Came across this by accident and it brought back one of the sporting highlights of my life because I was at the swimming pool in Atlanta when this race was on and I couldn't talk for 2 or 3 days after because I had screamed my head off for all 1500m. It also possibly saved my life because that was the night the moron let the bomb off at the main Centennial Park sound stage and for many nights before we were within 5 metres from where he planted the bomb.

One of the greatest sporting moments ever. I'll never forget watching this fantastic comeback by a great champion and a great human being. What a fantastic testament to the human spirit.

This was when Kieran just managed to qualify on the last lane and then true champion quality emerged from the ashes to win Gold.

For much of the 90s, he was my favourite swimmer. Not Popov, Biondi, Morales et al, Perkins was Superman.
Vladimir Salnikov, the outstanding long distance swimmer was considered so far ahead of his time, when he broke the 15min barrier, that you couldn't see anyone breaking this record for a very long time.
Enter 1 Kieran Perkins. He simply took the 400 & 1500m events to an even higher level. This provided the impetus for Grant Hackett to take up the torch & succeed.
    A True Champion - Perkins.

I remember getting up to watch this from Sydney I was 13. I was following Perkins because everyone was writing him off so I got up to support him. I remember screaming at the tv in excitement seeing him pull away and take victory. Great memories thanks Perkins ❤👍. I wasn’t even a swimmer 😅

I remember seeing this on TV early one Saturday morning back in 1996. Damn if I didn't get the feeling all along that he would win. I wish I had put money on my gut feeling.
    Damn lol

After Hoffmann beat Perkins for first time in 1991 since that Perkins won every races. Kinda suspected that Hoffmann used steroids from East Germany era.

This performance by Kieren Perkins is up there with the greatest ever. He only just does enough to qualify for the final and then forces the rest of the field to gas out. I liken this performance to the Rumble in the Jungle between George Foreman and Muhammad Ali. Ali used his experience to survive and outbox and gas out Foreman and then knocked him out. Kieren Perkins used the same tactics here from the outside lane and outgassed and knocked out the competition. Only the greats have the guts and the will to do this. Well done Kieren Perkins. This race has made you a legend.,

Before the race even started, I told all my friends that had gathered over food and wine to watch the race that Kieren would win by 5 seconds.
They all looked at me like I was some kind of lunatic! 🥴
They had every reason to do so. Until THIS happened ! Fantastic performance by a Champion ! 👍✨
