*The Six Organ Sonatas by Mendelssohn are wonderful, and I'd like to dedicate this organ album to the late John Scott whose own recording of these Sonatas provided me with much inspiration for my own interpretation. Which is YOUR favourite Sonata?*

My favorite is the 6th! It's such a masterpiece and I'm studying in right now.
      Congratulations for the excellent performance!

I have to say that this is probably some of the best organ music on RUclips

I purchased a vinyl recording in the 1980’s of Peter Hurford playing Sonatas # 2, 3 and 6 along with 3 preludes and fugues. I have never heard a better performance of these works until today’s album! Congratulations Richard on this tremendous feat and for playing them on 6 different organs. I loved the 2nd and the 6th, with a special like for the final movement of the 6th!

The Finale in No. 6 always surprises me, such a tender ending, a contrast to the "loud as you can play" finales of so many compositions.

Such naturally musical playing, at well-chosen tempi and with beautifully judged phasing. I am a recitalist myself and I hold your interpretations of these wonderful Mendelssohn works in high regard. Thank you for enriching this evening for me!

Thank you very much Julian! I played No. 6 again in my ‘Festival Organ Recital’ on a different organ, No. 4 I’ve played a number of times and No. 1 is in my Arundel Organ Recital. Try searching for Mendelssohn in the search function on the BIS channel homepage 😊

Such a glorious treat to hear all six of the Mendelssohn Organ Sonatas in succession. Your inspired choice of a different virtual organ for the 'character' of each Sonata, Richard, made for an extraordinary listening experience that I would categorize as blissful pleasure. Of course, the virtuoso playing which we have come to expect, but which is also the outcome of an enormous amount of work that you put into preparing your recital programmes, was the icing on the cake. Just magnificent!

Thank you so much - it’s so enjoyable putting these programmes together, and it’s wonderful to learn new repertoire. Numbers 2 & 6 were learned especially for this recording. In fact, they were only learned the day before I recorded them. I’ll definitely be playing them again soon! 😊

Spectacular! Great pedalwork on #3 especially. I play for a German Lutheran congregation, and 3 and 6 are their favorites during Lent. Just when I thought I might retire them for a year, I stumbled upon your performance today! What an inspiration.

i was first introduced to this magnificent music through the HMV Great Cathedral Organ Series in the 1970s and have listened to some wonderful recorded versions over the years; your's is up there with the very best (having now listened to this whole recording 3 maybe 4 times). Rating - fabulous!

I adored No 6, I still play a recording I made of that in Liverpool Met in 94, with a luxurious acoustic

Marvelous playing, Richard, and thanks SO much for sharing your talent. It was sublime listening to all six of these sonatas consecutively. At times I felt like I was listening to Bach!

Many thanks David - I’m really glad you enjoyed this album. If you’re interested, I played that 6th Sonata again last Saturday in the Festival Organ Recital. It might be interesting for you to compare the two performances as I use a different organ for my recent performance.

Fantastic music and playing, Richard! Amazed reading the comments that you only learned no.2 and 6 the day before recording...would definitely take me a lot of 'plus VAT' time to be able to do this!

I cannot pick a favourite sonata, since they are all brilliant. And most of all, beautiful and transparant performed here!
For me, personally, your performance of the 5th Sonata (I think the must unknown of these 6 sonatas) stands out, because the combination of the piece and the Görlitz organ is outstanding. This organ has such warmth and is a good mixture of romantic, baroque and classical stops.
    Thanks for this experience!

...So beautiful! All six Sonates op. 65!
    Thank you very much!
You are a phantastic player, and your presentation of the different virtual organs and your channel are so amazing !
I can't find the right words, because my english is not very good!
    Much greetings from Germany!

Can you tell me what registrations you used for Sonata 6? Absolutely perfect!

  • @lordenoch0
    @lordenoch0 3 года назад

That allegro assai vivace in the first sonata always sounds so muddled in any recordings I listen to. Due to the registrations, speed, whatever, I can rarely make out the notes being played in the right hand. I do love playing these sonatas, but I wish this movement was slower for more clarity.
