  • We chose the Kvareli wine cave for a wine tour. They also have a nice restaurant on the hill above the cave. We did a wine tasting tour in the entrance cave which was nice. After dinner we retreated to our camper in the parking and stayed the night there. Although we asked upfront, security first wanted us to move outside of the winery grounds in the evening (we didn’t want to drive/move having had some wine - which was ok). Before we came to Georgia we were not really aware of its long wine making history and had not heard about the qvevri wine making technique. They press the grapes and then pour the juice, stems, skins, stalks and pips into the qvevri, which is then sealed. The juice is then left to ferment into wine for five to six months before being decanted and bottled. Chacha (Georgian brandy) is distilled from what is left after bottling.
