I played the crap out of all 3 of these games as a kid. All 3 were the Japanese releases and I had to use my "Golden Finger" mod chip that plugged into the back of the console like a game shark. My copy of Dragon Ball Z Legends was a burned dvd-r. And it may have ended up being called "A Legend" in the European release but my copy had "Dragon Ball Z Legends" written on it. I remember having a spring inside the lid of the disc tray and having to initially put in a U.S. PS1 game to unlock the region lock... *sigh* nostalgia... great vid. Thanks. And I really did enjoy the heck out of all 3 o f these games in the 90s because that was all that existed, and I was thrilled that it existed. And yes, Legends was a lot of fun despite the goofy mechanics. 6 characters fighting at the same time lol

So I was expecting this to be one of those videos where you just talk about the game a bit and show it off a bit but the fact that you actually got in depth with these games and explained them sucked me right in. Great video.

Ultimate Battle 22 was my first DBZ game, too! I was too young to really know how to play properly, but that didn't stop me from pouring dozens of hours into it throughout my childhood. It was also the first game I played with friends a lot.

The second game was ELITE when it came out.
Imagine you end up with a dbz, game when your 9, you have the translator disk, and you get to re-enact a 1v3 Gohan vs cell jrs.
You could also knock opponents through the terrain - a feature ahead of its time.
Was one hell of a game.

This is a great video! You're love of the Dragon Ball franchise is palpable, and I just subscribed to your channel. However, I do have to say that spelling "Buu" as "Boo" isn't exactly wrong.
While the katakana for the name would be written in English as "Buu", his name, as well as the wizards he was created/released by, get there names from the famous phrase coined by Disney's Cinderella "Bibidi-Babidi-Boo". "Buu" is the closest approximation you can get to "Boo" using the Japanese alphabet, so while "Buu" may be the more correct spelling, "Boo" more accurately portrays the meaning intended by Akira Toriyama to an English speaking audience. Freeza's name however, is incorrect.
Freeza’s name is a pun on all things relating to the cold. As both Freeza’s and Coola’s names end in a short “a” vowel (rather than the long â/aa which usually signifies “er” in kana spellings of English words), Freeza’s name is typically spelled with an “a” at the end (as opposed to “Freezer”). Logic would of course follow that his brother’s name should in turn be spelled in a similar fashion as “Coola” (rather than “Cooler”). FUNimation chooses to spell the names as “Cooler” and “Frieza”, removing the consistency between the names and their final vowels.
The actual English word “freezer” would be written out in katakana as フリーザー / furîzâ, so it would stand to reason that we should spell the Dragon Ball character’s name as “Freeza” instead of “Freezer”.
"Vegetto" in Final Bout is a preferable spelling to Funimation's use of "Vegito" once you learn that Kakarot in Japanese would actually be Kakarotto in English, as the fusions are supposed to have a fused name as well, and "Vegito" leans heavily into the "Vegeta" side. The "I" actually comes from the ""I" in Vegeta's Japanese name "Bejīta", if you were curious. Really, there is no accurate way to translate Vegetto's original name of "Bejitto" without explaining how Japanese names work, and how some things just can't be translated 100% accurately in English. It is for this reason that I have a preference for the Viz manga translation of "Vegerot", as though it is rather silly sounding, it accurately gets across the intention of the fused name going by a combination of Vegeta and Goku's Saiyan names.
If you're curious about any other characters names, I suggest you look up MistareFusion here on RUclips. He has a series where he goes into depth on the Dragon Ball manga as well as anime where the names he uses are as accurate to the original Japanese intention as can be understood by a native English speaker. He also provides a brief explanation of why he chooses to pronounce the name in such a way as to allow for a better understanding. He also has a few videos specifically about character names, why they're written how they are, why they're translated how they are, as well as any puns or double meanings they're derived from.
If you've taken the time to read all of this then I appreciate it, and nice work on a wonderful video!

The wild part about Final Bout is that GT didn’t even air in the US yet, and the internet use isn’t what it is today, so it probably shocked a lot of fans to see there’s a sequel

Great video! Just a heads up, Boo is not spelled wrong in Final Bout. That's how his name is meant to be spelled, the dub changed it to Buu. The manga and subs both spell it Boo, as in Bibidi Babidi Boo, the Disney song

I played Dragonball: Final Bout, the original Japanese release version. Bought it on the internet as well as a playstation converter that allowed me to play imported games. So at the time I was the cool kid who had the only dragonball game with Buu and GT characters in it. I managed to have fun with it even though it was terrible. I love the intro cinematic and I like to play The Biggest Fight music in my group exercise classes. Something that always bothered me was how much Great Ape Bebi looks like Alf.

I really couldn’t tell if ssj4 Goku was meant to seem like he is an all powerful badass with his slow walk and barely visible movements or if they just fucked up the controls for him somehow and decided not to fix it 😮 it’s awful either way

Vegetto is actually the proper way to spell his name
For whatever reason, Funimation changed Goku's Saiyan name to Kakarot from Kakarotto. And then added an I to Vegito
    Vegeta + Kakarotto = Vegetto

Dragon Ball Final Bout isn't a GT game. The Dragon Ball GT name was only put in the English versions.

    • @dragon666777
      @dragon666777 8 дней назад +1

It's still pretty heavily centered around GT though, between the characters taken directly from or being based on GT taking up almost half of the roster (8 out of 17), adult Goku's design specifically being based on his appearance in the first GT episode, and Baby being the final boss
Not sure why they didn't just title it as a GT game, but given GT was already proving itself to be a failure during this game's development, I assume they wanted a more broad appeal

I gotta admit, I really like Dragon Ball Z Legend, I also have the Saturn version which runs a lot smoother, and (in my opinion) looks a bit nicer since it uses more pixelart elements for super attacks over low poly 2D. It also has more detailed environments and a few destructable environmental details. The story mode certainly can drag, but it also offers unique events and cool optional scenes. I enjoy hopping into it every now and then just doing some VS CPU.

As someone who grew up playing DB games from the famicom all the way to now, Dragon Ball Legends for the PSX (and the Saturn) are severely, severely underrated. The soundtrack, while nothing too special, isn't horrible by any means. It feels DB at its core. Also, while the specials might take too long at times, these big finishers do the fights justice.
For example, during the Frieza fight, start it out by allowing Frieza to kill Vegeta. After that, let Goku hit Frieza with the spirit bomb, which means you activate your special attack twice. Swap him with Krillin, and allow him to die. Lo and behold, a very angry SSJ Goku is there, ready to rip Frieza a new one - and you have an amazing change in OST. The game rewards you for playing as closely to how the fights played out in the manga as possible, allowing you to unlock its true ending.
It's unwieldy and a little tricky to get a handle on, sure, but there's a reason why it still received praise from critics. For myself, it's so much better than Ultimate Battle 22.

DBZ Legends was the best, an actual story mode 3 vs 3, most characters. Cons, worst graphics and Couldn't do super moves only when the cutscene activates.
Ultimate Battle 22, decent amount of characters great soundtrack, epic intro , it's just the gameplay sucked it was too slow.
Final Bout..Honestly the best thing about the game was the intro, one of the best, the soundtrack and SS4.. we didn't even know SS4 existed until playing Final Bout and it looked so wild and powerful, other than that it was the weakest of the three games, low characters roster, no story mode, terrible voices on some versions, slow gameplay, one thing i did like was the aura charge and the mini cutscenes for super attacks beam struggles but the rest of the gameplay was garbage, we all loved it at the time because it was when DBZ was at it's pinnacle in the show so we always fantasized about playing a Dragonball game..Then came Budokai 1 and we forgot all about the ps1 games the first Budokai blew us all away. Budokai 1 changed everything..without the first Budokai game there wouldn't be the Budokai series there wouldn't be a tenkaichi series and Raging Blast etc lets all thank Budokai 1 for opening up the doors.
