      I hate this realism=good mindset that the movie industry has
      One of the biggest examples is "love death and robots" which is a series where every episode has a different story and universe (one might be the preview of a "what if Hitler didn't die" app the other might be a bunch of archeologists running from Dracula, it's always something new) the first season was great, the art styles matched the tone and the mix of horror and comedy that it had was great, but there were a lot of episodes where they default to cgi, it wasn't as bad in the first season but the second had more of that than it should, everything was cgi with little exceptions which sucks because if it was like this from the start I wouldn't have watched past the first episode, the only episode I remember from season 2 is made with stop motion and it's great because the contrast between the cutesy and wholesome tone and setting with the horror made it actually surprising and interesting

    Wednesday being adopted would’ve made more sense in the original comics where Wednesday was like. Shy and meek and stuff. I think the movies made her lean into the more gothic aspects of the Adams and honestly it was great for her character. But between leaning into that and making her look even More like Morticia, I literally Can Not see Wednesday being adopted.
    Pugsley being adopted would make more sense? But then again while he doesn’t look like either of his parents he’s literally indestructible.

    To me, the 90s films (and the b&w series) was never about the family having family conflicts, it was more about the Family vs the rest of society. Trying to create conflict within the family just feels wrong. In my mind the Addams' love and support each other and all the rest of the world can do is deal with their strangeness. These animated films just don't capture that.

    • @tyrant-den884
      @tyrant-den884 3 года назад +267

      I would offer the slight modification: _society_ vs. the Addams. Because the Addams did not fight or struggle against society any more than they did with each other; "society" would try and fail to fight against them while they'd just respond with their unique brand of good natured pleasantness.

    • @lightworker221
      @lightworker221 3 года назад +80

      If they want conflict in the family, they could have referenced the TV show but it make it darker. For example, Morticia's sister Ophelia could cause a lot of conflict, since she is similar to Debbie (less man-killer). Or they could have done something with Lurch, like they did in the episode where Lurch is trying to impress his mother or the other episode where he tries to get a date to a town dance.

    • @rosequill7925
      @rosequill7925 3 года назад +37

      There are very few episodes of the black and white series where there was conflict in the family and they always felt kind of off and awkward and like the characters had enough communication skills to resolve them at the beginning but the writers needed a episode so they ignored that

    • @whade62000
      @whade62000 3 года назад +34

      True, but it's no like the shows didn't have plenty of internal conflict. There was an episode about Gomez and Morticia mistakenly believing that the other has fallen love with someone else and both deciding, on their own, to support what makes the other happy (before it gets cleared up). There was one about Morticia worrying if she spends enough time with the kids, inspiring her to volunteer for at the school (with predictable results). There was one about Pugsley trying to prank her sister back, before deciding that their established dynamic was fine.
      The point is, the family always responds to these problems in an exemplary way. That's why the Addamses could became role models for so many. The Addamses responding to family problems in a way that makes you love them more is very much a partof their appeal.
      What you CAN'T have with these characters is trying to run them like the Simpsons (or its copycat shows) and have the fact that everybody is an insensitive idiot drive the plot. You CAN have their backwards logic drive the plot. But you shouldn't ever change the fact that the Addamses are NICE, and go beyond duty to support each other more than your average family would.

    • @S0rar1a
      @S0rar1a 3 года назад +23

      Exactly. The Adams family were meant to subvert the more commonly found comedy family. Part of that was the fact that they actually cared for each other and supported each other, and communicated with each other. Which then pointed out how messed up it was that we didn't see anything wrong with those comedy families that were spiteful and toxic and downright awful to each other.

    If they really HAD to go for the "swapped at birth" plot (and it's not even good), why didn't they go for Pugsley? He doesn't look like anybody else in the family here and both movies really push the idea of him often being the victim/pushed around by the darker elements of the family to make him the butt of jokes. If anybody in the family would be at risk of not feeling like they belong, it would be him (at least in this series). Not to mention he's more into explosions and chemical warfare than everybody else, so him being the potential son of a scientist would at least cause an interesting conflict where he finds somebody with similar interests and is finally in his element more.
    It would still be generic as hell, but it would at least be more plausible than literal-ghoul-child-followed-around-by-a-storm-cloud-spitting image-of-her-mother Wednesday.

    Imagine the Addams family goes to Salem, and initially everyone thinks they’re just a normal family that’s excited to be there, and the Addams family thinks they’ve finally found a place where they fit right in. But soon it becomes apparent that the Addams family really is as dark and scary as modern Salem pretends to be. I can imagine there’s a businessman who doesn’t like that the family is accidentally scaring away the other tourists, but he can’t just kick them out because they’re technically tourists too, so he’s trying to find a way to scare them out and it keeps backfiring. Eventually, the businessman turns the townsfolk against the family, and it plays out almost like a modern witch trial. Maybe at the end, the businessman causes a big problem that the Addams family has to solve in order to save the town, and the people of Salem realize that the Addams family being scary doesn’t necessarily make them dangerous.

    I'm kinda sick of the entire "Wednesday is the mascot of the Addams family" trope. I get that all series have a character that pops out but lately all these Addams Family stories aren't 'Family' anymore. It's almost always a story surrounding Wednesday. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love her, but this makes the rest of the family move to the background with Morticia and Gomez having more importance because they are the parents. Also, I absolutely hate that the entire vibe of these two movies is "Grubhub gets their own 3D movie in an amusements park" I love that they choose to stick to the original comic style, but all other characters seem so out of place and everything looks like it's made of plastic and rubber. I wholeheartedly agree that stop-motion would fit the entire look of this way better than CGI. I'm not against CGI, but sometimes certain stories need different mediums to get their point across.

    You know the music is weirdly enough one of the most disappointing parts about this for me and one of the main reasons I didn't even bother to give these movies a chance. With everything else I can tell that it is distinctly not like the Addams family, but at least they're trying. There's some semblance of an effort there, even if it fails. The music choices though, was just the nail in the coffin for this being a loveless soon to be dated cash grab of a movie for me.
    There are so many modern artists out there who make music with dark and macabre themes that I'm sure if they had been offered would've been happy to write a song that's morbid while still being kid appropriate enough for a movie about the Addams family. But instead they decided to go with rap songs that neither fit the tone and theme of the film or appeal to the demographics it's aimed towards. The ball wasn't just dropped, it was thrown into a bottomless pit.

    To play Devil’s Advocate here, it does kinda make sense that Wednesday is adopted considering that the core concept of the Addams Family is that even though they love and revel in death, gloom and doom they are still genuinely nice and kind people and are arguably more loving and morally correct then most “normal” families as they are blissfully unaware of how the world around them reacts to their alternative lifestyle. Wednesday however, at least since the 90’s films has been portrayed as being the only member of the family who is a genuine psychopath that is fully aware of how people react to the Addams and goes out of her way to actually hurt or even kill people, meanwhile if the rest of the family were to do so, it would at least be on accident or because they don’t really understand how death effects other people as they themselves are essentially immortal, being able to shoot each other with arrows for fun or casually take baths in sulfuric acid with no ill effect.
    Wednesday meanwhile KNOWS that stuff kills normal people and she LOVES it because it can kill people.

So they work best when they try to do normal stuff like,l get a job, go to a dinner party, go to a school event, and road trips. Not when you through them in super dark situations, for example if the addams family hung out with a bunch of goths every movie/episode then they wouldnt be a weird, interesting family it would just be a group of goths.

    Honestly I’d like the story better if Wednesday was actually confirmed to be adopted. Let’s say that Cyrus did abandon her and Morticia and Gomez found her and took her in. At the science fair, the lawyer talks about the fact that Cyrus wants Wednesday back, leaving Wednesday confused. She always thought she was an Addams. She does the whole DNA test and asks her parents if it’s true that she was adopted, and they tell her the truth. Wednesday feels confused and wonders if she still has a place in the family and withdraws herself, leading to the family taking a road trip to try and cheer her up. Along the way Wendsday keeps accidentally meeting with Cyrus, and he puts the thought in her head that she is better off with him then the Addams, and that the Addams don’t love her because they’re not her “real family”. Wednesday isn’t convinced at first, but after mishearing a conversation where Gomez and Mortica are worried if her bio parents will take her back and misinterprets it as they’d willingly give her back. Wednesday leaves with Cyrus, and he reveals that he’s not actually her biological father- he simply came up with the story that he was after finding about Wednesday being adopted so he could get her science project and use it to take over the world (or something like that). The Addams show up to save Wednesday and they defeat Cyrus. Wednesday leaves with the Addams, knowing that although they aren’t her biological family, that’s okay, because she knows that the Addams are her true family.

It would work if they just went to dark uncommon places , the siblings keep trying to kill each other for fun cuz they don't die , set a fun place on fire for fun , go to an asylum admiring the place, digging people out of their graves or something like that rather than the common places for a vacation and just doing normal things .

    My whole thing with the road trip plot is that the road trip filtered through the Addams should be fun, but it isn't in the same way the rest of the film and the first one isn't. Hell, the music isn't even Addams-esque!

    Though I didn’t watch the movies (And I never will), I keep thinking watching this:
    Wouldn’t it make more sense for Pugsly or the son to be the one whose possibly adopted? I mean think about it.
    -It makes more sense since he doesn’t resemble that many people in his family.
    -The movie could add Wednesday wondering if she could be more caring about her brother
    -Pugsly would have to decide between a normal family to be more appealing to girls, or the way he is now.
    But that’s just my thoughts.

    Just walked out of the theater for this. I love the Addams family. I have the original comics, the republished comics in a book compilation. The movies just barely disappointed me. Mostly cuz, some of the jokes land. But the plots are so silly and some are cringe. Music is okay. Some of their characteristics are true to the comics but some are self inserted. But do I really see these movies being beloved? No.
    I feel like the most out of character is Morticia and her over all judgey of “normal” people. She did that once and it was in the 90’s movie. And they make Gomez too pushy with his love.

    The best part of the Addams family is how much they absolutely love each other. The fact that they constantly try to kill each other and hurt each other offset by how close they are is a huge part of their unique charm.
    The fact that both movies focus on the problems with the family and how much they don’t understand each other and division in the family dynamic leaves a rotten taste in my mouth.
    That not how you Addams family.

    7:02 funny thing is that a family road trip with the adams CAN and SHOULD work if there is a family centric plot, like in both raul julias films. First film was about fester coming back and regaining his memory of the family, the second, again about fester, but this time abut him finding love and leaving the family. usually especially in the old tv series (ive only ever seen the two) most plots revolved around the family and them dealing with every day things, so imagine the adams have to move and have to find a new gothic looking place cuz theyre bored of their original home and want to change it up, doesnt sound to out of the norm for an adams adventure and could lead to some hillarious and powerful scenes.

    I was just about to comment Mitchells VS The Machines, but you summed up what I wanted to say about it :P
    It does feel weird that now, one of the things I’ll remember 2021 for is having a really good movie featuring a road trip, and a terrible movie featuring a road trip!
    I did watch the first Addams family movie, twice (once with boyfriend, once with close friend) and I really liked the visuals for the family and home, but there’s nothing else to write home about, especially the message. Of all the franchises, did we need a “no family is normal” moral for this? Glad I won’t be missing out on anything for the sequel.
    I’ll definitely watch the live action ones again, I did when I was really young so I vaguely remember them.

    Conflict within the family feels so wrong. The entire point is that even tho they're strange, they're never strange to eachother, at least not in the way they'er strange to everyone else. They get each other, this family conflict thing they have doesn't work with the Adams family because they love and understand each other too well

    There was an episode of the Golden Girls, an episodic TV series with maybe half this films budget, that did the whole “Daughter might not actually be related to her mother, but they’re still family despite that,” plot too. And it did it 100 times better than this film.
