I personally think this and the 1948 adaption are the best versions of the "Oliver Twist" tale to date. The way that we see the young inmate in Oliver's dorm driven to insanity due to hunger is so upsetting but really well done. The musical was fine, but it unintentionally turned a story about serious subject matters like child abuse and slavery, crime and poverty into something fun and comedic, and sometimes, it didn't really work.
