I wish reporters and news shows would stop using terms like 'largest in history' etc.
Our population is growing. So, if an identical proportion of voters vote the same way they did in this election compared with the way they voted last time, then the level of any numeric quoted will always be 'the highest in history', simply because there's more people in the country. The number may be true, but it's not useful. A statement like, 'highest proportion of the vote ...' IS useful. But simply 'highest' tells us little or nothing. With a growing population, overall current numbers are pretty much always 'highest', by definition.

True population keeps on growing but there is a fact that more people than ever turned out to vote. Both extremes voted massively, those who wanted the shit out, and those who wanted the shit in.

@@terrylovesenegal - Absolutely, Terry. But numbers should still be reported as a proportion of the population being evaluated, not as an absolute number. For instance, it's obvious that more people voted in the current presidential election than voted in the presidential election of, say 1860. But simply reporting the total number of votes in each is pretty much meaningless in isolation. What we want to evaluate is the PROPORTION of the total population that voted on each election day (and perhaps for whom etc).
