  • While in Fresno to complete shooting for the SP Eastside Branch video, I caught a lot of other action, which I'll link below. There was a break in the rain, so I figured I'd better get all I could. I know many of you folks enjoy the switching stuff, so I hope you enjoy this one!

Engineer is sure Proud of his Horn at the Beginning of the Video. 🤔

SJVRR are always horn heavy, but in his defense here, it is a long diagonal crossing coming from behind a building and they know people are more likely to be diddling with their phone or stereo than watching for big, giant, orange trains!

How interesting! Right there on front of you there is one of those "Google Map Arrows" actually painted on the street! Wow! You see them on Google Maps, but this is the first one I have seen.

Fresno used to have 3 working wig wags in the downtime area not too long ago. Wig Wags got to be very rare across the county now.

FRED is Flashing Rear End Device and a few other inappropriate names. It takes the place of a caboose on the end of a train. It is a box that contains sensors for measuring the air pressure of the airline or brake pipe, a flashing red light facing to the rear, a digital radio to communicate the air pressure to the cab, and a battery to power the light, sensor, and radio. Besides being a marker or indication that the car it is attached to(hung) on the coupler is the end of the train, it monitors the brake-pipe air pressure and relays that by radio to the engineer on the lead locomotive, that way the engineer knows when the brakes are supposed to be released when the airline is up to pressure and can keep tabs on the airline pressure to see if there happens to be a leak and therefore a reduction in brake pipe pressure. I have heard, but don't know for sure, that FRED can also be used by the engineer to dump the air on the end of the train in an emergency. FRED was developed to replace the crew on the caboose for monitoring the brake pipe pressure. I think most FREDs weigh about 15 to 20 lbs. The marker at the end of the train is important to indicate a train to fulfill the definition of a train, that is: a Train is a locomotive(s) with or without cars carrying the proper indications on the front and rear end to travel between two indicated points on the railroad. Feel free to edit the definition as I don't know where my copy of "Rights of Trains" is.

was worried when I could not find your vids.

I've been posting regularly. RUclips is doing some strange things that are making it more difficult to find things that don't get a million views. They've also made it VERY difficult to find videos more than a few months old with a generic search. That is why I have so many playlists. It narrows down the type of videos I make which makes it much easier to find what you are looking for.

I would like to see the freight transfer facility between Reedley & Dinuba on the SJVR branch line at the old Sequoia Forest Industry saw mill location or SP Ivory Pine siding. I understand that Gennese & Wyoming has bought this location for rail load transfer and car storage.

I don't often get up that way, but I'll look into those locations next time I am and see if I can catch something working there. Thanks for the idea and for checking it out!

I thought the flat spots on the rail car tires was because somebody didn't check the air pressure in them

That track they're backing into actually does not connect to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe. It's dead end.

So what is it that they are doing? All the shuffling around of cars and tracks and what not.

    • @MarkClayMcGowan

Local trains have to be put together in a very specific order depending on where the cars are going, how many are going there, and whether or not the car is loaded or is going to be loaded. The destination may be an industry or a yard, but the cars being in order keeps the moves to a minimum on delivery.

  • @waynemiller7382

Graffiti on a freight car is one thing and we see it as the norm yes something I model. But graffiti on a locomotive is unacceptable. I hate seeing the image of a locomotive desecrated by graffiti like shown at 1:28 . very sad.
