Man, that piezo with the flats has a lot of that acoustic bass character that so many people keep insisting that you can only get from an acoustic bass.
Thanks AMP! Yeah man, and without the annoying string noise. I haaaaate acoustic strings. I have one acoustic (that wasn't featured in my 'all my basses' video cause it's upstairs in my living room) and it has flats.
They are a lower tension string , I use them and Thomastik Infeld Which are even lower tension, on both their Flat wound , Round wound . I switch between these 3 , when I want to change things up or going after a certain sound.
The tape wounds sounds amazing on that guitar. Takes the harsh (to me ) fizz out of the tone; I'm going to give them a try on my other 5 string for some winter-dark-weather experimentation :)
I think I commented this in your review video of this bass, but I think it would work really well as a fretless, especially with those tape wound strings. As a fretted instrument it is really not my thing but certainly a very interesting instrument.
I prefer tapewound over flatwound. Not necessarily for tone but for feel. I really like the way they feel. Could be a mental thing....well, I guess everything is a mental thing, when you got a head full of spiders and bees....but still....yay tapewound.
Thanks for the great video. I've got one of these basses coming in next week (5-string Maple) and I ordered the Labella Tapewounds after listening to the video. I just couldn't not try this out!
I might try this (or flats) with my Ergodyne. I love that bass, but it would be nice to be able to get darker tones, yet still get brighter when I need it, that bass is still getting quite bright even with the tapewounds.
What do you think about Pressure Wound strings? I have the GHS ones on my custom P-Bass and they sound awesome. Also I just put a set of Rotosound SM55 Pressure Wound strings on my new 32" scale Warmoth Mooncaster semi-hollow bass. Good strings but not quite as good in regards to feel as the GHS. But unfortunately GHS doesn't make them in medium scale. I may try the GHS Precision Flats on that Mooncaster next.
I wish LaBella made a 5 string set of medium scale strings (black tape wound) but they are not to be found. I'd love to put a set on my Ibanez Acoustic bass.
Oooo..... Can you do an A/B comparison with labella white gold tapes? Its their brightest..... Not a lot out there. I bet they might send you a few sets.... Edit: love the vid. I have played on these strings. Really nice.
@@LowEndLobster Labella’s are pretty much my favorite tapewound strings. I’ve used the classic black ones on fretted and fretless basses, also the White/Clear set, but to me the best ones are the Copper White set in the 50-105 gauge. They are warmer and thumpier than the other varieties. I have them on my fretted walnut Rickenbacker Cheyenne, as well as my fretless Tune wb4F. You might like them on your 4003SW! @@mperk1896 the copper ones are smoother, more flexible, and have a warm roundwound tang as well as a thumpy bottom sound. (It’s a great combination). I like the black set for a clackier sort of urb tone. The white/clear ones are brighter with less thump than the other 2 sets.
Another great vid. May I make a suggestion about the segments with the drum machine? The drum machine is always way too quiet. It basically sounds like your normal bass playing with a drum machine way in the background. To tell how a bass sounds "in the mix" (the point, I assume), you'd want to mix the bass lower in volume, closer to a real world blend on a recording. I've noticed this issue in all your vids. Aside from that, awesome as per usual!!
Hi! I think there's just one major bass you seem to pass and that is the G&L L-2000 and now actually the CLF version really works on some of the downsides the regular one has such as the weight and bulkiness. Give it a try. It's the most versatile, beasty bass you'll put your hands on. You'll give that Spector some time off trust me ;) Also, it can be a great serious of mods such as the K-Mod which ads the a similar sound of single coils or even putting some roundwounds on it to tame the mids. I hope you'd give it a try ;). Love your vids BTW all the way from Israel
@@LowEndLobster Oh me oh my ohhh mama! Now we're talking. That should be interesting. Not sure how much of a difference that would be in sense of feel but the tone should be rather similar. Can't wait to see your review of it. I hope you'll love it!
Wish we would have used a old Precision or old Jazz bass with the tape wound strings. And I must be the only person who thinks slapping is pointless and a bit annoying. But I think it’s because I am a lefty that plays right handed so I am awful at slapping 😢!
Those tapewounds sound good for a few weeks and then start unraveling and need to be changed. Also if you don’t wipe them down after each session a little moisture gets trapped in between the windings and the strings start to rust underneath the windings. I went through three sets from LaBella and RotoSound before giving up on them and switching to D’Addario Chromes (flatwound) that don’t rust as easily and last for years. Wait and see for yourself.
WOW... I've been playing labella copper whites daily on a fretless. About 12hrs. per. week for 4 years at this point. Roughly 2,500 hrs. on these strings so far. Never had a string unravel out of 6 labella tape sets, they have a little green tarnish but still sound great! I've had black labella tapes on a P bass for almost a decade. Maybe it depends on your sweats chemistry?
I'm not sure I like this bass too much. That piezo soloed with the LaBellas almost sounds like a mild bass synth. Either way, not my cup of a favorite beverage. However, super interesting vid. I can see how playing them may be different for you, because you've said before that you play with a fairly high action and you tend to dig in.
Sounds more like an upright acoustic bass with the nylon tape wound strings. Some people are looking for that kind of sound to blend better with acoustic instruments.
I have a fretless aria sinsonido Collecting dust. The pickups are actually tiny condenser mics. Any tips on strings? Want to try flats on tapes but worried what happens if I drop the tension.
Thanks Lobster! I have always thought tapewounds sounded cool. Those sound brighter than I would have expected. I have heard some have issues with them especially on noisy basses with shielding and or grounding issues because the strings themselves do not contact metal to metal with the bridge etc. Did you notice any of that? It may be more of an issue with single coil basses especially soloed on one pickup? Also I wonder if using a pick frequently would damage the coating? Last question, is there a type or style of strings that will help out noisier basses, especially active ones, or does It not matter?
Not Lobster, but I have one of these Basses. It is my most dead silent bass. Zero hum at all with any type of string. What you are experiencing is indeed the the lack of grounding from the strings to the bridge.
