  • I am wading with the Fishpond Thunderhead Lumbar Pack and using Tacky Boxes. Here are some links below to what I'm using. A well organized pack keeps you mobile and spontaneous.
    Fishpond Lumbar Thunderhead Pack - I have the divider system as well that is an optional upgrade. Love this system! A full review is available on this product page:
    redsflyfishing.com/products/f...
    Tacky Original Fly Boxes - I use (3) of these in my wade fishing pack. I have one for my beadhead nymphs, stonefly nymphs, and my mico streamers/leeches.
    redsflyfishing.com/products/t...
    Tacky River Mag - I use (1) of these for all my itty bitty nymphs. The magnet is crazy good! You'll love it. No more dropping small flies on the gravel bar.
    redsflyfishing.com/products/t...
    Tacky Pescador Fly Boxes - I use (2) of these, in different colors. I have one for my terrestrials/dry flies and one for my larger streamers.

    I use Tacky fly boxes also. Take a strip of green masking tape , put it on the up end of the box and mark it as to content, also have one marked new where I put only newest flies so they don’t get mixed in with my others.

    Great clasp. Rigid interior shelves. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxBrJOMRANMI82dPOK0qoDtHhP-JpbErUg Yeah the shelves sometimes get misaligned with their supports in the lid if you don't have the lid fully flat, or you twist the shelves as you're pulling them out, but pretty much a non issue; just reseat and you're fine. Some spools of thread are a little too big and cause the shelves to not close all the way, however with the clasp you can still get the lid locked if the shelves aren't completely collapsed without breaking things ... so far.

    Interesting to see how different people organize. I was fortunate enough to have OtterBox as a client when they fist started and at that time they made fly boxes and I have like 20 of them . I mark them on either end so when I look in whatever bag I’m using I can immediately see what box it is and grab it . I also put my name and phone number on the box so if someone finds it they can call or they know who tied them .I have tried the compartment boxes with varying success I like them for my small flies also but you have to be careful because sometimes you open the lid and they can fall out . Articulated streamers which I fish a lot I use Plan D boxes there is nothing better for those type flies. Like you I have a garage wall full of packs , sling , waste, chest , vest etc . It usually comes down to where and what I’m fishing on what pack I bring . Thanks for sharing

    The River Mag box is heavy, but it’s fantastic for small flies! I keep all of my midge, tiny emergers, BWOs etc in one. Can’t see going back to trying to pick out a size 20 out of individual slot after using a magnetic box.

    • @redsflyshop
      @redsflyshop  Год назад

      They are heavy. No doubt, Tacky in general but damn they are nice boxes. With expensive flies I like to make sure I don't lose any fumbling around on the shore.

    I’m a relative noob to fly fishing in general, but specifically to euro nymphing. I love your videos; they’re most helpful getting me on the right track. You’ve mentioned that you routinely use a euro rod to not only fish nymphs, but dries, dry droppers and even streamers. Do you carry a spare reel with standard line and leaders to do this, or can it be done with a mono rig?

    You used to wade with the orange Thunderhead sling. How would you compare the 2? I am debating between the lumbar and sling.

    Regarding bag weight, do you need to use the shoulder strap with the Thunderhead or is the waist strap sufficient?

    • @redsflyshop
      @redsflyshop  Год назад +1

      My boxes are pretty heavy the foam in the Tacky Boxes weighs quite a bit, so I prefer the shoulder strap. However, if its just a box or two of dry flies I love running just the waist and actually sub it as my wading belt making the system more comfortable. I cinch down the waist, and ditch my regular belt.

    Your Tacky box organizer; is that a segmented item made from elastic?

      It's a rigid plastic with velcro to organize all the spacers. Excellent addition to the product.

    "There's more bullshit in fly fishing than a Kansas stockyard"
    These immortal words uttered by a fly fishing legend never rang more true. For the hundreds of dollars spent on severely overpriced brands like Fishpond, Tacky, Orvis etc... you could have sorted yourself out a weeks vacation or two or bought a few (overpriced) Hardy's youve had your eyes on.
    Its amusing watching fly guys loading up with pack bags that have ten different fly boxes, lugging the newest and most expensive gear down to their spots with go pros and all... yet here I am outfishing these types on a daily basis in my fuckin khakis with one fly box, nippers (toe nail clippers, try to cope), sunglasses and a few rolls of tippet. Go figure huh,,,
    When youve fly fished for 30+ years you sort this out on your own. Just look at us older guys out there, we are certainly not humping suitcases of gear when we fish.
    Keep it simple and keep your money longer.
