Any man that sees a girl get injured and doesn't see red isn't a man - 99% of folk would do the same lad - These videos are lessons in life and if we all conducted ourselves with integrity respect and empathy like you Sam this world would be a better place ! Stephen is such a character ! Great videos !

You seem a fine man yourself it's good to know there's other true decent men in this world, Sam and John are fine screws it's many years since I done time, I was treated with cruelty I'm Irish and was being held under the PTA Act. Yet I remember one screw who treated me as a man I can see his face clearly! Yet I can't remember what the cruel ones looked like. Regards Eire32

The 2 reasons I love your podcast Sam…firstly, my great interest in life is crime and punishment so I’m always interested in hearing from someone who actually has to work with the criminals, and secondly, Stephen is a beautiful dog 😀

Morning Sam....Stephen! Sitting in the sunshine among the buttercups and daisies, the contrast between the vison and the subject matter couldn't have been more 'striking'...no pun intended. I still have occasion to talk to people about fighting and how damaging an event it is, not just in a physical sense but emotionally too. You've done well to put it down and that's where such feelings belong. Lovely start to the day to see you and the lad in the sunshine. Hope you're having a great weekend mate...all the best!

Beautiful Stevie x As for you ‘fighting’ in prison. All I can say is that you are a compassionate human being who anyone can see is great at working with people. You may have to use some muscle, but you are not a ‘fighter’ for the sake of it. x

I have seen it both ways attacks, but when staff use control and restraint techniques does that give staff the right to use more force than necessary.I have had it done to me a few times where during C&R I have been punched, had my head stamped on, and my back jumped on. Is that acceptable I ask that question

Thanks for another video mate. And I know what you mean when I worked at Broadmoor every day on the ward I worked on it always kicked off and had to get hands on but I was never assaulted and did what ever we had to do to sort out the situation but I loved the job and miss it but have moved on to other things now and enjoy my job and looking forward to starting a fresh up north in Knutsford

I've no idea why your videos popped up in my feed. I did thirty two years on secure psychiatric wards. I've never punched anyone in my life, but restraints? Thousands of times... I really can't begin to imagine how many times. Watching you sit in the grass, on a sunny day, reflecting, makes me happy. I retired at fifty, a couple of years ago as a hospital manager. Now I work on a Saturday and sell sausage rolls to smiling customers.
It's good to see people who have lived through decades of daily horror just enjoying life. It feels like living for the first time.

I remember I was in HMP Brixton many many moons ago, I was walking along the twos opposite the cell door was open and a screw was being held by two prisoner's the officer looked directly at me and shouted get help, I really wish I hadn't glance over the landing towards that cell the whole wing was out on association so there was lots of noise the inmates had his arms up in a head lock type of move, the inmates clocked my boat so in their mind's they know me I just ignore the incident carried on with association they { inmates } ended up down the choke the kanga he was a S.O. I did say to him sorry, he ended up with a bruise on his face, but can you see how you can end up in situations by just minding your own business, sometimes trouble finds you.

Hi Sam, Im just wondering, how many staff did you use to get someone in a hold? I used to work on a Challenging Behaviour unit with dementia patients and they had super human strength. Sometimes they'd trash their rooms and then come out with a weapon like a table leg or something like that. It was quite often distraction techniques and interventions from both sides at the same time (someone came in from the left, the other from the right, at the same time). Then whilst they're being restrained or put in holds in my case, the 3rd would disarm the patient. All the staff I used to work with had a blue card or MAPA (Management of Actual or Potential Aggression).

@@RealPorridgePodcast Ahh I thought it would be similar. I remember once there were 5 staff gathered around a resident who had cleaning foam spray, kind of looks like hair spray, brandishing it as a weapon. For 10mins the teamleader was quietly discussing tactics and staff refusing to approach him with it. I eventually had to take the initiative and just surprise him and just take it out his hand quickly before he noticed what had happened. I took the weapon away whilst the other staff de-esculated his temper. Also we had to clear his room out, he had broke pictures, CDs, smashed up CD case, turned his bed over, tore the insides of his pillow. It was just a bomb site. Got that all cleared, made his bed and managed to get him settled and back to bed. Theres times where it had gone the opposite way, Ive had a resident grab and grip my bollocks, punched in the bollocks on several occasions because bucket seats seem to be on a similar level amd made me a bloody target. Ive been backed into a kitchenette with one way out and kicked and punched. Ive had all sorts happen. Tried to give a resident personal care and I got backed into a corner, knocked my glasses off my face. That was investigated because I did injure a resident, I put my hands up to cover my face and that pushed his hands way but over his head, he stumbled back and cracked his head on his foot board. He did go to hospital with a 6 inch gash on top of his head. Lets just say his trigger was he was aquaphobic and he was tished, like elephant piles in his bed sheets, and he had been digging his fingers in it and attacked me with said shitty fingers. Not pleasant and certainly not a good feeling knowing that Id injured a resident. Ive had a tendon donkey kicked from the front to the back of my leg. Absolute agony. All for a bloody milkshake on a 30 minute Fluids allowance, that being this particular resident would constantly knock back milkshakes one after the other, this lady nearly had 1 litre of milshake in just 45 minutes and she wanted more. Now heres a question, have you ever had a Prisoner throw human waste at you?

Hello Sam. You mention duty of care. I spent almost 36 years in the job and duty of care does not exist. Cracking stories and we are actually very much alike. I was never deliberately assaulted as my best weapons were humanity and use of talk.. We all need to realise that there is good and bad on both sides of the line. Yes, I have dealt with some very evil and downright nasty individuals, especially in the Dispersal system but, some very sad cases especially people with mental health issues. Keep `em coming Sam, all the best.

The prison and judicial system has been for decades deliberately neglected / understaffed / underfunded as with many public services past and present with the auspice that the private sector can manage it better when in most cases this is not true the very people who have the knowledge and expertise to improve the system for everyone concerned are never consulted or recognised home office and the justice department spin new ill thought out populist proposals with regards to these two departments to the news media in the hope it will appease the publics thirst for vengeance creating a falsehood which is damaging to all personnel and prisoners concerned and to implement these proposals on existing budgets not new money.

the alterntive is to let a prisoner do anything ? if the prisoner can beat one guard do you really expect the althorities to say well done chap go ahead and cause mayhem because you won a fair fight ? what kind of logic is that ? if a guy attacks your mum and beats up the first guy that intervenes do you expect another 4 guys to do nothing cuz he can beat any one of them up ? this idiotic code of shivelry you have about 1 on 1 doesnt apply in situations like this.
