I'm a Middle Eastern who's on nobody's side, I noticed that most people speaking about this subject don't have the full picture. I see all these western Esport personalities acting like conspiracy theorists, I don't know, maybe they don't care. anyway, I'll tell you EXACTLY what's happening, no sugar coating. so brace yourselves and excuse my English.
First, let's talk about how Saudi Arabia operates: The kingdom was founded by the Al Saud family, who hold the government's power, along with the Alalshikh family, who are religious leaders. Now there is this man, Turki Alalshikh (42 years old and a huge nerd), a descendant of the religious Al Sheikh family, is now ironically involved in Saudi Arabia's entertainment industry, he's an adviser at the Royal Court under the rank of Minister and current Chairman of the General Entertainment Authority. He's invested God knows how much money in sports, music, and video games. aiming to "modernize" the kingdom. (I believe he was present at the GAMERS8 event). However, "some" religious scholars and figures in Saudi Arabia do not agree fully with Turki's plans, fearing they could erode the Islamic and Arab identity of the kingdom. Some religious scholars who spoke out against him have even been arrested. I believe two of them.
Ironically, Turki is on the side of the LGBTQ peple (sort of), which puts him at odds with the religious community in Saudi Arabia who strongly oppose his views. Despite their opposition, they can't stop him, because first, he's closely connected to the royal family and married to an Al Saud princess. second, the majority of the religious figures in the kingdom are against openly criticizing the government because they concider this act as encouraging extremism and they prioritize unity above all. you see how complicated the situation is?
In my view which may be wrong, it's okay for LGBTQ people to visit Saudi Arabia, but they should be mindful of local customs. the great majority of Muslim people are very conservative. In the Middle East, some people don't even know what LGBTQ+ mean. Hopefully, things will improve in the future. In our religion, if you are not in war. it's okay to engage in business and dialogue with people even if you disagree with them. hell, perhaps this situation could encourage more dialogue instead of blindly exchanging hate online.

I find the attempts of somehow equating lgbt persecution with public pda and tattoos to be weak examples. You cant control if you're gay. You can control the amount of affection you show your partner in public, or if you show your tattoos.
I think hearing from people lgbt community who lived in Saudi would prolly give the public some crucial information on what its really like over there for someone like them. But i understand how difficult that could be for..... obvious reasons.

I have mentioned this before, but I used to live in Saudi for most of my life till I moved to the UK last year with my British wife.
When she came to visit me in Saudi, I immediately told her that we couldn't do PDA or otherwise we would be drawing unwanted attention. Guess what she did? She immediately respected that these are the rules here and avoided even holding hands just to be safe.
You might be asking, "What about her attire? Was she forced to wear hijab?". And the answer is no. No one forced her to wear anything or even looked at her funny. All she had to do was wearing something not too revealing, and people never even bothered her.
So to that guy who keeps saying he feels his life is in danger just because he takes it in the rear, he couldn't be further from the truth.
Like Mike said, there are rules, culture, and traditions that every country abides by. You can't come to wherever you want, apply your own rules, and then expect people to accept them. I have a number of stuff I don't like about the UK, but I don't force the country to bow down to my ways just because we used to do things differently where I come from.
People need to grow up and understand that the world is not running on 1 ideology. Hell, even their own country have problems with minorities. So if that can't be fixed in their own backyard, it's naive to think it can be fixed anywhere else.

The reason people single out the Saudi government is because they’re the ones taking over esports and directly running these events.
While I definitely agree 99% of companies are engaged in morally bad actions. The Esports events are being run and benefiting the Saudi government directly, and they’re the ones executing gay people. There is also agreements between governments that they need to treat tourists different way than their natives. The government of Saudi Arabia for example has to agree to guarantee the safety of the tourists so they can take those tourists. None of your Flight companies will fly to any country that has not accepted those terms. Of course nothing in this life is not guaranteed, but if you follow the rules and do not wonder outside of the tourist areas you will be protected, because that is how tourism works. If you go solo in some more "dangerous" areas or doing dumb things yes you will be in trouble, but if you follow their rules and be a just tourist then you will be fine.
We saw this in Soccer world cup where the security of the station only had tourists rainbow flags taking in to safe keeping so they won't have problems with the Middle-eastern crowd at the station. Nobody got arrested or hurt physically, because of that. Also if you KNOW that someone do not agree with something and you go to their country arrogantly pushing it to their face. Yes you might have problems with their Police, because again their job is to upheld peace and you are disrupting it. Also EVO is like 3 days so you can handle that as a human being and just keep it to yourself.

I am of the belief that not everything has to be for everyone. But EVO built itself on being a privately funded community event in which anyone can participate and has taken place in locations where there was no exclusion by law of anyone. I will acknowledge that it can be difficult regarding visa but it certainly isn’t impossible nor is it against the law for Saudi Arabians, Middle Easterners, or anyone to be themselves in the countries that EVO occupies. They can say it’s fine to come to the country and respect the law but at the end of the day it’s at the discretion of the Law enforcement what is or isn’t acceptable so I think there is valid criticism there but only when it comes to EVO imo. With EWC that’s the money coming from the Saudi Arabian government so it is what it is.

It was funny though. Boycotting evo is pointless though its big but its not THAT big to the point where enough people will care enough to raise a stink loud enough to get acknowledged. Especially if most reactions are gonna be "well thats less competition for me."
Also saying their LGBT existence is the danger itself makes me think they have a gaydar tool.

I think loads live in this bubble that the whole FGC has always been friendly and inclusive, it has in the, i wanna say "Popular" places like UK or USA. Pakistani talent was discovered less than a decade ago so we only knew bout them recently, guess what its illegal to be gay there too. Same with lots of African countries (big up ivory coast tekken fgc) many of those countries are very unfortunate meanwhile we have a lot of privileges. Theres no rulebook, theres no guidelines. You said if I said ten good things about mk1, you’d send me sparking zero. Here you go
    Ten good things about mk1
1 voice acting- you’d be lying if you said the voice acting wasn’t good, with the exception of nitara, but that’s not a valid debunking, you wouldn’t say a movie was ruined because one bad actor in it.
2-colorful/world design- I understand some people might not enjoy the brighter tone compared to previous mks but many do, maps are bright and generally take place in more happy places then mk11 and are more realistic compared to tekkens backgrounds of insane stuff like an asteroid.
3- story mode, not perfect but for a fighting game story mode it was pretty good, I liked it more then tekken seven where akuma got involved.
4- guest characters, it’s awesome to be able to play as characters that look so cool on tv, they are all well done and feel like the characters they represent. Omni man flys quickly and hits hard, peacemaker looks goofy and uses all his tools from the show, homelander was executed the best as he’s always flying and since in the boys tv show he didn’t learn how to fight in game he just throws haymakers like a child.
5-cosmetic quality, the cosmetics are expensive but I think most will agree they’ve made some interesting ones, reptile mileena, kitana earthrealm clothes come to mind, creative and cool looking, Johnny Indiana jones, plenty of examples if you look up cool mk1 skins
6- graphics, it looks much more realistic then tekken or most fighting games, this paired with brighter colors makes it beautiful, characters also often have moves with lots of color, like li meis purple or reikos red, kitana blue, mileena pink. So lots of color and it helps distinguish characters.
7- challenges for skins, a lot of people might not want to grind for the harder to get skins but for the ones who are dedicated it is a nice bonus, and the grind has to exist to keep the really hardcore players involved,
8-kameo system, first of all I like having my character always have all their moves instead of in variations. But cameos are cool, they allow for the same characters to be played differently, not to mention that it allows more fam favorite characters to make an appearance in game. For example playing omni man with jax means you want to be in the air, playing him with sareena means you’ll be in the ground more but have more range. Same character with the same moves but different play style. Also it allows for people to come up with combos that have more paths because different cameos give different combos.
9-realistic people, as opposed to street fighter or tekken where there are 400 pound guys jumping and spinning mk1 has more realistic character design. Think zangief from sf6 or king and the bears from tekken.
10- animations, in many other fighting games characters will have moves that look physically impossible, tekken has many. In mk1 characters are obviously very strong and able to jump/ have more power then real people, but when they do a kick it doesn’t look like they should’ve broken they’re back.
11(in case you refute or argue one of the previous), character uniqueness, in tekken characters have different roles they fall into, but for the most part you could most moves and switch them between characters and it wouldn’t be noticed. Like it’s mostly punches and kicks so most models could do that. In mk1 it’s punches and kicks but they have specialties to them, like raiden has elcticity in his strings, li mie has sparks and use of her dragon thing. Plenty of examples
I don’t know how you reach out to me or if you’ll even see this. Just reply and I’ll see it, Im also subscribed because even though I disagree with some points I agree with many.

I agree with the “different culture, different behavior” sentiment. I grew up the only long haired white boy in a rough ghetto, and I’m well acquainted with the idea that I don’t belong in certain parts of town lol. But, if the people around me decided they didn’t care that I wasn’t welcome somewhere they were going, I’d feel a little stepped over as well. It’s not “strange” or entitled for them to feel shitty about their friends leaving them behind for a chance to make a buck. That sucks. It’s understandable, and what people do is their decision to make, but let’s not pretend we don’t understand why that sucks for some of these people. It’s fine to say “if you don’t wanna support them, focus on places that you do wanna go”. That’s fair. But also, I don’t blame them for looking at the people around them and asking “why would you support somewhere people like me aren’t welcome??”. Because just cuz it’s “decriminalized” doesn’t mean that a large portion of the culture doesn’t despise gay people. It just sucks to see your friends leave you behind for that scene. Again, I agree with you, but I won’t pretend not to understand both sides here. Great video ✌🏼

It's not about PDAs. It's about Pakistan having *zero tolerance* for gay/bi/trans people, and people with no tolerance don't deserve it in return. You can cover your tats. A gay person can't pray the gay away, and just because they aren't kissing the same sex in public doesn't mean there aren't other ways to learn their sexuality and persecute them for it. Checking their socials, where a person might have it in their profile that they're LGBT. Or doing something in a post that shows they're LGBT. If you've been on Twitter, you know people love to post their identity traits all over their accounts from pronouns to flags to just outright saying what they are. That's more than enough easy to find information for Saudis, who collectively hate non-straight people, to persecute someone with merely for existing and having a trait they have no control over.
Don't know where I got Pakistan from then. Points still stand tho. The issue isn't about PDAs. It's about Saudi having *zero tolerance* for the existence of gay people, which is again, a trait that the person can't just take off or cover up like inappropriate clothing or tats.

Not watching saudi (government) events and rally others to do so aswell.
No governments as patrons ( with the control that brings) for the FGC, as it was.
So far the FGC was not about huge money. At least way less than Golf or other sports that the Saudi government bought into.
Most tournament players compete because of their passion not because it is paying their rent/making them rich.
Some coach/stream or have other sources of income.
The huge saudi money injection is not saving something that would collapse any time soon without it.
( Also remember how the Saudis famously didnt pay Qudans as promised after he won the big Tekken 7 tournament over there. Borderline scam that seemingly was resolved much much later)
Vierwers and "influencers" could reject it. Sajam and a few others already did.
There are so many other TWT ( and other) events happening this year that one big tournaments doesnt leave a vacuum if you miss it. There is still EVO Las Vegas and TWT Finals for good money and prestige.
Other more commericialized sports are easier preys because they were already a business in the first place.
FGC competitors are not Golfers. You listen to the FGC TOs, they are not doing it to get wealthy.
It would keep going as it did during T7 and like it is now. Saudi government involvement is first and foremost benefitting the competitors - until they become hostages on a saudi airport - and their teams.
"Let" them grab the money but dont give them any shoutout for it, or say you want a repeat of it.
Best case scenario is, the saudis view the FGC as not even worth the effort and cancel any future plans for it. No more blood money in the FGC and no more top lvl gangsters ( like MBS - Saudi government crimes are his crimes- from kashoggi-treatment for journalist to yemen war etc ) as patrons.
