I have a set of these in short scale for my 1967 Epiphone Rivoli semi-hollow bass and I love them.

It never ceases to amaze me, as an aldercocker bass player of 55 years, who submit string or other types of reviews. And who, pretty obviously, cant play the instrument. But good luck to you!

I have two Hofner 500/2 Club basses. Very similar except pickups and spacing. I have one set up with the factory flatwounds. (Pyramids?) and one setup with black tapewounds. I love the sound and feel of flatwound strings and the nylon tapewounds in particular. I normally play through a ‘62 Bandmaster or a B15 clone, sometimes direct if recording. As far as the strings sounding like my upright, that’s a real stretch, they sound great but it’s a Sound unique to them. The floppy feel of the tapewounds took a while to get used to but I’ve learned to love it.

I’ve never owned a pair myself as I predominantly listen & play metal & other stuff that demands brightness, however I’m hoping to get a p bass kit soon & am leaning towards replacing the strings with tapewounds over flatwounds as I prefer the thuddiness they have, although I don’t think they sound like an upright, I still love the vibe they have, while flatwounds just sound like old roundwounds to me

Mostly Metal myself, but as I grow as a studio bassist, I find myself needing more options. It's definitely not an upright replacement. But it's pretty close to an acoutic-ey fretless sound/feel. P bass is the one type of bass I've never owned...you're making me want to rectify that lol!

semi hollow body + piezo pickup + tapewound strings + IR for upright. Then you can make really similar tone like upright.

I often felt that the viola body style bass blended better with acoustic guitars than most solid body basses. With nylon tape would strings it sounds even closer to an upright bass. That dull thud is not a sound for every style of playing, but it does fill a niche.

Hey! Thanks for a great review! Actuall Hofner violin bass has a medium scale, not a short one - it measures 32.75” from the ball end to silk. So this bass needs medium scale strings. And your ETB92M strings have a medium scale - just look at the top right corner of the strings package it says "medium scale".

    • @DarttheLegend
      @DarttheLegend Год назад +5

It's true that it needs medium scale strings to fit because of how far back the trapeze is, but it is still technically a "short scale" instrument, scale length is measured from nut to bridge (saddles) and does not include the full length of the string or instrument.

They transform the bass into something worth listening to -in my opinion. A set of flats would also suit the bass and not have the sticky feeling of the tape wound.

I've never used flat-wound strings on a fretted bass. I wonder how they'd hold up?

@@jazzman1954 I have this memory of using flatwounds on a fretted bass and the strings really wearing at the frets. But i'm either misremembering or something else was going on.😀

@@firekstudios9011 My experience of using flats for over 30 years is the exact opposite! They don’t mark the frets at all. I have a Fender Jazz that I have done a thousand plus gigs with. The original frets are perfect and only needed their first gentle polish recently and are ready for the next thousand. If I live that long. However, it’s a matter of whatever you prefer in the end. 😊

@@jazzman1954 Ha, I actually meant my frets were making marks on the strings to the point of being problematic. This was when i was young and played a lot, played heavy, and didn't change strings often enough. Should probably try them out again. Thanks!

No , Hofner basses don’t sound like an upright bass. They sound like a badly made tea chest bass with h slightly better intonation.

The bit the string got stuck in is called the tailpiece. The saddles on this bass are the bits of fretwire on top of the bridge.

I didn't care for the Beatle-type bass. The cutaways dig into my leg when I play sitting down and the balance is off when you I use a strap. Get a Hofner Ignition Club bass. Way better and way cooler. I have 2. One with regular flats and another with tape wounds. Total heaven.

I have to agree there. There's a reason the shape isn't used more often. It is fun to use every once in a while in the studio for unique sounds

The Beatles bass model is 500/1. It has a center block, and so it is much more well-balanced comparing to a comletely hollow Ignition model.

@@saboteur1001 The contemporary has a center block, which changes the sound. The Hofner Ignition and German Hofner 500/1 are hollow. But I don’t understand the problem with the shape. It’s so light i don’t even feel it on my legs.
