    The first time that I went fly fishing was at Deckers on the South Platte River. I didn’t know WTF I was doing. I had a backpack, hip back, and chest pack. They were all stuffed to the gills with all kinds of fly fishing stuff, Renzetti Fly Vise, clothing, etc. I looked like the Pilsbury Dough Boy waddling along under the weight of all that stuff. That stuff was bulky and heavy. If I had fallen in the river, the weight of all that stuff when it got wet would have pinned me to the bottom of the river and I would be watching fly fishing videos in heaven right now. I appreciate Joe’s insights into packing limited essential gear.

    Nice pack and gear organization. It takes years for regular guys to accumulate the right gear to be so highly organized and equipped. Love the wader bag and backpack combo, it works. I’m looking at submersible packs right now to upgrade my kit. Always enjoy your content Joe, thanks for sharing with us.

      Thanks Tom, appreciate the good vibes. I'm often still a mess but occasionally at the end of a trip find my stride with the right gear.

    The r8 10’ 6 wt with the Sage Arbor xl 7/8 is an awesome rig. This reel balances the rod really well, in my opinion. I bought the reel and rod from Reds and their shipping to the eastern USA always amazes me. I always receive my orders from Reds Fly Shop very quickly. Thanks!!!!

      Can I ask you what lines your fishing with your 10ft 6wt r8 as I have recently purchased but not fished it yet. Is it versatile enough to fish dries on big lakes

      Glad you enjoyed it, that was the idea. Patagonia is great, but it's just another fishery and no "better" than anyone's backyard. Fishing is fishing no matter where you are.

    Thanks for the tips mate. I watched a few of your videos. I’m 30 years old now been fly fishing and camping out in the mountains of Europe with dad and friends since I was 5 - 6. I will have to say, and this is not aimed at yourself at all, but sort of everyone in this industry, I just have a feeling you’re reasonable enough to see my point, but the whole backpack game, bottle holders, guys carrying up to 4 rigged up rods at the same time, not only does it look ridiculous, and I do mean ridiculous mate, but it’s so cumbersome and everyone’s looking cackhanded as anything? Fishing imo is generally a pursuit of a wild fish, a very simply game of outsmarting the fish in its own environment the best we can and enjoying the process whilst doing so. But with all the marketing BS the past 20 years of “you need fast, extra fast, ultra fast rods, and you need these reels that have sealed drag systems and are made out of aircraft grade aluminium, and this fly line as flies better through the guides” - like, when you actually think about it right, I do get spending money on gear that keeps you dry, warm and comfortable, it will enable you to stay out for longer and be safe doing so. But spending gut wrenching amounts of money on a fly reel that has 70% less moving parts then a say Shimano Stella or any spinning reel for arguments sake, but costing near enough the same, even more in some instances, to pull out and fight fish between 0.5kg to 7 - 8 kg IF WE ARE SUPER LUCKY! I mean come on man?
    Also the fast fly rods nowadays, all they do is fuck up light tippets and reduce ability to tire fish out and fight it accordingly, to have fun, and then guys are fishing with guides and guides are netting the F-ing fish like 10m away from the angler (is that even catching), the whole game of advertising and marketing bs has gotten to you all?
    Cortland 444 has literally been around forever, lasts 5 seasons and up, perfect fly line, but no Rio is faster and costs double but lasts a season ? What bro?! 😂 I genuinely feel like we’re all responsible for keeping this hobby and sport alive but I’m equally of the thought that we also need to stop being dummy’s and excuse the pun, but, stop getting hooked on every bit of info a manufacturer of something fishing related releases. As we are the ones supporting their dumb ideas though purchases fuels by nothing other then oh it says it’s good on the packet it must be true…Being an engineer, and looking at many things with an engineering mindset - most of it is literally absolute and utter BS!
    For instance the technique some
    G Loomis rods are made of now, Shimano has been doing with their normal spinning rods for decades, even some of their old model fly rods, it’s not new tech, it’s just sold to you as new. Do some research. Gotta smarten up and keep it simple boys and girls 👌 I mean this with utmost respect to you all but I do feel it needs to be said as this industry is imo spiralling out of f-ing control thanks to marketing and utter misinformation. Fish don’t know what rod you fish on, it don’t know that you’re using a £700 Abel Reel, all it sees is your tippet and fly. Just chill. If you have a 5 weight medium action rod, perfect for dries on medium rivers, can become a very good nymph rod, can become a very good streamer rod - just learn to use it in those configurations stop thinking you need stuff you don’t and enjoy fishing.
    Rant over, I hope this actually reaches you pal, maybe some of your followers and viewers too. Take care and tight lines.

      I love rants, keep 'em coming. You're assuming we think fine fly gear is all about the trout, while we know damn good and well it's mostly for us. Like having a cool reel is like a nice watch, what's wrong with that? There are TONS of low budget options. Sometimes people just like to have nice stuff and if we're willing to spend a little more on fly gear and a little less on our car, tv, newest iphone, or name your expense. I personally like having top end fly gear. Everybody spends differently but am under no illusion that a rod that is 2X the price catches 2X the fish ahahahah. That's a ridiculous idea. Thanks for the write up, genuinely do appreciate it.

      @ thanks for the reply man, and a logical reply at that. I do now see it from that perspective too. You’re not wrong and I guess of all the bad money can buy, fishing gear is probably not such a bad choice after all. Tight lines and clear waters 👍

    How often did you use your carbon jacket? Looking for something to complement my insulated puff piece. I don’t know if it’s comfy/breathable to wear even when not in a downpour or if it’s really only used for heavy rain. I have been soaked a few times in my insulated puff piece and don’t want that to happen again

    • @redsflyshop
      @redsflyshop  Месяц назад

      I carry it a lot, it's a great piece and packs down super small. It's very breathable and not too stuffy. I like it enough that when my son borrowed it and left it at his Rubgy match (was using it as a warmup jacket) I turned around and bought one the next day after we lost it. Oh I was mad ahahah, he could have taken any other jacket hahahahah! Kids.

    How often do you wear your Carbon jacket? Is it worth upgrading from a fishing rain jacket I have had for last 10 years or so. Is it also a windbreaker for windy days but aren’t cold but just overcast and blustery making for a colder windchill.

    • @redsflyshop
      @redsflyshop  11 дней назад

      I wear it as a windbreaker most of the time, good for short rain spats and it shakes dry easily.

    Sweet setup! Is that r8 a 9’ or 10’? What are some other 6 wt rods you would recommend for this type of fishing at a slightly lower price point? I’ve been thinking about pulling the trigger on a 6 wt Sonic. Thanks!

    • @redsflyshop
      @redsflyshop  8 месяцев назад

      That is the 9' rod, they are so much fishier with dry flies and far more accurate than a 10' rod. Regarding other rods, the SONIC is outstanding. If that's in your target price range, it's super. We do throw in a free line with Sage SONIC rods here at Red's just FYI! redsflyfishing.com/products/sage-sonic-fly-rods-fast-action

    so many moving off Simms to Skwala...is that marketing and promotion or really a better product?

    • @tommyboy0379
      @tommyboy0379 9 месяцев назад +2

      Its a lot of marketing. Skwala is made overseas but charges same as Simms pricing. Ill stick with Simms and keep my money here. If yourgoing overseas to get third world manufacturing costs then i want to pay third world retail

    • @redsflyshop
      @redsflyshop  9 месяцев назад +1

      I jumped on Skwala due to fit and the fact I like to test new products that hit the market, I feel like that's part of my job! I'm super happy with my Skwala waders so far. Extremely breathable, and I'm bone-dry in all (3) sets.

    • @redsflyshop
      @redsflyshop  3 месяца назад

      Well that's why we have choices, my R8's have been extremely reliable so I can't say I've had to test it yet but the good news is they will always build a custom section to match my rod for years to come so there are definitely tradeoffs.

    • @SeamusMcFitz-jz9if
      @SeamusMcFitz-jz9if 3 месяца назад

      @redsflyshop so, my point is: When you need to rely on the warranty, it's better to go with another brand like Orvis.
      The Sage warranty requires you to pay $200 upfront for fix/replacement. You forgot to mention that.

    • @patrickm12345
      @patrickm12345 3 месяца назад

      @@SeamusMcFitz-jz9if It depends on what Sage rod you’re having repaired. “Legacy” models (mostly 15 years old and older) appear to be 195 dollars but most current models within the past decade or so are only $50-95 dollars to repair. The info is readily available on their website. The rod repair handling fee for Orvis is $60.
