Excellent demo once again, Shawn - I can hear what the pedal does even through youtube compression. I really like how pettyjohn pedals have this open sounding quality to them (probably the high headroom and primo components) and how that lets me choose what comes out of the amp... so many ways I can use a pedal, like the crush compressor, which can also double as a boost or an eq (with or without compression thrown in with the blend). Brilliant designs!
Great demo. I bought one of these and it works very well. I'm able to dial in HB's, P-90's, & SC's just the way I want them. You have to experiment with the switches & knobs to find the best tone, but it's definitely in there. I wrote down the settings for each guitar to make it easier for me. The only negative thing I can say is that there is a significant "pop" whenever I toggle the pedal on & off - much more than with any of my other effects. Isn't a really big deal since for me it's an "always on" pedal. FYI, I located mine at the beginning of the pedal chain & haven't tried any other locations. I'm also running it at 18V.
Hi Shawn, Im becoming such a big fan of your playing, its ridiculous! Also, i found pettyjohn through you and I have to say they are the best pedals I have ever tried. You should definitely consider doing youtube videos of home recording and walkthroughs of how you get those precious sounds through what seems a simple setup. Im sure your following would enjoy this very much! Like always, keep it comin! Cheers!
Thanks so much for the kind words Gabriel! Yes Stephen Pettyjohn is a very talented guy indeed. I think doing a walk through video would be a good idea!
Beautiful composition, and great playing! Simply masterful... I love the Pettyjohn stuff. I have the Chime, and it sounds so 'full-range', very hi-fi. Most pedals by comparison really suppress certain frequencies, and boost others. The Chime seems to effect the entire spectrum, in a very musical way. I am sure on your demo tone here that your base tone was already killer, but the way the Filter top it off is the icing on the cake!
Shawn another most "excellent" showcase and demo of a really fine sounding "EQ" style pedal that should greatly compliment any amp, guitar and pedal rig combo! Your playing at the first of the video was "heavenly" sounding! :-) I will put this pedal under my radar for sure! Would love to hear your PRS McCarty through this pedal! Mac
Some cool outside the box thinking from PettyJohn here...I really dig the pro recording studio influence. And, of course beautiful tones and playing Shawn. I think this box would be absolutely awesome with the EF86 channel of my Magic Amps Brit MK2 which is very sweet sounding but in vintage Vox style very limited in terms of EQ. Oh, and hint. Even though it's electric guitar tuned I bet it sounds killer on DI'd acoustic!
Shawn, in all seriousness, can you run a Kickstarter or something to create an instrumental album? Your tracks are so accessible by a variety of audiences, Re: PJ's Filter, it's obviously awesome for very specific situations, but without presets, is this practical as a resident on a board? I would think you have to do a lot of tweaking depending on what guitar/pedal combo you're using.
Beautiful song lovely chords. So for bar gigs and switching guitars around how would you compare this to the Buxom Boost pedal? This sounds very good and maybe better for fine adjustments but the Buxom Boost seems like it would be easier to change on the fly at gigs.
Thanks so much Tom! The Filter is a very musical EQ pedal and the and Buxom is a fabulous boost pedal with EQ but it's hard to really draw a comparison. I think for fly gigs either pedal would work well within certain parameters. The Filter isn't a boost pedal per se so if that's a need for you then you might want to go that route. If you just need a really sweet pre or post board EQ than the Filter would fit the bill. Both really great pedals.
To add to shawns points, the Filter is designed with enough gain pn tap to be used in most boost situations. With eq flat, it has around 6 db of gain, if you use boosting in the filters, its more. Cheers!
Yes. Yes, it internally doubles what you input, so 9 is 18 or 18 is 36. 36 is cleaner and has more headroom. I also suggest upgrading the op amp to a discrete 994 chip, magical 3D tones pop out once it's in. Cheers.
Thanks I've always wanted a strat with one and your playing confirms it! (along with the Pettyjohn Filter and your playing ;) Is that your original music?
Tasty playing! Beautiful composition as well. You sound fantastic on any guitar that you play, but I especially like it when you play that PRS. Is that the Universal Audio OX in the background?
Hi Shawn that was a very enjoyable piece of music with some nice chord changes, is there any chance you could let me know the chords for the first 30 seconds of the song please? Cheers.
I only saw your reply by chance because the youtube notifications aren't working for me at the moment. Thanks very much for that mate, I appreciate you taking the time to share. 👍 Wow that's a real alphabet soup of chords, I don't actually know most of them but I'll keep watching this over and over to get an idea of the fingering.
Hey Stephen, those are actually the KRK V8's and they're really great monitors especially at the price point. They were highly recommended by a friend of mine.
Right on! Yeah that DGT is a great guitar. I'm generally all over the place with all my guitars when it comes to volume and tone settings but I always try and keep the settings full up for demos.
Thanks Shawn! Greatly appreciated. I've had my DGT since 2011. Ten top purchased at Wildwood Guitars. I've always loved the bridge pickup, but I must admit I've been all over the map on my feelings for the neck pickup. This is at full volume for both pickups by the way, thus the reason for my question. I do find that the difference between the two pickups is reduced somewhat with the volumes rolled back a bit (treble bleed circuit as well) but then I run the risk of "thinning" out the bridge too much in order to relieve some of the "woofiness" I hear in the neck at full volume. I was contemplating a Lollar Low Wind Imperial for the neck of my DGT, but now your demo of the PettyJohn Filter has got me thinking in another direction. Interesting pedal for sure. Like the 18 volt option as well. Curious if you have tried the Deluxe version of the Filter? Take care Chuck
Right on Chuck. I too contemplated losing the neck pickup for something else but that DGT is just so...DEE GEE TEE!!;) I can't bring myself to mess with it. I've only played the standard filter but I'm sure deluxe is even better as I believe it is discrete op amp driven.
Thanks again. Heard the neck vs the bridge conundrum from quite a few DGT owners/players. I've managed to dial in some very nice, balanced tones (from neck to bridge) with the volumes down, but can't say the same with the volumes on full. Love the tones with the volumes down, but want to add/replace some of the dynamics and gain that's seems to be lost when the volumes are down. Beautiful cleans for sure though. Was even thinking of a very mild, transparent OD as well (Greer Lightspeed seems to come to mind here) but now I'm thinking the PettyJohn filter might be the way to go. Looks like I could "alter" the neck enough with the volumes on full to make it play nicer with the bridge, and it also looks like I could add some "hair" and thickness back to the notes (as an always on pedal) with the volumes turned down. Mmmmm. Decisions. Decisions. ha ha
Vastly different players! I guess it boils down to personal taste. In my opinion pete has intact technical skills and musicianship, but Shawn literally has the best sound and the best taste ive heard in a modern guitar player. The lines he creates are just perfect

Thanks so much Kari and thanks for tuning in! Yeah Stephen is a talented guy.
I like the variety and the tasteful playing.
Thanks so much!
So Shawn Tubbs does it again. A wonderful piece of music that, as usual, leaves me wanting more.
Thanks so much Mats!
I am really liking these Pettyjohn pedals.
Stephen Pettyjohn is a very talented dude!

Thanks so much for watching! Reach out to Pettyjohn about the "pop" issue for sure. Really good people.
Excellent and well thought out demo.
magic touch. thank you shawn. j.
You're very kind. Thanks for tuning in!
Great pedal and great video, thanks Shawn! I was glad to hear the .45 Caliber thrown in there. I love mine!
Thanks so much Phil!
Very nice changes, and great tones.
Thanks so much and thanks for tuning in!!

I was so cought by your playing that I completely forgot about the review for a moment.

Thanks so much Mac and thanks for tuning in!
amazing amazing - super toneful, melodic and vocal-like note choice....
Thanks very much!!
Everything about this video is great. Loved the intro song!
You are a true tonemaster, my friend, and they say it's in the fingers!
This. Is. So. Good.
Thanks Bryce!
Love that DGT goldtop with birds. You don’t see too many of those
The tones in the opening melody were reminiscent of Chet Atkins. Beautiful !
That tone wow😍
Bro this is really cool.
Thanks so much Tony! Hope you're doing well!
Amazing demo ! waiting for an album ...
Thanks so much!!

Thanks Grant! Yeah I have yet to try it with a DI AC GTR but I'm sure it would sound great!
Please elaborate on the phrase "bell frequencies." Thank you; great demos.
The frequency bandwidth is more bell shaped than pointed. Thanks so much for watching!
www.ovnilab.com/articles/eqtypes.shtml
Thank you; fine article that explains EQ as well. "Bell" as in bell-shaped curve. I get it now. That's the tone I'm searching for.
Thanks for watching!
great review !!! and i would like to ask which model of the filter in your demo ? Deluxe or Standard ? thanks man ! great work !!!
It's the Standard! The Deluxe has a Silver Nameplate and a dual 990 style discrete opamp and is available through our website only. Cheers!
Thanks! That one is the Standard.

You're very kind Rob. I need to sort something out.

I see you have a dirty shirley head behind you what kind of pedal do you use on your amp to brighten it up some?
Is this analog?
Also, is there any tone difference when using 9V power supply and not 18V?
Yes. Yes, it internally doubles what you input, so 9 is 18 or 18 is 36. 36 is cleaner and has more headroom. I also suggest upgrading the op amp to a discrete 994 chip, magical 3D tones pop out once it's in. Cheers.
it would be great to hear these pedals through a fender Hot rod or RI deluxe, seeing how so many backline amps are those..
As a former owner of a hotrod deville - I NEVER want to hear one again!
Do you mind sharing which pickups were in the L&L strat :)
Lollar Dirty Blonde set.
Great video!
Thanks so much for tuning in!!
Incredible! Were either of those guitars floating bridge tremolo bars btw?
Thanks! Yes, they were both floating trems.
Thanks I've always wanted a strat with one and your playing confirms it! (along with the Pettyjohn Filter and your playing ;) Is that your original music?
Thanks for tuning in!
Tasty playing! Beautiful composition as well. You sound fantastic on any guitar that you play, but I especially like it when you play that PRS.
Is that the Universal Audio OX in the background?
Thanks so much Kenny! Yes that is the OX back there. They sent it out for me to check out. It's pretty killer!
Shawn Tubbs Thanks for the reply Shawn! I look forward to hearing what you do with it🎸
does it come with a wall wart power supply.
Hi Shawn that was a very enjoyable piece of music with some nice chord changes, is there any chance you could let me know the chords for the first 30 seconds of the song please?

Thanks very much! (B / G#min6 / ) (B6 / F#aug /) (Ebmin7b5 / Ab7#9 /) (C#min7 / F#7#9 /)(B / G#min7 / ) (G / F#/ ) (F#min7 / E /) (C#min7 B //)

shawn. i see u are using krk v4 now. what other monitors did u consider. thanks. pps picked up a filter based on this vid, thanks
Hey Stephen, those are actually the KRK V8's and they're really great monitors especially at the price point. They were highly recommended by a friend of mine.
Hey Shawn, do you use a iso box for you speaker? Thanks
Hey John thanks for the question. I don't use an iso box. I have a another room about the size of a walk in closet for my cabinet.
I have a DGT as well. Are you running the volumes full up on the guitar or are they backed off a bit? Same with the universal tone knob. Thanks. :)
Right on! Yeah that DGT is a great guitar. I'm generally all over the place with all my guitars when it comes to volume and tone settings but I always try and keep the settings full up for demos.

Clear my schedule - I’ve got a new piece to learn!
What speaker/speakers are you using?
Thanks for tuning in. I was using my Bogner 2x12 with Eminence CV75 speakers.
Beautiful thanks
yes!
what cant you play?
;) You're very kind but there's quite a bit I can't play. Thanks for tuning into my vids!
Is it really studio?
Studio-grade components? Yes.
sounds like some double harmonic major
We have another Pete Thorn here lol.
Chris Davies except he has a different taste imho
I could never play that well or be that good looking.
Vastly different players! I guess it boils down to personal taste. In my opinion pete has intact technical skills and musicianship, but Shawn literally has the best sound and the best taste ive heard in a modern guitar player. The lines he creates are just perfect
