My favourite tank is a planted nano aquarium with a few chilli rasboras. Has been going for 9 months and is the lowest maintenance tank. No filter, no ferts but have aquasoil, no co2, budget LED light from ebay. That's pretty much it. I did pick easy plants though - dwarf hair grass, anubias, ludwgia, s repens, some java moss and red root floaters.

I also have rimless tanks, but you can fairly simply make a lid yourself. I recommend using either glass (although that will be not really flexible and you have to be 100% sure about the position of the holes and a door will be a bit of a pain or polycarbonate plastic, which is much more flexible and unlike acrylic, which is better looking, poly carbon will not bend. Acrylic plates on top of aquariums will bend severely up to the point that it's really ugly. Use polycarbon if you don't want to use glass. Edit: make sure you clean the lid on a rimless tank often for the lid will be Disneyworld for algae if you don't.

Aquarium LED buying guide please and how to balance them for plant vs algue ;-). I'm currently looking at Aquatlantis Volga so would be interested to learn about their standard lighting ... On plants, low tech etc. I think/hope I found a balance in both of my (small) tanks. On the advice for plants though even easy plants do not make it in my tanks so what I've done is buy single plant and experiment to see which ones will make it and adapt accordingly and see which ones make it before propragating them. Interestingly I noticed that the same plant grows differently depending on what tank I put it in. BTW my tanks are not aqua scape but regular fish tanks so I'm not that critical about which plants I use.

Hey man, I've been going through your videos because you frankly have absolutely gorgeous aquascapes.
In your substrate section you talk about the need for substrate that allows for the substrate to be oxygenated. I've heard some conflicting things on this and wanted to ask you for more details. If you've already got a video on this please point me towards it. But basically, many aquarists insist that using sand to cap the substrate allows it to create an anaerobic environment, and the roots of the plants provide enough oxygen to the bacteria, etc. I'd love to hear your thoughts because I'm in the process right now of deciding how to alter my 35 gallon aquarium's substrate to make it more plant friendly (currently have gravel, which is inert and useless for plants).
    Thanks!

Unfortunately, in the U.S. the Aquascaping scene isn’t as popular as it is in Europe and Japan. As such, it takes a little more effort to explain it to the average American who didn’t even realize it was a thing. I created a presentation for my co-workers as a fun way of introducing the hobby to people. I also made a list as a way of explaining it to them. Yours focusing on what “items” you need while mine focuses on what you need to “know and understand” (so not exactly the same thing). Either way, I thought I’d share if anyone was interested. Here it is:
    1: The Space (Enclosure/Aquarium)
    2: The Water (Parameters)
    3: The Filtration
    4: The Light
    5: The Aeration (O2 and C02)
    6: The Substrate
    7: The Hardscape
    8: The Softscape (Plants)
    9: The Animals
10: The Nutrition (Ferts and Fish Food)
    11: The Maintenance
    12: The Patience

    • @MJAquascaping

    • @MatthewMarquit
      @MatthewMarquit 2 года назад

@@MJAquascaping Yeah. I actually did the presentation in front of the whole company (about 100 people). People were pretty excited about it afterwards. To be fair, I spend 60 hours making the presentation with all the research, art, and animations I added to it. Not sure if that was a great return on time investment since the presentation was only 15 minutes, but it's my hobby so, it was fun to do. Likewise, I appreciate the insane hours you put into creating these videos and coming up with all your interesting tests. You are a hard worker and extremely talented. Keep it up, man!

To be fair, the Victorians kept aquariums with only a glass box of water and sun light.
The box is the only true requirement. However, most people alive today would be disappointed with the very narrow number of fish and plants which could actually grow in that bare bones set up.
In contrast, the more diverse and sensitive the biological requirements of the organisms you're keeping, and the more narrow their range of acceptable parameters: the more technology is required. A good example of this is how it was impossible to keep Acropora alive in aquariums until the late 1980's-early 90's, because we literally did not have the lighting and flow capability to meet their biological demands. Today, people keep wall-to-wall Acropora tanks, though the typical price of that system is staggering due to the corals requirement of lighting, flow and automation. Today's planted tanks fall somewhere in the middle between the SPS reef, and a Victorian aquariums.
Here, you created a good list of the foundational items. A "low tech" planted tank is simply one that does not try to optimize and push peak photosynthetic growth, and they really are quite simple once you strip away all the extra bells and whistles.
You did a good job of laying out the basic materials and alleviating or removing areas where a brand-new hobbyist could feel overwhelmed or become confused.
