  • Today I am sharing everything I am decluttering this month and my reasons why. I like to call it Letting Go! These items have been collected over the last few months so you might have seen them in some of my videos, but I held onto them for 2 reasons. no.1 I could talk about my reasons for getting rid of them to you (a lot of people have commented that this helps them to let go of more as well). no.2 the second-hand store I donate to is kinda far from where we live so I only drop stuff off once in a while to save on gas and time.
    I hope you find some inspiration in this video and thank you so much for being part of my community!

    I declutterd over 1000 items in 2023, and I'm still finding things to declutter. I am so much happier being able to use my living room instead of seeing it as a storage unit! I'm working on crochet projects that had gotten buried in the piles. I have a functioning desk area. Maintaining my space is easy breezy.

    I've decluttered the last 4 years in a row for a big yard sales. Just last week, I got rid of window unit air conditioner box with about 40 more items. I'm not quite as good as you but I'm getting there. The older I get, the less I want in my house. My husband and I are 65 years old and either I've got to do it and declutter now or my kids one day will have to get rid of all my junk when were dead and gone. I rather go ahead and do it for them!

    My sons are decluttering books and clothes, my daughter decluttered her dresser clothes and now she's working in her closet. I share this because they did it on their own and I can see how my decluttering is carrying over to encouraging them to do the same. Thank You for being an example, Shannon. It's helping so many families😊 congratulations 100k

    Hi Shannon, I'm 63 and currently decluttering my home. My biggest worry was the thousands of photographs we had. I did each of my daughters an album from birth to 21st birthday year's ago. But didnt know what to do with the rest. I looked online for storage ideas and found the solution! You can buy a plastic case that holds 16 smaller cases that hold 100 6"x4" each...thats 1600 photos !! I purchased 3 in total. Then i whittled down all the photos.Kept some holiday snaps but not many that are just scenery. My daughters said they would just throw those away anyway. So now they can go through the cases when I'm gone and pick out what they want instead of ruining albums!
    My other problem is letters i kept,especially ones to and from my husband when he was in the army in 70s/80s. We were only married 10 days before he went to the Falklands so we wrote every day for 5 months! Letters aren't really sent any more so perhaps i should keep?! Its a dilemma! Any suggestions?

    • @shannontorrens1
      @shannontorrens1  2 дня назад +1

      You could always keep the letters in a box just for yourself marked as a sentimental box. That's probably what I would do. It might be fun to read the letters to your grandkids one day. =)

    I almost never read any paper books anymore and rarely do I read ebooks on my ebook reader because my attention span sadly has decreased quite a bit over the years. I mostly read online (science articles etc.).
    That said, I own a small handfull of books that I re-read sometimes - yes, I know how they end, but there are these rare treasures that "grow" with you and you always find something new in them with each re-read. My favorite book (Paradise Galore by William Woodruff) I read for the first time when I was 10, which is almost 33 years ago and I still adore it. It has so many more layers of meaning to me now.
    Aside from these very few favorites I have some non-fiction books which I go through every few years to see if I could donate them. All of my books fit in a medium sized bin that doesn't take up much space and this way they won't get dusty either 🙂
    All in all I'm in maintaining mode now which feels awesome 😊

    Our local LifePath Mission store sells books for $1. I buy books there, read them and then re-donate the books! This is where I donate all of my declutter items. Also, there are certain books that I do read again. I also keep biographies and classic books.

    I have used a walking cane for many years. When I worked I had a cane to go with every outfit. And displayed them in an umbrella stand by the front door. When I retired I gave most of them away but kept three. I am getting rid of two and only keeping the original one I got in 1997. It is an ebony stick with a silver greyhounds head as the handle and is very pretty. I can only use one at a time so getting rid of the others is good.

    I have three small bookcases of books, because I love reading and I reread a lot. But I am much more ruthless now about which books I keep - I used to have 9 bookcases! For the past two years, I've rated and reviewed everything I've read on Goodreads, and if it's less than 4 stars, I don't keep it. It's made it much easier for me to cut down. I'd quite like to get down to two bookcases, but I don't think I'd ever want less - I ran out of reading material during Covid, when all the libraries and charity shops were closed, and it was miserable!

  • @saritarossi3939
    @saritarossi3939 27 дней назад +2

    I'm 100 percent the same way about books. Once read, they are gone, whether it's to a little library (because there is one convenient to me) or a friend, but I'm not at all opposed to donations. I just like to move onto something new. Once I do get all my books read that I own, it's the library for me.

    I’ve finally decided to sort out my loft; and it’s so bad I didn’t know where to start. So I’ve decided to do the konmari method.
    Yes it’s been brutal and I’m only on the clothes. Have not started on paper and books yet. When I say brutal I’m not exaggerating.
    But what I’ve learned ; is not the fear of letting it go. It’s now the fear of getting myself in that state again.
    I’ve got rid of countless 70 litre sacks and still have coats and shoes to declutter.
    I’ve just ordered a new summer sweatshirt ; I’m already thinking about the summer jumper I will let go. Finally I think my mindset has changed x

    Inspiration! I'm changing out my seasonal clothes today. I hope I can find a few to let go, but I am also trying to shop for clothes only out of necessity and have pared down my wardrobe over the last couple of years.. So far in the first 4 months of the year I've bought a pair of sneakers to replace an ancient pair (really, really old!) and a spring sweater as I didn't have one and we had real spring this year in New England--too warm for a coat, too cold to go without something. That's probably a personal best when it comes to not shopping!

    That said, as for me... I just have a 'yes - no' gut feel about keeping items. If my gut says "No," the item goes straight into the trash cart. None of that donating crap. Get any pain of loss over quickly and move on. This makes my decluttering simple.

      I can understand this way of decluttering too. Sometimes it's just too much work to figure out where something will go. I always feel bad throwing something away but part of me knows that half of what I donate is probably going in the trash anyways.

    Thanks for pointing out that if it’s broken don’t donate. I personally wouldn’t donate a clothing item that needs a little fixing but the type of clothing drive the school is doing clothes that aren’t wearable usually get recycled

      Oh yeah the things that are broken just go in the trash or get recycled if possible. The kids clothing drive is a little different because they said they want everything including items that aren't perfect.

    I am the same way with books if I read them I pass them to my sister then she passes them to our little sister next then they pass them back to me and I go to a trade book store and trade them for a few more books. Children’s book I read and reread to my 3 granddaughters. So I have little tubs of books and as the girls get to 3-4 grade books will be traded.

      That is great you have sisters to pass your books to. Kids books are the one type that we also keep because they like to read the same stories over and over. =)

    I prefer the 2 handle pots and pans instead of the long handle pots and pans.

      I did say 14, but I think I was referring to only my clothing items. When I edited the video I did catch that moment that seemed a little confusing.

      Yes, we do go to the library too. Our library doesn't take books though. They are usually selling a ton.

    Revere Ware is pronounced like Paul Revere's name. So disappointing that it is warped. Not common as this is a fabulous brand since 1939.

    Some of the things you don’t wear look like they are just not a color that suits your coloring. Maybe that’s why you tend to not wear them?

    Congratulations to 100k subscribers .🏆 So well deserved. 🩷 Makes sense that you feel uncomfortable in the curry colored sweater. I think that you are a summer type just like me. Whenever I wore the autumn colors like curry, orange or peach people would ask me if I had the flu. 🤧
