- RPCS3's highly anticipated macOS release is now available now for download! rpcs3.net/down... Thanks to nas building upon work done to get RPCS3 working on macOS in 2018 by kvark and other developers prior. Our team saw this as a good opportunity to get this into a good state.
Nekotekina, GalCiv and Clienthax implemented LLVM support so performance wasn't horrible. While kd-11 assisted with the graphics pipeline. Thanks to MoltenVK maturing since 2018, some roadblocks were resolved further helping macOS builds become a reality.
As these builds are new, none of the games on our compatibility list have been tested on macOS. And due to some mac specific issues we can't exactly change a game to ingame from playable just because it doesn't work on macOS. That being said, games listed as Playable are much more likely to work well.

KNOWN ISSUES:
No support for NVIDIA GPU's
Only PlayStation controllers are currently supported
Random crash when disconnecting controller with macOS 12 (Monterey), especially over Bluetooth (WIRED RECOMMENDED)
LIMITATIONS
macOS performance is much lower than Windows/Linux due to using MoltenVK instead of Metal and other factors (see below)
M1 Performance is slow due to requiring Rosetta 2, and not having AVX instructions. If RPCS3 gets a native M1 Port Rosetta 2 will no-longer be required.
Apple's drivers working differently will cause RPCS3 to exhibit more macOS specific issues
Lack of TSX support due to Apple using old microcode hurts performance of some Intel Mac PC's.
We expect things to improve over time, not only from RPCS3, but from changes made to macOS and upstream libraries we use. That being said, we don't see macOS reaching comparable performance to Windows/Linux anytime soon. Although Asahi Linux may be quite good for M1 Macs if they have their own GPU drivers.
HISTORY OF RPCS3 ON MACOS
RPCS3 actually had macOS builds working prior to 2016, back when only a few games were playable, and everything ran poorly. These old macOS builds were possible due to RPCS3 only requiring OpenGL 2.1.
When OpenGL 4.3 became a requirement in 2016, macOS builds were thought to be abandoned as Apple refused to support newer versions of OpenGL. Later, in 2018, former contributor kvark implemented gfx-rs. Then began work on MoltenVK support, however due to its infancy, multiple roadblocks were discovered causing macOS builds to be abandoned once again.
Thankfully some of these issues have been resolved. And thanks to
new efforts from our team macOS builds are in a good state for the first time!

Its free software. The amount of effort required to make this port for such little return in investment actually showcases a lot of passion more than anything
*For everyone who wants to play Persona 5 with M1 Macbooks* New official version of RPCS3 has been released. Now with this version and some customized settings I'm able to play Persona 5 at 720p or 1080p with good FPS average (from 30 to 60 FPS in most cases, down to 20-25 only in places full of stuff and people but still playable) using the basic model of MacBook Air M1 (8-core CPU, 7-core GPU, 8 GB RAM). To achieve this result, you have to change some CPU's settings: right click on the game, select "Change Custom Configuration", then in CPU tab set *SPU XFloat Accuracy* to "Relaxed XFloat", *SPU Block Size* to "Mega" and *Preferred SPU Threads* to "2" (remember to save these changes before closing the menu!). Then to enable 60 FPS, right click on the game, select "Manage Game Patches", click "Download last patches" and then select the game and click at 60 FPS. If you want to play 1080p (which gives you a little FPS reduction, but still very playable) you have to go in the GPU tab (not CPU this time), and set *Resolution Scale (Disable Strict Mode)* to "150%": in this case you can have some upscaling issues, so you have to install another patch (following this link: wiki.rpcs3.net/index.php?title=Persona_5 at the section "Dialog Portraits with Resolution Scaling"). I hope these settings can be usefull. If someone has better settings or other improvements, share it with a comment :)

@@veganlife1710 No doubt windows laptops are better for gaming, but let me add that it's pointless comparing MacBook M1 Air with these laptops: it is not born for gaming. In general buying a MacBook primarily to play games is wrong. I have this laptop because it is so comfortable: amazing battery life, amazing performance even when unplugged, no noise, good display, good keyboard, good performance with the apps I generally use. I can use this laptop everywhere and that's what a real portable PC should be (for a student is too good). These "windows gaming laptops" obviously are better for gaming, but they are super loud (MacBook Air is completely silent) and when unplugged are less performant and the battery capacity is insufficient, so you are basically force to always have an electric socket and the charging cable (at least for what I do with my laptop). The fact that I can even play some good games with decent/good performance in my free time, basically everywhere, without spending other money for another PC is actually great. I will never sell my Mac to pick even a super performant windows laptop simply because I need a portable system and sadly windows laptops today are not really good in terms of portability. This MAC/Windows war jeeeeez is so silly, simply they are intended for different uses and users.

The M1 processor is a powerhouse to be honest, and I am NOWHERE an apple fanboy.
And this is all emulated, too. Remember, the M1 family are ARM CPUs, and RPCS3 currently only compiles for x86_64 (unless something changed within the last few days).
@@MaddTheSane Correct, RPCS3 on macOS has to be run through Rosetta 2 on M1 systems as they aren't x86.

I'm really curious when uncharted 1, 2 and 3 will change their status from Ingame to Playable.
they are beatable with an extreme overclocked intel cpu with TSX.
They will need to somehow optimize RPCS3 to the point that these games can be ran at good frame rates on decent CPU’s. They’re beatable, they just run at bad performance on most CPU’s.

It is hilarious that Sony decides to continue with cloud gaming for playing PS3 titles on the PS5, and yet RPCS3 have managed to finally release a proper macOS emulator for the PS3, while the Windows variant that they work on is already phenomenal....

(I say this bc currently I have a 2019 intel i5 MacBook Pro and it runs well with what I need it to. So it'll be about 4 years until I get a new one and I believe they should have an M3 chip by then lmao. Currently I don't think any game will be playable, so I won't b using this atm. .-.)

Finally, a real use for the apple M1 chip!
Dolphin also preforms excellently on M1 chips. Although Dolphin does have a native ARM build, which helps _immensely_ with performance.

Didn’t Sony say that you couldn’t emulate PS3 games because of how they made it piracy proof, and that’s why you have to use PS Now instead of having backwards compatibility in the PS4?

Nah emulating isn't piracy or illegal, it's legal, what they meant is if you download the ps3 games from a free website then it's piracy, you must dump your own games.

How do you get the playstation games though? can you download them for free or do you have to pay? Can you player multiplayer in any games via PSNOW online (E.g 1 v 1 in Fifa or playing overwatch multiplayer).

Congrats, on the release. I been testing the artefact, will soon test the fps stability after 30 mins, (the artefacts didn't do so well there). Is there any timeline, when to expect it in Universal Binary?
Yep, TTT2 runs much more consistently, and with much lower temps on SoC.

I just wanted to thank the developers for making a version for MacOS! I am just starting with it and I am really excited that it’s even possible. Currently I am working out a problem that prevents me from downloading the game patch and compatibility data, but I’m sure it is just a mater of time and perhaps learning a bit more about the software before it’s working for me. Very grateful for your efforts! It will be fantastic to have a way to preserve my investment in these games!

This is for x86 only, RPCS3 does not compile on ARM.
@@cheedandcheed1592 the fact that the m1 is using a Rosetta translation layer virtualizing x86 application which is also emulating the ps3 is very impressive given the performance and hardware. A real testament to the people working on rpcs3 for making such an efficient emulator.
