know that Jazz is more of an umbrella term, there's multiple sub gender of Jazz such as Hard bop, Cool, soul jazz, Jazz funk ect..; The type of jazz you hear a lot in Persona 5 is called Acid Jazz, saying there's no jazz in Persona 5 makes no sense whatsoever. Pretty disappointing to say the least. Even more coming from a musician. It doesn’t matter if he contradicted himself to a certain degree later on in the video, he stated: « I would argue there’s no Jazz in any of those games, especially Persona 5 », debate is closed, he’s wrong. For people who think it was irony: It wasn’t irony. Why am I saying that ? Because later in the video he says: « Acid Jazz is not technically Jazz » which is simply not true, if we were to follow his reasoning most if not all Jazz sub gender wouldn’t be Jazz, which is not the case, and that’s why we call it sub gender, that’s basic knowledge for anyone, even more for a musician student. And don’t tell me it’s just his opinion because there’s no opinion when things are factual, you either accept the facts or keep yourself in your delusion.
@@akpade when he says "you should check out the video" it doesn't mean "watch only the first minute". Just 3:44 in, and you would have noticed the mention of "Acid Jazz"
Acid Jazz is such a genre. The visual predecessor to Persona 5, Catherine & Catherine (there's a great video about it somewhere on RUclips) has a version of the opening song called "Yo - Acid Jazz Ver." This was how I found out P5's real genre, and I'm STILL JEALOUS OF JOKER for being such a cool guy, both personally and socially 😭
For all yall looking for that Persona 5 sound, definitely check out Jamiroquai's Return of the Space Cowboy. That's the album with the strongest resemblance imo
1:27 You dont know anything about the first 3 games so why call them half baked? -"H*lter is in persona 2" is so overused and it's not even correct if you actually played the game. -Shin megami tensei: persona was only called that in the Western release of the psp remaster. It's not hard to research dude lmao
The soundtracks of the 3 most recent Persona have had dominant musical themes as distinct as their color overtones. P3 was all about the blue, which fits its slick moody aesthetic. It also mostly takes place in a bustling early 2000's metropolian district, so a hip hop vibe makes perfect sense. Lotus Juice is going hard in the verses of Mass Destruction and Iwatodai Dorm. P4 is yellow, or perhaps "golden" if you will. Kind of like a sunny day in the sleepy rural hamlet of Inaba. It's also a complete tonal whiplash from the towering skyscrapers blocking out the daylight and brooding dark hour exploration of Tartarus in P3. The music here is much, much more instrumental - guitar driven, with some more rebellious lyrical themes; think I'll Face Myself and Reach Out to the Truth. As for P5, well, she's definitely the lady in red of the three and she's most at home crooning in a speakeasy from the roaring 20's. Naturally, the themes for most of the tracks are extremely important in jazz: Rhythmic syncopation, swing time and complex tonality. These musical components so entrenched in the the presentation as a whole that, shortly after the original launch, someone on the internet set the intro animation of P5 to the music from the opening of Cowboy Bebop, and as far as I could tell, with very few or no edits at all to the timing of the imagery. It just worked. Perfectly. While the style would certainly be classified as more acid jazz and jazz/rock fusion overall, Wake Up, Get Up, Get Out There is just a straight up, flat-out big band tune and it's freaking glorious. There are few themes that are pretty omnipresent "meat and potatoes" of the musicality, like the catchy J-Pop vocals and general "bounce" of the tempo as well as the iconic and hauntingly beautiful Aria of the Soul, but these are kind of like chocobos in a Final Fantasy thematically speaking: They just kind of need to be there, but nobody's complaining. As a guitarist who played in metal bands in addition to studying western classical musical theory and jazz theory/guitar performance in college, this is why I like the soundtracks of P4 and P5 just a little more than P3 (though P3 was my first introduction to the series and probably is still my favorite game of the three entries we're taking about here). It's definitely worth mentioning that there's a ton of variation in all three scores and some of those outliers are among my favorites. Unavoidable Battle in P3, Backside of the TV in P4 and Rivers in the Desert from P5 all come to mind. I think we also need to talk about the Persona Q soundtrack too. It was so freaking good! Everything I love about the music of 3,4 and 5 baked into one and surgically implanted in the pleasure center of my brain. Maze of Life? Light the Fire up in the Night? Laser Beam? Holy crap - EPIC. This was a fun video.
Reminds me on Adam Neely's video on Laufey, who's been marketed and regarded as the Gen-Z mediator to jazz while having more in common with mid-century popstars (Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald etc.) who, while frequently collaborating and associating with the jazz community, were more for the general listening audience, especially as jazz standards grew less and less popular with the rise of rock n roll, becoming the nostalgic bygone it's regarded as today, which the artist herself seeks to emulate without really engaging too seriously with jazz as a genre In persona's case you can definitely hear the variety of musical inspiration used, from classical to hip-hop and acid jazz and so forth, and I'd expand on the point you make in the video - Meguro uses his inherent j-music brush and dips it in uniquely specific sonic palettes for each persona game, not just to infuse it with the same vibrant spirit, but also to pull us deeper into each game's atmosphere by using music people draw from People know persona 3 for its moody, urbane feel and seemingly callous protagonist, and the whole "too cool for school" vibe of hip-hop, and what it represented during its 80s/90s really pairs with it, as an example, but you would never call "Mass Destruction" hip-hop because it has rap - its just a j-pop pastiche! Meguro (and by extension, lotus juice) have a lot of respect for the music they pull from, but calling persona "jazz" (looking at you, persona 5) really diminishes the perception of both the music-making legacy of jazz and how genuinely awesome the persona sound is as it's own thing Its not jazz, it's PERSONA!
Thing is, people want easy answers. They want someone to explain something really complicated and difficult to phrase in 5 minutes or less. And sometimes you can't do that, because there are no hard answers and everything is just kind of wishy-washy and needs to be figured out by trial end error. Ngl, that's exactly why I got here. I wanted an easy answer too, but classifying Meguro's scores as one genre or sub-genre just isn't going to cut it.
bro acid jazz is totally jazz imo - just one of many ways in which it's blossomed over time. jazz as a genre is about breaking conventions and creating a new status quo .. i don't think it's entirely fair to say acid jazz isn't a natural progression of this concept. acid jazz was built on the work of black musicians the same way that trad. jazz was. it would not exist without the fusion of trad. jazz, soul, and hip hop. jazz is more than just a style or sound - it's a musical movement
Whether it's the 80s electronic piano, that classical like regular piano, the persona 3 reverby guitars, the electric rock guitars, the organ, the drumkit, and chill electric bass guitar all make these games so distinct. I'd argue persona music or Japanese music which there's a lot of stuff that includes these instrumental elements are in a league of their own and they are quite special. Because of it I hope to travel to Japan and even meet and work with some of these musicians.
Listen to the mainstream music in japan of whatever year each one came out and it will sound like Persona. 2006 M-Flo sounds like Persona 3 Also Maya is best girl. "Let's positive thinking!"

Jazz is an umbrella term. What is this parallel universe I have stumbled into? Lol. Dont get me wrong I genuinely appreciate the effort and the care that went into this! As a very avid jazz fan, i just find myself frustrated by your phrasing. Perhaps the fact that you had to keep things concise here is why the phrasing feels off to me, i don't know.
I was mainly disappointed with Persona 5’s OST because when people mentioned Jazz when talking about the OST I was expecting contemporary/free jazz. Stuff like “Pressure Point” by Duncan Lamont or anything by Ornette Coleman. So when playing the game, the OST was good but it was not what I was expecting.
Jazz was always clashing of cultures and their music originally starting with afroamerican blues and european classical music which then spread to latin america which gave us bossa nova back to USA and then Japan to create Jazz fusion and acid jazz. What best describes jazz is swing tempo, spontaneity and ability of this music to be interpreted in different ways as the artists sees fit with solos. The last part can't be implemented due to the fact songs in the game aren't quite adaptive but pure recordings so yes a lot of songs in Persona soundtrack are Jazz, not bebop, not avant-garde not modal jazz but fusion and acid jazz. Jazz is meant to change not stay the same that's why it exists, because someone wanted to defy the classical music standards that europe was so akin to.
It's funny I just started P5 Royal for the first time and my I was having a mental breakdown after I found out the game doesn't have any jazz songs. I thought I was having a stroke bc the one fact I knew before playing the game is that it had jazz in it. I guess the joke about cultureless zoomers is even funnier with this knowledge.
