Hi eric, we own several of these in my asphalt paving company and we love them. I would recommend to anybody using then as a handheld to wrap a small piece of duct tape around the battery pack. Because if the radio is dropped the battery pack can break open.
Hey Erik, this is the first CB I ever bought about 4 years ago after watching your videos. Glad you're finally reviewing this guy. Looking forward to your range tests. I use it with a Little Wil on my car. With my Uniden 980 as my base station with an Antron 99, I can connect out to at least 12 miles (as far as I've tried so far). Wishing you a continued recovery.
Several manufacturers had similar CBs and a ton of manufacturers bought the battery mold so the batteries could be interchanged. Standard Horizon used them on marine radios plus the HX series, Cherokee AH27 and AH54, at least one Cobra, at least one export, etc. Whether the AA shell or the NiCad pack, they all worked interchangeably.
Groovy, cool beans ,I am not the only one that still says " Groovy " Wondering where you are located from me. I am in the foothills of NC. Hickory exactly.wonder if we can hear each other.
I have this radio and I love it. I bought a 3 Ft. telescopic antenna to replace the rubber duckie and its a great improvement. Great Video. Thank you Eric.
I'm late pokin my nose in but I saw your video and being new to cb radios I thought i would see what you have to say about the 75-822. I just bought one, 3/27/24 so naturally i want to get some edjumacation on something I can actually relate to. Thanks for the video.
Had a Rat Shack TRC-232 that I used mostly as a handheld for many years. Dug it out some months ago and put batteries in it. No worky. :( Gotta dig into it and see if I can fix it. Nabbed the Midland 75-822 off Amazon and I'm really happy with it! Plan is to put it in my 2005 Grand Prix GT2 with a mag mount antenna. Got the external speaker/mic for it too. I have to fab up a dash mount out of some aluminum and High Strength Velcro (I hate drilling holes). I have a Rat Shack 40ch SSB buried in the back of the console under the ashtray in my 1999 Grand Prix GTP (Supercharged) with a *real* antenna mount coming out over the right tailpipe with QDs on several antennas from a 2' 'glass shorty, to the venerable old HQ-27 (IIRC), or even a 9' SS whip. Got a Turner Super Sidekick power mic in that one. ;)
US version of the Alan 42. It can work with the Midland dual mike if you get the right dongle. It can also be modified to extend the number of channels. The low power setting is compatible as input for a small 35W power amplifier. If you use the car adapter you MUST connect an external antenna. BTW you need a better antenna than that rubber stump that comes with the radio.
Had a hand held years ago in the old 1960 F100 (around 1985) and it worked GREAT- cant remember if was a midland or realistic radio shack, but i love it. Everything was in the palm of the hand. That new 75-822 is Fantastic looking had to order one today; it to bad the old radio i had did not hardly have any extras on it and definitely NO weather stations
In my distant past I owned the Realistic TRC 217...a 5-watt radio. I had to extend the antenna out the window but drivers 10 miles away could communicate with me. It was an awesome little radio. It died a few years back. SAD!!!
If you can find out where the mic gain pot is on the board that would be awesome, mine is extremely weak. Gotta pretty much kiss and yell. Can't find a schematic on that web thing. That belt clip is great for the RAM mounts designed to hold belt clips.
That Midland CB look the RELM MPU32A and MPV32A My buddy purchase the MPU32A for GMRS back in1994 , because our Town Watch made the switch from CB to GMRS back in 1993. Back everyone that dabled in GMRS used used or surplus Part 90 gear or modified Part 97 gear.
Hey Erik, I'd be hesitant to cut up the car adapter. Historically Midland would have the adapter unavailable separately. I'm actually surprised they have them available now. If I were still using mine as a primary radio I'd pick up two or three and set them aside.
Bought mine a handful of years ago, didn’t have a charge light, so , that’s new. This is a quality radio that I can get out and receive up to 3 miles ( signal depending ) weather,etc.. I like that it has adapter to run mobile antenna in the car, works almost as well as C.B. I’ve carried it on road trip in friend’s vehicle with only rubber duckie, works well for bear 🐻 reports, find your lane.
QUESTION: When it comes to small, Compact, or Mini CB Radios are they inferior from a performance point of view compared to the Full Size Radios? It seems to me that if they are all 4 Watt output they should perform the same considering antennas and other variables are equal. I have the 75-822 already with the tuned K30 antenna. I'm considering getting a full size SSB/AM/FM if the reply comments persuade me.
If they want some of us to buy an HT, they need to come with an AM/SSB version like Cherokee AH-100, Magnum 1012 , Albrecht AE-2990/Super Radio SS 301 AFS/ Dragon SS-301. We won't buy an AM only CB radio (Mobile/HT/Base), it doesn't make any sense. If manufacturers can't add SSB in it, it's not for us. By the way, nice video. TNX.
It’s cool from the standpoint that it’s compact and still does a lot of the functions you need it to do, but it’ll never be 70s chrome-knobbed Smokey and the Bear cool, come back lol
I'm looking at an inexpensive adapter unit that plugs into a home wall outlet, and then has a cord terminating in a "cigarette lighter"-style female receptacle that is intended to allow the indoor use of devices typically used in cars. The adapter unit's specs are given as follows: "Input voltage: 100-240V; Output voltage: 12V; Output current: 2A; Frequency: 50 / 60HZ; Wattage: 24W, for Car charger or Car lighter Plug in, bring your car appliances back home." I'm wondering if that adapter would be safe to use with the Midland handheld, with its cigarette lighter adapter affixed, and running to my apartment-size antenna, such that I could use the Midland as a base station, plugged into the wall outlet in my kitchenette here in my studio apartment, without worrying about batteries of any kind?
You can run a coax between the Midland and another CB with the 12v plug in and the other CB will RX TX through the Midland rubber ducky antenna. Why this works and doesn’t blow up the radios?
I just hooked this radio up to a wilson 1000 on top of my pickup and I scanned though the channels almost every channel had chatter but channel 15 can in clear and I was picking up people is South Carolina Mississippi Louisiana and Missouri they were calling their names and area codes is it possible this radio was picking up ssb or what else could it be
Hey Erik, This is the one I'm ordering online. I have a question for you first, though. I'm planning to get the RoadPro (RP-711) 24" Magnet Mount Stainless Steel CB Antenna Kit for it, as I expect the rubber duckie antenna will be pretty worthless on the interstate (I'm using this to communicate with truckers on long road trips). Does it come with a built-in SWR meter for calibration with the antenna, or should I purchase one? Thanks!
I bought one of these and I am unable to open the battery compartment. I follow instructions, and I feel if I pull any harder, something is going to break. It doesn't open, as of the button mechanism isn't moving the inner latch. Anyone else have this problem?
I have 3 of these, ... They work well for short transmitting, .... For long talking, ... I have noticed they don't work that well. They tend to get hot and start breaking up.
Was wondering if you did a range test on the Randy yet and if not can you do it with the midland as a side by side test a friend of mine is thinking of getting in to CB’s and I was thinking of something like these as a Frist so he can play with in car or Easily tack in house and play with it. just gave him a book on home made antennas was thinking randy with Built in SWR. But so many options lol
Hey Erik, would you ever consider doing a video on the differences between something like HAM and GMRS and the pros and cons of each? I know you've mentioned before you're focused much more on CB stuff but I think it'd be interesting. I've been wanting to get into GMRS for off roading and hiking and stuff like that.
Nice cb radio I really thinking about getting me a president randy fcc and If your ever on CB radio just give me a shout my Handheld is rusty nail and I transmit on Channel 4 and 5.
Rubber duck antenna netted me 1 and 1/2 blocks in busy Los Angeles, one radio at home one inside a moving car. With a Cheap small $15 antenna on car trunk i got 1-2 miles to the rubber duck radio at home
I have the Cherokee AH-100 handheld with SSB. It will accept the same battery pack and lower power supply/external antenna jack as this Midland. The best of my knowledge, this is the only SSB handheld ever manufactured. It's just okay in terms of modulation. My Realistic TRC-216 handheld with the 4-foot telescoping antenna with the coil and external mic jack will eat it alive on modulation. It modulates over 90 percent in stock form. How is the modulation on the Midland? I have considered buying one of these Midlands and a President New Yorker/Virginia antenna and pairing it with one of those little RM Italy KL35 linear amps. I have one in my Pilot that I can see almost a 50-watt swing with, depending on what radio I'm using to drive it.
I don't think there will ever be a time in my life where I'll understand why handheld radios were built with a selectable power mode. I have a few Baofengs that have a selectable output between 1w 3w 5w and 8w or something like that?. What guy says to themself, hey, today I want to transmit three feet beyond my mailbox, I'll select two watts!!!...Silly!!!🤣
Handhelds mostly run off of battery power. So if you happen to have a fixed distance you need to transmit, you then see which power level is the minimum you need to make that happen. This extends your battery life. I use a pair of Midland GMRS radios for traveling. Since we’re following right behind one another, we set them to low power in advance and were able to use them for about 11 hours without recharging
Hi eric, we own several of these in my asphalt paving company and we love them. I would recommend to anybody using then as a handheld to wrap a small piece of duct tape around the battery pack. Because if the radio is dropped the battery pack can break open.
that is great advice for the battery packs

I had that in my blazer. When I was younger. Worked pretty well with a Wilson little Will.

An aftermarket antenna is a must. The rubber duck is almost worthless. It will make a world of difference. I am astounded by the receive of this unit
I have this radio and I love it. I bought a 3 Ft. telescopic antenna to replace the rubber duckie and its a great improvement. Great Video. Thank you Eric.
I also bought the telescoping antenna for it and it really makes a big difference for the better
that extra antenna would make a huge difference
Cool little radio ! Thanks for doing all these reviews!
Glad you like them! I feel very blessed to have the chance to play with all these radios.
I'm late pokin my nose in but I saw your video and being new to cb radios I thought i would see what you have to say about the 75-822. I just bought one, 3/27/24 so naturally i want to get some edjumacation on something I can actually relate to. Thanks for the video.

It's amazing that the control surface looks almost identical to my old Cobra 45 WX HT.

Yes, it would help a lot if you hooked it to an external antenna.
Can we use 1.5v rechargeable batteries instead of the 1.2v ?
I am not sure if you can or not, maybe someone else can chime in to answer it.
I have a Uniden handheld and an old Realistic 3 ch, 3watt.What i would really like is a handheld sideband cb.
