I attempted this method 2 months ago using java moss on lava rock and setup C02 injection. I used a scoop of greek yogurt in my "moss slushy" and lots of mold formed very fast within a week. I ended up flooding my tank after 3 weeks because of it and was worried this method failed but to my delight moss is just now starting to cover the entire rock and get thick! SUPER excited with how beautiful it's starting to look. I've learned so much from MJ and his aquascaping colleagues. So grateful for you and your team's videos. They are PHENOMENAL!!!!
You have the patience of a saint! I think the method, or rather the growth results is amazing!!
Man your content is always amazing and I learn something new every time.
You mentioned having mold issues, im wondering if you tried using springtails to fight it a bit?
Hey Chris! Nice to see you here! Love your channel man!
No unfortunately when I was drystarting with yogurt I didn't even know about springtails.. That would have been a perfect solution probably!
Chris rating please hehe
Where would you leave the springtails when you're done with the dry start and start flooding the tank? :o
@@AmpsNL they float, and some live on water. So there will be no priblem with them
This is absoutely brilliant! Thank you for sharing this with me, this was just what I needed to get the look I want. You are an absolute ARTIST at what you do. I enjoy watching you and your work so much.
Thank you so much for this demonstration! The moss method you used on your “hills” tank obviously works, and the result is absolutely beautiful. I would never have come up with it myself, but I’m certainly going to try to replicate it.
I have never seen such beautifully covered rocks. Definitely would try your dry-start method.
Your content is top notch...it’s so relaxing to listen and see those beautiful scapes...
You’re so under subscribed...Keep up the good work...you rock 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you very much!
Seen this method before using water and aqua soil. This has just opened up a whole new world for me. 😊
Will definitely give this a go in the future. Your channel offers so much info & tips, Thanks!👍
Amazing technique, will definitely try it out.
The new scape looks very promising.
Mr MJ is taking the hobby to the next level. I will be using your method for my next tank.
Great idea with the blender and coffee grinder. I’m learning new things from your vids. Thanks !
Wow, seems like a brilliant idea. I am not an experienced aquascaper, but I have been researching. Thank you.
Interesting! Cool way to start a moss scape! I learn something new everyday.
THIS is the videos ive been looking for, thank for sharing your techniques! you have beautiful tanks, keep making videos!!
I’m going to try this method right away. You’ve given me a few ideas, thanks.
This is next level. Looking forward to going down a rabbit hole of your projects
Beautiful job on all tanks. You are a very talented artist.
I’m definitely going to try this method…so cool!!!
Like wow great technique and this is one of the most attractive aquascapers I've seen.
Thank you for sharing your method. I am one of the people who requested your tutorial video on the moss work. So really appreciate your sharing this.
You are so welcome!
You can also use finely sieved / or ground peat moss, mixed in with the aquarium moss. You use it instead of aqua soil or yoghurt etc. It looks like soil, and it’s naturally acidic so it’s very good for preventing microbes and mould etc. It’s often used for getting plant seeds to sprout. Just make sure you use peat moss not coco peat, they’re different things.
I’ve seen Jurijs Jutjajevs use springtails to eat mould too.
Thanks for this tip! I'm about start this project and have some fluval peat filter substrate laying around.
@@gixxer1111 no worries, I’m not familiar with Fluval peat so I’m not sure if it differs to regular peat moss / peat soil, but I wish you every success.
Just wow...
I didn't know this method,
I will try this on my next aquarium
Thanks sir 👍
Wow... I never thought of this! I have moss on the way and found your video right on time. I'll definitely give this a shot.
Your video BLEW MY MIND! Oh my god I love this method!

Thank you for sharing this method! I'll give it a try on my future project.
Yes
That's for the yogurt 🤣 I was thinking about that and all your videos, they are grate. I'm starting the dry method in 2 weeks (time to find in nature yellow rocks ) In a cube 40cm I will use Jawa moss going whit I know for first time :) If I have mold what I need to do ? Sorry for the long post :/
no, because i'll try a montecarlo carpet, and my hardscape isn't suitable for moss
i am working on an aquascape right now and already planned on using it
I would love to give this a go, it obviously works, it brilliant, yeh! you need patience, but the rewards look awesome, we'll done mate, great tip, can't wait for it to grow out. 👏👌👍
Let me know when you do give it a go!
@@MJAquascaping I will mark, I'm soon to setup a 200l and will be using your dark method, and then plant afterwards 💚
@@jascarty3503 hi its been a year, can you give an update
I tried this with Christmas moss, following your instructions exactly. Maintained a consistent 78 degrees Fahrenheit in the tank, used beneficial bacteria in the water i misted it with two to three times a day, kept it covered, but now 4 weeks in the only thing that has happened is that I wasted a large clump of moss and the wood I used is black due to the aqua soil that was mixed in. Has anyone else tried this with any success or has anyone done it with java Christmas moss? I don't know if I'm unlucky or if this just doesn't work as advertised.
Fantastic method! I’m going to give it a go today, thank you 👍🏻
Brilliant idea bro, That's gonna be my next aquascaping project.
Really ingenious method!, I am gonna try this out at once!!!
Very cool method! I've never seen that done but I really like that you didn't use super glue and string. The end results look great doing it that way, don't know if I have the patience but we'll see because I'm definitely gonna give it a try! Thanks bro! I really enjoy your videos MJ!
Glad you liked it!
Iv'e used this method before, works really well indeed
Artist!! Yes I would try the dry start! Saving up for new Scape!
Definitely the best method. Thanks sir
I just started keeping fish I want this for my tank looks amazing definitely trying this
Sounds like a great idea! I want to try it with Christmas moss.
will def try this in my next scape thank u for the tip
You’re welcome 😊
Amazing, looks cool. nice method. Although a little time taking, but end result is excellent.
I will def give this a try
Excellent tutorial! I'm absolutely going to give this method a try next time. Thank you also for pleasantly and humbly sharing your skills. I get so tired of people yelling "What's up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" at the camera and then trying to listen to what they're saying as junky music blasts in the background. I can't wait to dig into more of your videos.
I will definitely try this in my new nano project. Looks like a good idea for shrimp tank.
I definitely would do this. Thanks for doing this vid.
What a fantastic idea💡
omg this is amazing deffo gonna try this
Nice! I'll have to try a moss smoothie one day 😃
Great channel 👍
Awesome stuff! Thanks for sharing!
Cool, and from a scientific view it's logical.Well done.If I have to create another tank I will definitely try it Genius to put the moss into a blender
best moss method for this kind of hardscape
Really liking this. Looking forward to the outcome. 👊🏻
This is brilliant!!
Very nice. Very good ideas. Thank you
I am doing this right now, 3 days in at the moment following your method! I soaked my scape for about 3 days and then grinded up the moss and aqua soil. I’m using the Tropica soil with Java moss as I figured that would be an easier moss to try for my first time. I painted it all over where I would like it to grow, mainly on the rocks and particular places of wood. I also have put small, thin pieces of Java moss on the smaller wood sticks, not grinded and not glued or tied down and gave them a light coat of the moss slush. Because there is no water, they are just sticking to the wood with no mess.
I have noticed that I need to spray them down about 3-4 times a day so far to keep them very moist. It’s only a 25l so I guess the light is drying it out more quickly.
I’m going to leave it about 5 weeks in total, the tank is located in my kitchen which has constant a nice warm environment.
Thank you for work, it’s helping me a lot. Wish me luck 🤞
Sounds good! Never tried javamoss myself, so I'm curious how fast it will grow with this method. Keep us posted!
@@MJAquascaping I will do 👍
Hw is the result?! The Artisan? Itz been4 weeks eager to know
@@rachelburnell9532 Yeah I’m also curious 😊
@@rachelburnell9532 any update?
Genius idea
Great job !
I absolutely love this idea! I might set up a small 10 and do a piece of drift wood in that and when its ready i can put it in my 55g! Ty for the video
Thanks for the inspiration!
❤wow. Beautiful work!
This is very helpful!
Bro you killing it 👍👍👍
Greattt, this is what I looking for. Thankss for your video.
Nice :)! Looking forward to the result!
Me too!
Awesome job idea
Thank you so much know i can finally make a green carpet that doesnt grow so much and take a lot of space just a nice simple green carpet that doesnt require trimming
I feel like Christopher Waltz's character in Django Unchained, except instead of "accurate" I say "That's MOSSY." Very cool!
Genius!👍🏻 thanks
I’m trying it !
thanks again for another great and informative video...have learned so much from your videos
Very welcome
I can genuinely say I've never seen anyone use this painting method before :O
I gotta try it myself haba
Who knew, blending moss, great idea!!
i've got some wood soaking now, for a new tank, got my eye on one piece to try this on
Good luck!
very brilliant idea sir nice
I've done this with terrestrial moss but hadn't thought about doing it with a dry start for aquatic. I have a tank that's mostly hard scaped but not planning on actually setting it up for awhile. Going to do this with the hard scape and just pop it in some plastic bags for awhile I think. So glad I stumbled on to this vid.
uhhh plastic bag idea is genius thank you!
Very super good idea.!!!
What I think? It’s genius, and your tanks all look incredible
I think this is the best way to get the best visual effect on the moss on the root. I'm going to try your way and see if I can achieve the desired effect. Greetings from Poland ✔
Thanks!
Size TÜRKÇE ALT YAZI KULLANDIGİNİZ için ÇOK TEŞEKKÜR EDIYORUM .Ayrıca Mükemmel bir teknik .Başarılarınızın devamını diliyorum .
Thank you for your amazing content MJ. Few days ago I put chopped moss on a couple of driftwoods. I put them in a transparent cage which I sealed with a sheet of kitchen wrap, just as you did. I did this during my military furlough, and asked my brother spraying them everyday to keep them wet. I will get back in some weeks again and will see them.
Any update to your setup?
@@aruljohn534 Things went pretty well. Moss stuck to the driftwood, and they are currently growing in my aquarium
Subscribed! You make me want to do this. Thank you, beautiful tanks
Thanks for the sub!
Cool will try it 👍🏻👍🏻
I did this method a couple days ago. I keep watching the video to tell myself I'm on the right track
Lol
Spektakuler 👍👍👍♥️
Amazing thank you.
Now this is high level botany right here :)
Great video, thanks 👍
Wow bro…. I love your methods……….
Mass smoothy great idea
Great info bro
Thank for ur information bruh
Keep spirit
Im from indonesia
I finally managed to buy some Fissidens...it's been really hard to find in the UK. Really tempted to try this route on my upcoming nano scape.
Brilliant approach for all the reasons you detailed. Impressive. I would have liked to see a few minutes more of the application technique, because it didn't appear the moss smoothie readily left your brush or initially stuck to the wood. How long did it to completely apply all that you ultimately did? Also, how often did you need to pause and spray what you had applied to avoid drying-out? Amazing technique and natural-looking results. I just would've like to see more of the process. Heading over to your lava rock video. Thank you.
I’m definitely going to try this method but first I’ll be doing the dark start method that you have shared in your other video.
I hope it will work out because it will take 2 months to finally set up my tank.
Muito bom, parabéns, vou tentar fazer assim
Many years ago i seen 1 hobbyist use white glue. Meaning the blending is done on white glue. They grew out as nicely and stick nicely too
What a clever idea! I own you one!
Love it
Fantastic!
awesome work and great tips! Thank you! How long do you run the lights?
Interessant Mark, ik had de methode met yoghurt al eens eerder gezien en dat leek me niet zo geschikt. Maar de toevoeging van aquasoil is echt een heel goed idee 💡
Misschien toch eens proberen in de toekomst!
Very cool brother!
Thanks!
He man, het wordt steeds leerzamer....bedankt.
