Not sure how many people will see this, but something you didn't mention about the Adept guard for Lance, Gunlance, and Charge Blade that I think is somewhat helpful. After a successful Adept guard, not only can you do the standard counterattack or other Adept actions, you can actually press the guard button again to instantaneously do ANOTHER Adept guard. While it isn't a huge window to do so, this can be helpful for dealing with monsters that attack multiple times in quick succession, such as Valstrax's double wing thrust, though I discovered it myself while dealing with the wind pressure off of Rathalos's flying charge. Again, no clue how many people will see this, but I hope more people discover this mechanic because it makes Adept guarding that much cooler.
Aerial style lance is stupid good. He never mentions that you can cancel your third thrust's end lag into aerial dodge, allowing you to jump over the monster and do an aerial attack with mounting damage that also leads back into your triple thrust. It's an infinite combo that has crazy good repositioning.
Lance is one of the few weapons in this game that feels like it has to make huge sacrifices for each style. Like SnS, for example, hardly gives up anything for any of the styles. The guns pretty much give up nothing for Adept and Valor. Then you have lance, where you have to give up bread n' butter skills like the counter, which pretty much changes the entire approach of the weapon. It's also the only weapon where they changed the combo for the guild style, at least to my knowledge. I don't know why they treat the lance so differently from everything else.
I really like when you can hear the younger GaijinHunter at like 10:00 and then he passes the mike to his older brother, HuntingGaijin for the changes.
I spent a long while trying to beat Valstrax in the Demo with Valor GS and Aerial CB to no avail. I watched this vid and managed to down him with Striker Lance after the better part of an afternoon. Thank you so much for making such amazing guides
Demon Zero I somehow managed to kill the demo Valstrax in 13:39 min with guild IG, then tried Valor DB and couldn’t even kill him in time... At least in the demo some weapons are just way worse than others ( note I was relentless with those Valor DB, it is possible to kill Valstrax with them but very hard ) In the full game I don’t know what the tierlist looks like, I’ve only played Valor IG so far...
These guides and the demo are the only thing holding me over until MHGU finally releases, thank you Gaijin Hunter!! I probably would have died of anticipation otherwise haha
Love these guides man! I just started streaming about 5 months ago, already affiliate after my first month, and this is my next BIG game to play! I’m super stoked!
Your guides are great, but all of your Lance and Gunlance guides fail to mention a mechanic unique to them among all the melee weapons: Both types of lances will switch between doing Impact and Cutting damage depending on whichever the body part you hit is weakest to, the sparks you'll sometimes see shoot out of the impact point indicate that the lance used impact damage instead of cutting damage. This is pretty important since it means lancers can focus on more of a monster than any other weapon in the game. Also the strong poke has super armor iirc (which is something lancers have sorely needed in previous generations) but it's been awhile since I'd played MHG so I might be remembering wrong.
That's technically true, except there is a 0.72x multiplier on the impact hitzone before determining which is higher, and for the purpose of damage. In other words, let's say hypothetically that a monster has 35 and 45 cutting and impact on its body, and 35 and 50 on its head. For the purpose of calculating lance damage, we would multiply the impact hitzones (45 and 50) by .72. For the body, that means a 32.4 hitzone- Lower than 35, so it gets thrown away and the lance still defaults to just dealing cutting. For the head, that's a 36 hitzone- Just high enough to beat out the cutting hitzone, so it calculates it based on the MODIFIED impact value, meaning it gets treated as a 36 hitzone. Higher, but probably not what most people are expecting when they hear the myth (because it might as well be a myth) that lance deals impact damage if the impact zone is higher. One more HUGE problem- Hitzones where impact is more than 1.39x cutting are virtually nonexistent in modern Monster Hunter. In fact, I can't think of or find a single example. Everything above is therefore an academic issue- Past FU, the mechanic basically doesn't exist, and lances are just cutting. Also pretty sure gunlance NEVER had the "piercing" damage type and were always pure cutting, so there's that.
@@vitriolicAmaranth ^This. I think the main reason this misconception keeps spreading is due to how a lot of players don't use more than one or two weapons and don't actually know the hitzone values themselves. The easiest way to prove that this is true in concept if not in numbers is to trying hitting a barroth's head using a lance with green sharpness and then do the same with any impact weapon. I'm also pretty sure those sparks are actually there to show when you're hitting a spot with 45% or more weakness.
as a lance user i welcome myself. Truth is, I played all weapons especially GS the most before I touched the lance. I thought that it was too slow and clunky and didn't do very well. When i used it, I realized that this is the weapon for me. I like to stick close to the monster, and so guarding and hitting feels so nice LANCE IS MY FAVORITE

But I'm still unsure and feel like other Styles look great as well. Capcom gave me too much freedom of choice with this one ._."
I love aerial lance being able to run around and close distance with the charge and be super precise with my jumping hits is honestly perfect (also those multihits are too good), plus I have defense for when I get knocked out of the air, I also really enjoy striker, as expected, but valor is kinda interesting too.
thanks for this vid, i am now convinced i have to try the Lance in Gen Ult! i usually like Gunlance, Switch Axe and Insect Glaive with a bit of Charge Blade on the side, and sometimes using Bowguns (both types)
Played XX but never used lance in it, after mainly using it in world and looking to use it some in MHGU guess I gotta go Striker style since it seems like what I am used to. Lot of good info here, thanks for the reupload! Also, man this weapon needs more respect, it's the ultimate tool for learning new monsters IMO since you can kinda chill and see what they're doing with your insane shield along with gunlance to some extent but you're less mobile. Been playing World online a good deal and never seen anyone else even trying it. They rate it as one of the hardest weapons to use in the game at the beginning, but it makes no sense at all to me.
They basically made any style but Striker very sub-optimal. Most monsters, especially in the end game, arent going to give you enough time to pull off that strong thrust.
I was playing the game with this video in the background, and when he put on that abrupt music for the evade steps, I looked at it, thinking "Really? Another freaking ad?", only to find out he was making a funny. Good bait, gaijinhunter. Got me like a Deviljho and raw meat.
They absolutely looked to Dragon's Dogma for that new Hunter Art. The Mystic Knight vocation had a magick shield skill called "Holy Grace" that healed you when you blocked. Of course, in this case it doesn't matter if you time your block perfectly but still. It's good to see!
Gonna give the lance a go later on the demo. See if I can graduate from Macao to Barioth level at least since Im super bad as a lancer. Gunlance next, please~ I really wanna see if Im missing any cool moves in Valor style
For Arial style that forward hop does that have blocking capabilities or no? Cause the animation looks like it does but I wasn't sure. And as someone who's recently discovered my love for lance this would give me some intresting set ideas.
Be careful, a lot of blademaster weapons like the Lance tend to dislike Longsword-users due to constant tripping caused by them when they aren't careful. Hopefully you won't grow to hate your main as you branch out. :P
I was kinda in the same boat after seeing brave styles, but brave LS got boring for me pretty quickly in XX. Brave DB turned out to be just the right balance (for me personally) between flashy gimmicks that made the game easier, and classic MH gameplay.
So I played generations as a longsword, switchaxe, and insect glaive guy awhile back. I wanted to try something new so I picked up the lance. I wanted something I could guard with because the monsters in gen aggroed me to no end with my friends. No joke I'm known in other game groups that also have them in it for the unending aggro. Should I be using the lance or should I drop it and what style should I use as essentially I'm real rusty newbie. I was hunter rank 7 and got a few sets of weapons to max rank if that helps. Also looking for some new friends to play with.
Hey there! I know it's kind of late already, but I hope I might still get a reply from somebody. I'm not really an expert in terms of lancing, so sorry if that question sounds a little bit pathetic, but is the Striker Style only meant for Evade Lancing? Can I use it for Guard Lancing as well or should I focus on Bushido Style then? I really like the one-two-three playstyle and I dislike the stronger third thrust. Any advice would be much appreciated!
I think one thing that isn't said about striker lance is that it (from what I've seen) it cannot counter upwards or is significantly lesser of a chance for it to happen while guild lance is even better for guard lance because its able to counter after the third poke and it can counter upwards edit:my lance just didn't want to counter upwards still hardly does it for me
Unrelated but is there any news on upcoming dlc for MHGen Ultimate? Specifically, all the anime-related dlc packs such as the Hunter X Hunter one. I thought about changing my character's gender to female (just because :p) but if that dlc is coming to Ultimate soon, then I might not change gender assuming that the Gon armor is gender exclusive for males.
Tried Valor Lance on the demo today, I honestly didn't like it at all. I don't really get it. Why would I lose so much for this little shield bash when other styles pack the same or at least similar functionality in generally much easier ways? Lance also isn't really that great at entering Valor Mode to begin with, it's a little slow and clunky in attempting that. It makes the Lance feel a lot more unwieldy than normal. Granted, I'm not much of a Lancer to begin with (I'm a Gunlancer, fittingly enough), so perhaps this combination simply isn't for me. Still, when I do play lance, I'll probably use a different style. And speaking of Gunlance, since that'll come tomorrow, I'm curious to hear what you think of it, especially since you're not really known to be much of a Gunlancer yourself. I've tried Valor Gunlance in the demo and it's just incredible. I know Gunlance has had a bit of a performance issue in 4U and Generations (though the added arts and styles in Generations did help a bunch already), and the heat gauge continues to be divisive, but man. I have played a bunch of Valor Gunlance in the demo, and it is absolutely incredible. I'll save the in-depth gushing for that video, but this style is giving me the confidence to truly call Gunlance my main weapon again. I feel like there's no monster that's out of reach for this weapon anymore, especially after getting a sub-15 mins on the demo Valstrax with it, which I felt was pretty good, especially considering I still made some blunders and carted twice. And playing that with all the added options of the full game is gonna be so very nice as well.
Laggalot101 I think the main draw of that valor shield bash-counter thing is that it gives you an infinite attack loop that lets you stay in one place. Poke-poke-bash repeat. Poke-poke-poke for big openings. I’m still not a fan of it though. Much less fun then the gunlance valor style.
Is the 3rd poke thing at least better than than the regular striker for elemental and status lance ? Or is the lance too slow anyway to consider this option
Better for status, element I guess is okay, but at that point if you're really dependent on multiple hits for an element you might as well just get high off of Dash juice and do the Lance charge.
I'm still sad that Striker Style loses the charge jump thrust. Having ledge-less mounting options is a great point for the Lance. I still use Striker because I really like using all three arts, but there's that little jump-happy part missing haha. Oh well, still my favorite weapon in every MH game.
unstylish players: "losing the backswipe on striker style isn't a big deal, nobody ever used it anyway" stylish players: ruclips.net/video/4yUFhczjwUw/видео.html
I really want to start using the lance, but there's a couple of issues that I have with it that I can't figure out. I'm having a hard time deciding when to block. I don't often use weapons with blocking options, but with the lance having the strongest shield I think it's something I should incorporate, but when I want to put the shield down it takes a long time before I can do anything else. Also I'm not sure how I should be moving around with it. Like when the monster moves should I put the lance away, or should I do the charge to close the distance? Can any lance experts help?
ya boi you wanna stick near the monsters face either to the side or under the monster. It's pretty important being able to read a monster so you can always guard their attack and if possible counterattack with the counter strike by holding block and either pressing circle of holding it. Holding it will prepare for a monster and counterattack but if you press it it will just do a quick strong upward thrust. A good gap closer is the guard advance which will block attacks with r2 triangle and then press circle which will jump forward and attack 3 times or triangle will swing your shield which does stun damage but leave you open an is hard to hit. The dash attack is really up to you. Half the people say not to use it much but I use it pretty often. It's great to use to get across the map quickly, dodge strong attacks, or does continuous damage while you run into as monster so it can be used to constantly whittle away their health. And lastly it's great for mounting. I usually get at least 2 mounts a monster but I try not to overdo it and only jump attack when I limited opening because you'll be putting out a lot less damage if you're just running around
To this day, I'm not sure when the Adept Guard actually is supposed to trigger, and I have down Adept evades and beaten the Fry Pan in Generations. It's just such a weird motion...
It's the same timing window as the adept evade. For visual reference, you see when the character swing his shield around twice before a guard? The first half of the first swing is your perfect guarding window.
Thrusting is so satisfying and not the dirty kind. :) I just started using the lance in world and now I'm using it as well in 4U and I will use it in GenU. #thrustmastersunite
It’s just B when doing that running dash move. Make sure which style you are using, the ability to jump is removed for some hunter styles, try guild to see how it works
I’m not sure what to tell you. R+X+A I believe does the running dash and if you are running for over a second or so, forward input on the analog stick and pressing B will make you jump. Make sure again that the style you have equipped didn’t remove that move, guild style has it
Not sure how many people will see this, but something you didn't mention about the Adept guard for Lance, Gunlance, and Charge Blade that I think is somewhat helpful. After a successful Adept guard, not only can you do the standard counterattack or other Adept actions, you can actually press the guard button again to instantaneously do ANOTHER Adept guard. especially double tapping guard on a stomp that also has a tremor. So good
Exactly, in some ways Adept guarding is more versatile than Adept dodging and gives you a lot more options to protect yourself.
in fact, parrying duramboros tail spin is funnier than it should be ^-^
I figured this out by accident, specifically on magala's linear fireblast, and felt like a badass blocking 3 hits in a row. such a cool mechanic
You can actually even do it for Glavenus double tail slam. Just soloed Hellblade I with early high rank gear, the double tap made it so much easier!

Guard lancing doesn't really work with Adept anyway since you can't insert the adept guard inbetween your pokes.
Striker's just so fun, with it's super strong lance charge, and those really nice arts.

Better for status, element I guess is okay, but at that point if you're really dependent on multiple hits for an element you might as well just get high off of Dash juice and do the Lance charge.
that cat at 6:50 ish had me really confused love that backseat commentary though
I'm still sad that Striker Style loses the charge jump thrust. Having ledge-less mounting options is a great point for the Lance. I still use Striker because I really like using all three arts, but there's that little jump-happy part missing haha. Oh well, still my favorite weapon in every MH game.
unstylish players: "losing the backswipe on striker style isn't a big deal, nobody ever used it anyway"

Thank you so much for the video it will def help me to become a pro.
Oh my gosh that mini dance montage 😂
Great video. Will you be doing a tutorial on how to transfer save data from gen to GenU?
I covered it in my stream actually!
gaijin hunter awesome! Did you post it to RUclips or is it on twitch?
This is for mhgu on switch?
Gaijin, does the Guild Style fully charge counter on a strong attack give 3 hits of 50 MV?
Bugu Sparkle just one thing, the R2 triangle + circle combo isnt available on MHGU as it was only implemented on MHW.
2:09 best part 👣
Nice god guide
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaassssssssssssss. Gaijuns back
To this day, I'm not sure when the Adept Guard actually is supposed to trigger, and I have down Adept evades and beaten the Fry Pan in Generations. It's just such a weird motion...
It's the same timing window as the adept evade. For visual reference, you see when the character swing his shield around twice before a guard? The first half of the first swing is your perfect guarding window.
I do gunlance, but am curious about other weapons.
Great video, thanks buddy.
You're so awesome and you're my idol
Awesome guide dude
Any tips for guard lancing?
What armor set is that at 5:37 it looks really nice
Can teammates, such as a party GS-user, still trigger the bonus damage from Guard Rage?
Was the final thrust of the charge attack nerfed in mhgu?
Could somebody explain me, why I can't Counter? I'm pressing R, A and then I hold R, but nothing happens...
Don't all shield attacks have mind's eye?
That change to guild is so nice.
So is Adept Style not viable for Lances?
So is striker or Bushido better?
Is the striker lance motion value still 70 for the charge attack or has it been nerfed
Lowkey Simba i’ve heard it’s 67 now. So nerfed, but not enough to matter.
With valor, it makes the dash more of an offensive move than a gap closer
Phone audio went to shit. So now i really on captions. And boy it's fun listi.... Reading the captions say "Agent Hunter" instead of gaijin hunter.
I CANT MAIN ALL THESE WEAPONS! or can i? Thanks for the info as usual gaijin.(also why you abuse narga so much XD)
I hope you will be doing another prowler guide, this is the only reason I will be buying MHGU!
Anyone else come here to see how badly they massacred Lance in sunbreak?
Wdym? Lance is godly in Sunbreak.
Is the third strong thrust useless?
Gaijin hunter you forgot to mention that Striker Lances Finishing poke after charging got nerfed only doing 67 instead of 70
wonder if the pro controller would be better for this game
Thrusting is so satisfying and not the dirty kind. :)
I just started using the lance in world and now I'm using it as well in 4U and I will use it in GenU. #thrustmastersunite
I don’t know if this is true but in the demo I felt like lance had the quickest valor sheath after an attack
Wild Ice lance has always been a really fast weapon to put away so I wouldn’t be surprised
Anyone know how farm gore magala nyctgem? I need it to make the shaguru magala greatsword.
Great video, as normal! :)
How to lance charge ?
Finallyyyy!!!
Time to Lance n' Prance!
Simple yet effective
Gaijin do I get this on launch day
1:15 Heh, you said do do
How do you do the jump??? I can't do it for some reason :(((
It’s just B when doing that running dash move. Make sure which style you are using, the ability to jump is removed for some hunter styles, try guild to see how it works
@@gaijinhunter I'm still confused, I already did what you said in your video but I just can't do it ig
I’m not sure what to tell you. R+X+A I believe does the running dash and if you are running for over a second or so, forward input on the analog stick and pressing B will make you jump. Make sure again that the style you have equipped didn’t remove that move, guild style has it
At the end of the video you say that Adept style is the most safe, but you never actually talked about Adept style..?
mattismen 7:06 Bushido style is adept style, just the JP name of it
