I rarely comment on videos. I must say that this is one of the coolest hacks. I have glacial LED lights strung across my room to give it a fantasy/space-ish atmosphere, along with 2 blacklights.
i used one speaker and a string of about 20 small incandescent christmas tree lights. I hooked the lights up to the left audio output plug and a speaker onto the right one. Then i changed the balance to ALMOST completely left (the lights) and blasted it to full volume. It worked, although it wasn't very light, you still get the idea. There weren't enough lights to put on the tree, so I put them on the stair rail instead. Thanks kipkay!
I found that it's not only blink with the sound but also can create the sound when it shine. Try it yourself. I've try it on my motobike light bulf. The sound it created is weird but it's fun, and warm if you let it touch your ear.
@JohnTheTankRutecki Receivers may or may not have the A/B depending on how it was made. A/B is not L/R(Left and Right) but it is 2 separate set of speakers containing the L&R channels which you can switch between. We are talking about a stereo receiver and not a tape deck.(for everyone else)
I just got a tool box set for sinterklaas ( national holiday ) and im going to try to make this! thanks alot for your vids its really fun to see them and to make m!
Agreed, You also have to have your stereo's volume up to a pretty high point for the lights to really start kicking in. But, I think making a Mic inputted Aurduino board with a 10v volt power supply would better suit peoples needs for a smaller light fixture using LED's. You just have to have the right software to implement the code for Mic = Certain voltage to a certain row of LED's.
Ive seen someone do this with their stereo but they used the little xmas lights so this is 100% real basically the signals from the stereo that drive the speakers the power the lights
light travels faster than sound therefore the electical energry converts in to the lights first then they refract the sound which will either deafin you or blind you depening on resistance of the wire
i did something similar to my PSP. i put LEDs in my L & R buttons and soldered them to the speakers..... now i have the coolest PSP amongst my friends!
Still,if lightbulbs with mains supply are needed, then you could combine the arduino and thyristors,so that arduino does all the flashing and the thyristors will obey.Though the idea with leds is good, they can be quite expensive, when you need high intensity ones.
This will also blow your stereo fuses i tried this a couple times in order to do this without harming your stereo youll need something that controls how much electricity goes from your stereo into the lights cause if the stereo is too loud the power reflects off the lights back into the fuses blowing them out.
lol he makes it sound so simple "all you have to do is.. then you use your handy.. but don't forget to.. *chuckles* and you'll be on your way" -- it sounds like something, that even if I get working today, it probably wouldn't work on Christmas day.
well its just if you have extra lights lying around that don't usually get used. though I could imagine once you hook that up if you had your sound system near a window you could place the lights up in the window.
@Henzzman Good to know that some people actually have knowledge of these things, I'm sorry if I offended you, I just start to get a bit angry when all these people start blaming him for a fuse blowing on there amp or they say there stereo isn't working anymore, It's there fault for doing it.
You could blow all those lights if you was to run enough voltage and current through them. It would be a little different being that would be alternating current coming from it too.
@xperimentalxperience Or you can run the lights in parallel. I would check the impedance rating of your amp and then measure the resistance before connecting. Otherwise you can burn up your expensive amp.
@hanrickjones, actually it all depends on your recievers voltage output (DC buss) a receiver with a 70v RMS output should easily light a 7 watt 110 volt bulb at higher volume. Each bulb would only take it's nominal 7 watts so a string of 10 would be only 70 watts. Any mid line receiver should do this with ease! Some people just need to be educated!
@SonySasuke That's funny. You tested the lights, right? You may be dealing with a voltage issue which can be solved with a step-up transformer or reducing the number of lights.
excellent idea for a cheap relay hack, but make sure to check the ohms on the lights of you can damage your amp, expecialy high powered ones, your amp will give a minimum ohms (usualy 4, sometiems 2) you can test the resistance (ohms) of the strand with a 15$ multimeter from homedepot, itll save you a 150$ amp :) --cheers
D1t1: But audio is an AC wave.. leds only allow current to pass one direction (good for DC, but on AC yous only get half the wave). Also, you have a thing called impedance you have to worry about.. this is a good way to burn out the amp in your stereo
you'd need extra wires, but it's the same concept-- take the wires connected from the light to the power source and connect them to the stereo(like the lights, using the stereo as the power source)
If MacGyver was real, and he and Kipkay teamed up--we'd have transforming vehicles, flying cars, and every imaginable futuristic device ever, along with a few others Mac made from a spoon handle, toothpaste, and a small crocodile.
tried this years ago but with LEDs. it works but you need a good enough amp. was able to do it on a 200w amp but higher is better. if your gonna use leds get some resistors and connnect them up otherwise you will blow the leds and/or kill the amp
KipKay! You're part of my inspiration for becoming an electrical engineer. Thanks man
Was your career successful?
@@user-yc1kh7qn7qi hope he is
nah ive allways loved kips way of showing the cool diy tech in a clear and easy to under-stand format

Looks like your cute cat is enjoying the festive lighting and music!!!
Wasn't talking about Kipkay, I love his videos.
Loved watching your videos as a kid
I done this way back in the day, i forgot where i got the idea to do it. Great stuff!
I found that it's not only blink with the sound but also can create the sound when it shine. Try it yourself. I've try it on my motobike light bulf. The sound it created is weird but it's fun, and warm if you let it touch your ear.
Holy crap, Kipkay you have the same stereo as i do, it's been working more than 5 years and still working here.
Tuxie looks so cute at the end
That cat is like " I made this" Lol that's awesome.
KipKay is creative and inventive and super smart!
my friend did this with the visor off his chevy blazer, so in addition to shaking the house the bass will light his room too

dude u r feaking amazing at making things but ur voice makes it tht much better
I was just jokin...of course, my favorite CD doesn't change with the different seasons. My favorite is always my favorite lol.
Oh man this is cool, Great Work KipKay.
That's amazing! Dude--if there was ever a person that could build a giant robot, it's you.
nice. these vids are very helpful, not to mention very practical and useful. i give you props amn, you deserve them.
Thats a great idea Kip , I'm gonna try this out! Thanks buddy!
OMG DUDE!! i knew how that worked and i knew to do that, (of corse, LOL) but to use CHRISTMAS LIGHTS? your complete and utter genius!
Another awesome video,Kipkay! Merry Christmas!!!(almost)
Ive seen someone do this with their stereo but they used the little xmas lights so this is 100% real basically the signals from the stereo that drive the speakers the power the lights
light travels faster than sound therefore the electical energry converts in to the lights first then they refract the sound which will either deafin you or blind you depening on resistance of the wire
that is awesome, now i know what i can do with all those extra christmas lights
I used just one lamp and it works !! Its cool but you have to turn volume really loud so the lamp starts to work !
wow I'm getting into djing and this video would actually come in handy. There are dj's that buy equipment that sync to the music like that.
I like how the cat was shocked when you turned it on :)
Add a Mosfet in between the lights and the stereo. You will get brighter lights and best of all it protects the stereo from damage.
lmao ur cat's blank stare just cracked me up
Guy: 'That's how you get party lights that DANCE to the music'
Cat: 'Hey wait... I've heard that song before...'
Did something similar when I was back in junior high. Have to be careful you don't pump too much juice, or good bye light bulbs.
Read the description, their powered by the stereo, and the stereo is powered by a wall outlet.
i did something similar to my PSP. i put LEDs in my L & R buttons and soldered them to the speakers..... now i have the coolest PSP amongst my friends!

wow this rules. You're the best video maker
lol, the cat as like 'wtf? what is that noise coming from??'
LMAO
@aaronjs4 That is because they are hooked up to the speaker output. When ever the speakers get electricity the light does too.
You sure do like blue! I like it to but with black. I love the James Bond laser weapon! Keep up the good work! Nay Great work!

I love it! Since i got the same stereo system, it should be very easy!
Agree with others, if you don't get the resistance about right, you are going to have a sizzled amp. A nice idea, if you are VERY careful...
lol he makes it sound so simple "all you have to do is.. then you use your handy.. but don't forget to.. *chuckles* and you'll be on your way" -- it sounds like something, that even if I get working today, it probably wouldn't work on Christmas day.

KipKay for president!!!

thats no suprise...kipkay is santa..... no wonder i get such badass gifts
@plasmashears AC vs DC only matters with motors and such, any regular lightbulb is perfectly happy to work to AC or DC
You should try putting some flammable gasses in the lightbulbs.
You turn them on, they go "BOOM!"
ohhhh the cat at the end peers in to my soul
@xperimentalxperience
Or you can run the lights in parallel. I would check the impedance rating of your amp and then measure the resistance before connecting. Otherwise you can burn up your expensive amp.
Shure it would. But you would need to add in an amplifier, since the ipod won't output enough power to lite more than one or two bulbs.

I loled so loud at the actor/actress cat posing for the camera :D!
my god... What do i need to do to be as awsome as you kipkay?!
dude your cat is awesome. i want one just like it
Haha, this is incredibly clever. Good job.
@SonySasuke

lol the cat was like: i feel like something is watching me... xD
man, its sooo nice! Awesome hack, and cat!
kipkay YOU ARE A GENIUS :D
you'd need extra wires, but it's the same concept-- take the wires connected from the light to the power source and connect them to the stereo(like the lights, using the stereo as the power source)
The cat's like "WTF Tur that sh*t off". :)!
Gotta love that cat, "you lookin at me"?
look at the cat at 0:54 he's like(OMG. is that x-mas music)
i know i went through 5 boxes before i figured it out
i got it working now...it looks great in the hospital!
lol, the cat totally got you that thumbs up :)
imagine dubstep with those and with more lights! that would be crazy
look at the cat at 1:00 he is like "turn that #### off"
i used to do that years ago was so funny untill my famliy needed the light for xmas haha but still was so funny to see nice vid as always
You can try reducing the number of lights or using a more powerful amplifier.
I bet Kipkay's home is filled with like fricking awesome stuff. I wouldn't blame anyone if they broke in his home...
kipkay u r awesome!!
now this is really cool, and your cat rules!
Pretty cool, maybe I could do this with my alarm clock and lamp.
When you played the music, Domino looked so terrified lol
You're amazing! I love your vids!!!
i have christmas lights that already have this in the programme, but nice to see it hacked
it works great! thanks for the how to!
thats kick ass.......im gonna go and do that right now
If MacGyver was real, and he and Kipkay teamed up--we'd have transforming vehicles, flying cars, and every imaginable futuristic device ever, along with a few others Mac made from a spoon handle, toothpaste, and a small crocodile.

It works because he has it all the way plugged in, not just hardly put the wires so they touch
Kipkay is a perfect santa XD
I love your cat! And your videos rule!
I love your cat Kip :)
lmfao @ the cat
its like "WTF??!?!!"
the kitty is in your housez stealin your lightz!!
Wow. I would have never thought to do that.
If the resistance from those lights is more than what that stereo can handle you can say bye to it!
I wouldn't try this on that new high end stereo you got. It's ok on something you were gonna replace
you should be in commercials your voice sounds perfect for them
