"GASCAP" Message on Wrangler

- In this RUclips I look at what caused the “GASCAP” message on my Jeep Wrangler dashboard and explain the solution I decided on to fix it. The “GASCAP” message indicates a problem with the fuel cap or evaporative canister system.
The vulnerable location of the canister on Wranglers makes it prone to damage from rocks and other obstacles. After looking at options, I went with the Poison Spyder® evap canister skid plate.
Please note that a series of video clips/photos is shown to illustrate my Jeep in a water and mud situation which did not follow the “Tread lightly” ethic. This was an unfortunate occurrence and, while I hope not to repeat this, I would also like to encourage other off-roaders to learn from others’ mistakes and avoid similar situations.
PS: After I uploaded this video, about two weeks later the “Gascap” message came back on😡. I added RTV automotive silicone to the O-ring between the canister and integrity module and the problem was again resolved. Sealant shouldn’t really be needed, but I assume using aftermarket parts (Autozone/O’Reillys) the seal/fit may not have been as tight as on an OEM unit. 𝘼𝙡𝙨𝙤 𝙗𝙚 𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙙𝙪𝙡𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙡𝙮. LOL!!! I've been working on GASCAP/P0455/PO456 the past month, this was HILLARIOUS to watch. Because you nailed what I've been doing -- "I'll try the gascap, nope. I'll check the lines, nope. I'll check the charcoal canister..." -- kills me that you went to check yours and it was straight up GONE hahaha

Thank you! Didn’t realize there’s an o-ring and I kept getting the “gascap” msg after I ripped my canister out.
Some one stole it or the lines and electric plug would be broken off
yeah i was wondering how that wiring harness was in pristine condition..
I wonder if someone stile yours...the wires aren't even damaged even tho it fell off ...huh well anyway I need that poision spider thing...
Also more recently found the plastic tubes on top of the gas tank get brittle with age and can crack, causing this message. A smoke test will sleuth it out.

Have you had any other issues with this? I'm dealing with this in my 09 and replaced the integrity module since my canister looks like new still.
I have had no problems before this canister was ripped off, and I had problems after when I did not install the integrity unit correctly. Since I got the integrity unit oriented properly I have had no problems in the last two years or so since the video was made
@@KenTheJeepGuy that's good to hear. What brand vapor canister did you go with? Factory? I'm replacing that next. I did the integrity unit and just swapped gaskets to get a tighter fit. Still get the gascap code. Did yours go away the first time you cranked it or did you have to run through a tank of gas? I've read people say it needed to go through up to a few tanks of gas.
@@Tactical_Pterodactyl_Knives aAs I recall, I added clear silicone to the gaskets for more insurance. I think I bought both the canister and integrity unit at Autozone. I followed on-line instructions to clear all codes, so I started fresh. And, happily, it didn’t come back!
@@KenTheJeepGuy where did you find the instructions to clear it? I think I've fixed it but the word gascap still comes on every start. I haven't found any instructions for clearing it. And thanks for taking the time to respond! It means a lot.

Did your jeep misfire when you gascap light came up??
No. No symptoms at all.
@@KenTheJeepGuy my 2008 jeep jk has new engine since 2018 have only 50000km on the engine now has gascap sign and misfire at idle
my guy was missing a whole evap canister
Glad all is well but this video is not for the average persons check engine light problem. You lost entire evap canister. Crazy. Hope you Jeep dried out O.K.

She is! Since recording this, I have also discovered that the plastic parts on the top of a wrangler, gas tank, can crack, and cause air leaks, making the light come on.
