*Want to see a glimpse of how I set up this beginner planted tank? Here is the first video where it was featured: **ruclips.net/video/_GhoB-fXIP0/видео.html*
You should put a nerite snail in there, they don't breed unless in brackish water. I have one in my tank that takes care of eating all the algae off my plants but not harming them.
Thank you! Your videos are so clear and informative. I love that you share your knowledge, and also the journey. I appreciate the extra graphics and edits too. Thank you - here’s to a fishy 2021.
Thank you so much! Showing my failures definitely invites criticism, but I love learning from them and sharing the lessons with others. Can't wait to make a video on how I finally balanced this tank.
Love the fact that the progress is visible. Plus the conflict of one plant versus another for a specific nutrient is something you don’t hear too often. Awesome setup Irene. Merry Christmas & happy new year to you and your family!🙏🏾❤️✊🏾💪🏾
Thank you so much! I was so shocked that I had nearly 0 ppm potassium when I bought a potassium test kit. No wonder my plants were failing. I'll definitely make a video next year on how I balanced this tank. Happy Christmas and New Year to you and your loved ones as well!
For sure! I've always been frustrated that everyone else seems to grow plants so easily. Turns out my tap water is kinda messed up, so I'm working on ways to fix it. :)
It’s just so easy to watch you. I’ve been on an aquarium video rampage, and most of the popular RUclipsrs I watch at 1.5-1.7 speed; however, I never do this with your channel. So informative, entertaining, and sweet. Thank you for your hard work. And keep it up!
Love following along. So glad you show the successes and challenges. My 10 gallon planted tank has had a bacterial bloom for almost 2 months. Water parameters are great, plants are okay, and fish are happy, when I can see them. 😃
Indian Almond Leaves are perfect for medicinal purposes especially with Fin Rot. I’ve used them for many years and its a lot better for the fishes compared to using chemicals and it also makes their colors brighter and your Betta will produce A LOT of bubbles!
This video was so helpful! How many fish total do you have in your tank? I’m looking into redoing my tank with lots of easy live plants, haven’t had the best of luck with some of my aquarium plants so I’m looking into some new easier plants. You tanks are always so beautiful so I’ll be using it for inspiration.
I had the same problem with my platys a few years ago, fin rot the first thing I used was APIs Melafix and it worked! it’s definitely saved me more then once. It’s used for treating bacterial infections like fin rot, body wounds, eye cloud, pop eye, and mouth fungus. It smells strongly of tee tree oil but doesn’t hurt the fish it took a little more than a week giving 10ml once a day.
This was great information for a super beginner like me, who wants to keep a planted aquarium one day, but rises to the challenge of “these plants are impossible to kill.” 😅 What I love about your videos is how you share things that didn’t work for you as well as your success, making them all the more useful and educational!
I'm so sorry to hear your betta has finrot. My betta, Chico, has finally recovered. I had to do 3 treatments with Maracyn as dosed on the box with a week in between for recovery. I also used ICH X with it. I have since squired 2 more rescue bettas and used the same treatment. All three are happy and healthy. I did feed my guys since it was long term treatment. Extra and hikari betta pellets mostly. I have pretty hard water and I don't know if that makes a difference. I will keep praying for your buddy. Happy new year!
You should start a 10 gallon planted shrimp tank series we’re each day you take photos or videos and clip them to together and talk about what happened and you upload every week and it shows what happened that week and the problems or good things that happened just a idea hope you like it or use it
Just subscribed!! I’ve just watched a bunch of your videos and I love them! In your next video, can you make a betta fish feeding vid? I’m trying to feed my betta a better diet including live feed.
Love you Irene... I've enjoyed following your journey! You always bring so much great knowledge, positivity and inspiration!! I hope you had a very merry Christmas and sending good vibes, love and support for the 2021 year!!!♥️🌿🐟🌿💚
Hey, I was having the same problem with holes showing up! I'm glad I watched this video, I just wish I'd watched it sooner. I'll start adding in some extra doses!
Hi Irene I really like your videos on here and on aquarium co op. You got a new subscriber👍. I recently got back to the aquarium hobby- my last tank was when I was a teenager. I've introduced this hobby to my wife and she loves it. Keep up the great videos!
@@swivvr7089 panda corydoras tolerate temps of 68-77 degrees, preferably 70-72 degrees, which is pretty chilly for a betta since they would be more comfortable in 75-80 degrees. dwarf corydoras or otocinclus catfish would be a better option since they generally have the same water parameters as bettas.
@@GirlTalksFish I went out and bought almost all your plants that you used for your Shy Guys tank. The fish that I'm leaning too are 6 cherry Barbs, (from your red fish video), 4 Khuli Loaches and 5 cory doras, in the time span of 1 month. Im cycling my tank now though.
@@GirlTalksFish Yes, I used an active substrate that doesn't buffer ph, so I got surprised with 5 ppm of ammonia! Super excited, Your the best and fish tuber! Im 12 and you have made the hobby so special!
Yes, that's definitely the plan! The tank is almost balanced IMO, but to really test it, I added some new stem plants to see how they do. If they survive and thrive, I'll consider the tank balanced and do a video on how I figured it out. :)
1:56 "Strangers in the night, exchanging glances..." I'm sorry, but did no one else notice this beautifully romantic encounter? All they need is a tiny table, a candle and a plate of blood worm spaghetti. I wonder what they're chatting about here?
Plant melt could be plants were grown out of water at the seller or farm. The plant should grow new leaves that are meant for water. Liquid fertilizer really help. If you add some solid fertilizer beneath the substrate, the plants will root themselves more often. Aqua soil is really good for rooting plants.
NOOOOO I love your videos I’ll miss during your off time. PS, I just got a new betta fish and I posted a video on my RUclips. Can you tell me what you think I should name him? Next Monday he finishes his quarantine. I know you don’t like koi bettas but I thought it was cool that he was found at a Petco. Have a great rest of your year!!!
Love your content! Sorry about Sonic. I did go through the fin rot with my Veiltail, did the salt, and erythromycin it didnt work. So I tried Sechems Kanaplex that knocked it out. Good luck!
3:35 i didnt know the name of it but that looks exactly like a plant i got a while i ago that just exploded in my tank. i used to prune it and then put a bunch f pieces back in the soil and it would just keep growing and growing. ive given a few pieces to a relative who their doing great with and i still have it going months and months later, wich is quite the achievement for me. I also had an aquarium lilly that got huge and had a bunch of pups break off but it dies when the bulb started rotting... il admit its still in the tank cuz i dont want to let it go, but hey, the shrimp like it ;)
My son's Betta had fin rot from Tetras nipping at his tail all the time. My son went away to work for a few days, and it was while I was feeding his fish that I discovered Shadow had no tail left. I bought a new tank and set it up and put as much bio media as I could into the tank to help stave off the ammonia spike but had to get that little guy into a safer environment where I could try to save him. His tail was gone right to the start of his body in the "v", but, sadly, I had no luck saving him. First I went to salt and treated him in that for two weeks. It seemed to have worked, so I started changing the salt water out, and it looked like his fins were growing back. What a dummy I am, I had no idea what was going on, but when I realized those weren't fins growing back, that was flesh falling from his body I switched to Maracyn 2 and dosed the tank. But even after that the same stuff was appearing, and his body had decayed to the bottom tip of his top fin. I was sickened. Rather than let him suffer any longer, I finally put him to sleep with a drop of clove oil in a container. I buried him in a lined box. It still hurts me to tell this. He was so beautiful. Irene, I think you can relate to this.
I’m currently using seachem paraguard on my betta, Ozzy, for a very resistant finrot that he developed. I was trying everything else too, but when I finally tried paraguard it seemed to really knock that finrot out and fast. You should give it a try for Sonic. :)
Im really surprised you couldnt keep your Amazon Swords alive. My Amazon Sword has been growing so large it now have split in two, without me doing anything else that trimming. (This is without Co2 and fertilizer btw)
What substrate and light did you use? My amazon sword looks absolutely miserable in my 15g dirted tank. It's ols leaves are getting yellow around the edges, the new growth are also yellowing and a bit transparent and they look a bit twisted •́ ‿ ,•̀ Any tips to make it grow lusher?
I love your RUclips channel. You helped me set up my first betta tank (whooo!) I have a couple questions. 1. What dechlorinator do you use? 2. Is it okay to put dechlorinator in the tank while the fish is still there during partial water changes? I noticed you didn’t take your betta out in your “how to clean a betta tank” video.
Glad to have helped! I use Fritz Complete water conditioner because my company Aquarium Co-Op sells it with a pump head, which is super convenient. Yup, I just take out the old tank water, squirt in some dechlorinator directly into the tank, and then add tap water into the tank. :)
I've a Betta in a hospital (quarantine) tank who's fins have receded. Doesn't look like canonical fin rot in a Betta, some of her tail has just shrunk. It's been months of feeding broad spectrum antibiotics (different ones, e.g. Ampicillin, Kanamycin, etc) so I am hitting her with Metroplex, Bendazole, and Maracyn 2 in medicated food for another two weeks. If I don't see any improvement, she's going back in her tank and I'll just have to accept she looks slightly ragged. Bettas can be challenging because of genetics and age, it might be she is a little older and comes from poorer stock. Other than her looks she's an aggressive feeder who hasn't lost any of her personality,
I bet if you capped that tank with sand as is and stopped using fertilizer itll blow up quick with growth. Ferts not needed if youre doing a decent water change schedule
How do you plant with tweezers and not break off the stem? Every time I try to use tweezers (angled end and straight end) my plant just breaks so im left with nubs of stem that I have to wait to grow out so I can plant. Very frustrating!
How are you oxygenating this tank? Or do you? I've been keeping Corycats for years and just upgraded from a 5 gal tank to this same 20h gal and i have lost 3 peppered corys to what I can only assume is suffocation in the last 2 days. All of my other fish are fine (5velvet mollies, 5neon tetra, and a betta) and my water tests fine so I am at a loss for what is happening.
Hi Girl Talks Fish I was wondering if I could ask you a question? How big is To Big for a Betta Tank? Idk if this is wrong info because I'm just a beginner but everyone always tells me that 10Gal is the biggest you should go for a Betta because otherwise it gets stressed out. Bettas in the wild are in rice patties so not a lot of water, If to much space they will get sick more often they always told me. I was planning on having a 20Gal for my future Betta but now idk what size of a tank I should get, could you plz let me know what you think? What is the max tank space a Betta should get? Thank you Girl Talks Fish, stay safe and take care :) Love your videos!
I coppied bentley's pro mode settings and never saw the vid of his daylight settings would you happen to have the link to that vid to get his daylight settings?
I have 3 dGH, 8.0 pH, and 78-80°F. Now that my betta fish isn't living in this tank anymore, I can probably lower the temperature back down to 74-78°F.
Must a planted tank have 2" of substrate to cycle? Will water column cycle with only floating and attached plants and just a token ⅓" layer of sand or gravel? Total weight is my concern
My god, I think this is the first time I've heard you not say "A Gamer's Wife" for the intro RUclips only recommends old content, apparently. Constantly showing me short clips from 10+ years ago.
You know, now that I have the algae under control and the tank is more balanced, I can probably cautiously increase it in the next few weeks and see how the tank does. Thanks for the suggestion! I appreciate the positive feedback. :)
I currently don't plan on purposely breeding the platies, so the fry mostly get eaten by the adult platies. However, if I ever decide to add a bunch of floating plants or moss, they'll have a much higher survival rate. :)
I'm sure you used Easy Green.... How do you know if you need more nutrients? Especially with basic plants? I'm not succeeding... Even using Aquarium Co-op plants...
Yes, I had that problem too with beginner plants (hence the Back-to-Basics tank). I ended up buying a ton of water test kits to test for plant nutrients and figured out I had plenty of nitrates but not enough potassium and phosphorus. I'll definitely make a video on how I balanced my tank in 2021.
I need urgent advice regarding my fish? as my fishes are start dying everyday dying one or two...my water parameters are fine.. temp are fine..i dont know what is happening even before fish die there is no symptom of stress or diseases. Please help
Depends on your experience level, but for most beginners, I usually recommend 5 gallons and up. I like getting a regular tank with no "hidden filter compartment" because sometimes I run into flow issues.
Irene, your plants will grow much better if you cap your substrate with at least two inches of sand and your fish will be healthier, also feed sparingly and change water as needed.
Thank you for your informative videos but I think in 2021 you should try some CO2. You can do a DIY CO2. Does not have to be big pressurized system. Simple DIY. It really makes a difference. I mean even a little CO2, you will not believe how the plants really respond.
I’m so confused I take care of my fish right but you are on a whole other level of care yet I rarely get a disease and can grow out my plants perfectly maybe it’s the difference I tap water or something idk
I think it’s ironic that you taught me about the importance of root tabs with Amazon swords but yours died lol I surrounded mine with tabs and it just keeps shooting up more and more
Haha, glad it helped. It was more the dwarf chain loaches bumping into the base of the sword and the algae growth that caused it to fail in that tank. Next time I'll put a ring of lava rocks around the base from the start.
I got them from various fish stores in Colorado, like About Fish, Aqua Imports, Exotic Aquatics, and Neptune's Tropical Fish. I believe Aqua Imports ships fish, but I've never ordered online from them.
you probably forgot to put your tank through the nitrogen cycle. there are a lot of videos about how to do it and it takes 1-2 months to fully cycle your tank, so don't buy any more fish yet. good luck!

Hi, What is your water hardness, pH and temperature? Thanks for the vids!
I have 3 dGH, 8.0 pH, and 78-80°F. Now that my betta fish isn't living in this tank anymore, I can probably lower the temperature back down to 74-78°F.
IRENE! Merry Christmas!
And a happy New Year to you!
Must a planted tank have 2" of substrate to cycle? Will water column cycle with only floating and attached plants and just a token ⅓" layer of sand or gravel? Total weight is my concern
My god, I think this is the first time I've heard you not say "A Gamer's Wife" for the intro
RUclips only recommends old content, apparently. Constantly showing me short clips from 10+ years ago.
Props for pronouncing both of the I's in wentii, it frustrates me the people call Julii's Julie's.
And then you mispronounced Otocinclus
Lol, can't win them all.
A couple doses of mela fix is all I've ever needed for fin rot
I’ve heard that it’s not good to use that on bettas because it could damage their labyrinth organ.
Can a Thai micro crab live with cherry shrimp I really cant see them bothering each other in a 15 gallon planted
Nice video. In my opinion your lighting at 30% intensity is too low and should be higher in a stable tank. Otherwise great work and nice planting.
You know, now that I have the algae under control and the tank is more balanced, I can probably cautiously increase it in the next few weeks and see how the tank does. Thanks for the suggestion! I appreciate the positive feedback. :)
Do you buy any of your fish online and if so which website
Where did you get the dwarf aquarium lily?
From my company Aquarium Co-Op. Great plant; definitely one of my favorites. :) www.aquariumcoop.com/products/dwarf-aquarium-lily-bulb-only
My platy fishes had so many babies that we outgrew our tank. Do you plan to let the frys stay in this tank or move them over?
I currently don't plan on purposely breeding the platies, so the fry mostly get eaten by the adult platies. However, if I ever decide to add a bunch of floating plants or moss, they'll have a much higher survival rate. :)
@@GirlTalksFish Thank you for replying.
What was cause of fin rotting I got some situation planted tank had a algea bloom cleared it up but now one my guppies with big tail is rottimg
How often do you change your water?
I feel for you about din rot. My betta has it and i gave him sevrale treatmendt and he eventulally died... :(
oh no, i'm so sorry to hear that! i hope your betta is in a better place :)
:)
Any tips for java fern?
I need urgent advice regarding my fish?
as my fishes are start dying everyday dying one or two...my water parameters are fine.. temp are fine..i dont know what is happening even before fish die there is no symptom of stress or diseases.
Please help
Are you still going to do more fish by color videos?
Yup, for sure! I just got to get more b-roll footage of orange fish before I can make the video.
What type and size tank do you recommend for a single betta?
Depends on your experience level, but for most beginners, I usually recommend 5 gallons and up. I like getting a regular tank with no "hidden filter compartment" because sometimes I run into flow issues.
Nice video girl 👍😍
Irene, your plants will grow much better if you cap your substrate with at least two inches of sand and your fish will be healthier, also feed sparingly and change water as needed.
Thank you for your informative videos but I think in 2021 you should try some CO2. You can do a DIY CO2. Does not have to be big pressurized system. Simple DIY. It really makes a difference. I mean even a little CO2, you will not believe how the plants really respond.
I've totally been looking into CO2 systems. 👀 But I'm so close to balancing this tank as a low tech setup, so maybe afterwards.
@@GirlTalksFish Give it a shot when you can. Best wishes to you and yours for 2021, I hope Sonic gets better and keep up the good work!
The same happened to my betta, he had velvet and I treated it for months and nothing happened
Epic
4:49 are those amano shrimp eggs??
i think so! don't know whether they're fertile or not though.
Yup they are! Unfortunately, the young need salt/brackish water to survive.
How do you dose just potassium?
I just got some Flourish Potassium and put a pump head on it. 👍
What substrate do you use?
Doh! Can't believe I forgot to mention it, but I use CaribSea Eco-Complete and Aquarium Co-Op Easy Root Tabs.
@@GirlTalksFish can i use regular black sand? Or any alternative substrate?
I’m so confused I take care of my fish right but you are on a whole other level of care yet I rarely get a disease and can grow out my plants perfectly maybe it’s the difference I tap water or something idk
maybe it's just good luck lol
I think it’s ironic that you taught me about the importance of root tabs with Amazon swords but yours died lol I surrounded mine with tabs and it just keeps shooting up more and more
Haha, glad it helped. It was more the dwarf chain loaches bumping into the base of the sword and the algae growth that caused it to fail in that tank. Next time I'll put a ring of lava rocks around the base from the start.
Inject co2 and do weekly 50% wc u will grow90% of ur plants
25th like from India
does anyone know where she bought her fish?
I got them from various fish stores in Colorado, like About Fish, Aqua Imports, Exotic Aquatics, and Neptune's Tropical Fish. I believe Aqua Imports ships fish, but I've never ordered online from them.
Why is not everyone addressing the sick betta?
Because they know he was old, not sick, and has since passed away. :(
👍💓👍
Lets talk about the fact that the moved the substrater and killed the betta by exposing ammonia🙅♂️
Try Aquasoil next time, nothing grows plants better than aquasoil! It is night and day different.
Ooo maybe for the next time I rescape this tank...
Pleasseeeee I need to know why my fish keep dying every single dayyyyy
try changing the water with rain water
Is your tank cycled
you probably forgot to put your tank through the nitrogen cycle. there are a lot of videos about how to do it and it takes 1-2 months to fully cycle your tank, so don't buy any more fish yet. good luck!
I have a crush on you !
Very happy 😍💋 💝💖♥️❤️
