  • This video is about embedding a BigMessOfWires Floppy Emu in a standard APPLE II Floppy Disk Drive.
I had a spare , broken , APPLE II floppy disk drive and I recycled it by adapting a Floppy Emu disk drive emulator to match the original floppy drive look as much as possible by designing and 3D printing a faceplate adapter.
Target of this mod is an APPLE II Plus I regularly use to play.

I love this idea! As soon as I have a drive that I can't repair I think I will try this.

This is a really nice idea. I've got a parts Disk II drive that I'm considering doing your idea with. Thank you for sharing!

Nice job but not sure why you didn't just remove the whole mechanism and use the empty shell. Also I know it would take extra work but would it be possible for the 3D printed piece to flip open to expose the SD card. With an empty shell you can 3D print a mount bracket support to make that work. Future project maybe...

Hi! I did not empty the drive because I did want to keey its weight as the original one to have the same weight feeling while handling it. About exposing the SD, you can check RUclips user "polymatt" that evolved my project adding a front sd slot in the 3D printed drive lid. You can check his video here:
      ruclips.net/video/yvodrNVtXbw/видео.html
He also published 3D STL files here:

      Thanks for watching my video!

This is some great work! I wonder if you would ever be able to wire it so the stepper motor would run as if it were reading the sectors so you would be able to preserve the classic disk sound.

Floppy emu has an optional module to simulate the drive clicking sound. It's not quite the same thing however shop.bigmessowires.com/products/noisy-disk

@@BitSplits yeah it’s definitely not the same. Amazing job - I’m going to try this one myself!

I mean you can do whatever you want but... cmon dude. Free and open source. Forget about the $5000 you'll make - I just ... don't agree.
