They were lucky with the guide. Never have I experienced one that explains all the interesting facts at once. She knew the history and geology of the glacier as well as the best technical approach. The fact that she is beautiful too almost made her unsympathetic.

I'm so glad that I am still young and in high school where I can watch these videos before going places. If I didn't watch these youtube videos, I would never think to go to Norway or any of these northern places. If I ever do end up sailing my brain would automatically think about sailing in tropical places and I would have totally missed a place like this.

on a lighter note (although I will not apologize for my previous comment since it is such a HUGE issue), I want to let you know how great it is to see such a clean and ordered sailboat!! I have followed other sailing channels, none meet the organization level of the deck, stern, bow, etc. that we see in your episodes. Nice work!! Thanks for sharing these incredible places on earth!

Your photography/videography skills have become amazing! I like how you’re not just a sailing channel but more of an adventure travel channel. I wish you would have done a more formal introduction of your patrons on the glacier. They seem like interesting people. You not only have. The best channel on RUclips but you have some of the coolest patrons. Love you guys.

As always I live vicariously on your vlogs. I have visited Norway 4 times , twice in very late winter/early spring on skiing holidays in Lillehammer as a young man (22 - 25 year old) once some 17 years later, when I worked in Oman and a couple of years later me and my two sons drove and camp our way up to the Arctic circle in July/Aug .
Oddly Oman had its own very stark fiords!!! On the coast south of Muscat - much smaller, barren an with crumbling rock, no tumbling waterfalls -- but often with near permanent streams and vividly green vegetation surviving. Very rugged, and often with sweet water in much smaller streams in the upper regions.
Sorry, Sailing Uma but you log reminded me of spending many trips along that Omani coastline both by 4 metre dory, fishing trawler, and by military long wheel base land rover.
Your travels revive so many memories of 35 plus years ago.
Oddly enough I was on the island of Masirah when the ill fated US attempt to extract embassy staff from Iran took place. I was an army officer Comms engineer of SAF working on a project at the time and I watched the chaotic take off off several C130’s after sunset, without lights and there was a very very near miss (actually it wasn’t a miss) cos that aircraft didn’t take part in the mission.
And I watched some them return next morning in a very different state. But we were not permitted to be anywhere near. Very serious repercussions within Oman at the time when HM Sultan Qaboos was clearly denying any involvement in the operation. Got to stop
    Very different times

Hey, I was a retired , British army officer
and I worked / lived in Oman for ten very exciting years. Probably the best work I did in my entire life, but I did have a sound background of my life in the British army and I believe that the time and money spent on my training as a cadet and young officer was not wasted. And although I was recruited to Oman as private individual, I was very aware of my own learned loyalties to Uk MOD but also to the state of Oman ( as my employer).
I had immensely happy times in Oman. I know I worked hard there, but I also really enjoyed getting to know the Omanis - not always as easy as it could be.
I learned to speak abysmal Arabic and spent as much of my free time as I could travelling by vehicle - but more by boat meeting people - not always easy- it was very necessary to be aware of being a “nazaranee” and one bent over backwards to fit in but I had very very few difficulties out there. But
Oddly enough the major problems I had were associated with the very incidents around my being on Masirah island on that weekend and actually was a prime reason for me to leave Oman a couple of years later which I cannot and will not talk about. I was always loyal to HM Sultan Qaboos and had great respect for him but there were, inevitably in those times the minor ripples of discontent which, as an outsider, one had to be aware of .
Certainly the last 3 years in Oman I kept an open air ticket in a secure place , as a probable means of a very rapid departure.
I don’t know what others did but I suspect that many of my colleagues took similar precautions. If you have worked as an expat anywhere then I suspect that you were always taking very sensible precautions.
      Ah shut up!
      Get back to sailing!
Nearly deleted all this --but hey it w as life at the time

Times seamed simpler then, don’t know if that’s true or if it just feels like that, spending time in Norway has been a great eye opener, other ways of doing things, it’s been a real breath of fresh air, and finally having the time to travel without a job to get back to is great. Stay safe Trevor 😊

one last comment (sorry): I'm fairly certain that almost all other RUclips sailboat channels would have "motor-sailed" through those no-wind periods. I like your attitude of, "we will get there when we get there." I'm sure that the fact that you have an electric motor forces this attitude, but you went into electrification knowing this. Congratulations for showing us that it is doable, and, rewarding/enjoyable. Cheers!

    • @SailingUma
      @SailingUma  4 года назад +1

We chose to go electric knowing it's limitations, but also it's huge advantages. It didn't force us into the attitude, we already had it, that's why we chose a sailboat in the first plane.

Norway is a long country tho, but if you are south in Norway the temperature is good from Medio May till medio September. There are some livaboards during winter months, but then you need heating of course. Some moor up and just use electric heating and some like to enjoy some perfect winter sailing and a diesel heater is preferred, like a Reflex or one like webasto

The last time I went up a Norwegian fjord we were doing twenty three knots and had no trouble with fickle winds. Mind you we were in a Royal Navy frigate going to Bergen for a bit of light cross country skiing.
It was just on dawn and I don't think I have ever been so cold as I was on the bow.

Love your videos. They permit me to enjoy so many regions that I will never have the opportunity to visit. Keep up the good work. My experience on glaciers, take shorter steps.

Spectacular drone work. All of it. Curious, how deep (average) are the fjord waters? Let us know if you think of it next episode. Too bad you can’t fish in slack waters.

It is hard to calculate an average of the depths, but it is deep. The deepest part of Sognefjorden is 1308m (~4 300'). Norwegian Yellow Pages has a nautical chart in beta. This link should take you to Gaupne: pasjoen.gulesider.no/#map=13.17/61.3957/7.30467
You can browse from there - depths in meters.

started following you guys a few weeks into our first UK lockdown, but am all caught up now and seeing the places you guys have been and how far you have brought UMA work wise is just mind blowing. I am in the process of buying a Ketch 40 and then in 2023 set off round the world myself. Have you seen any Orcas yet?

Break out the oars! Another great video. Beautiful scenery. I'd love to be on a glacier, but not likely to happen now. I've been close, but never on one. Thanks you two! Happy Holidays!
