Who else have volleyball and never tried and tryouts are tomorrow so trying to learn as much in one day including working out for hours yea I’m three minutes in study everything like a hawk
Literally what I’m doing, I lost motivation to train and become better at volleyball after having to move a lot and missing tourneys, but I suddenly got a surge of motivation and wanting to change so now I’m trying to learn more and workout everyday so I’m in shape for tryouts at the end of this month :’) but I haven’t even gotten my physical yet hAh
For me, the key to understand is that H1, H2, & L are responsible for reception always, and S, H1, H2 stack in such a way that let them get as close to their natural play position as possible. Once I understood this, I can come up with the correct stacking position, without the need to memorize anything.
We had to do this during tryouts today and I just went along with it HAHA it’s so complicated update i made the team and it’s getting easier so i guess it takes time to get it!!!
forris you’ll be gooddd just stay a few feet behind the setter at all times if ya wanna hit bc i didn’t at first and learned the hard way that i shouldn’t do that😂😭
One thing for viewers to keep in mind is that this is just one theory or approach to stacking. At lower levels, you'll often see stacking and shifting that is a little different, that doesn't always have the H1 and H2 back to pass. For lower level teams it can sometimes be simpler. For example, you might have the setter simply "stack left," "stack middle," and "stack right" in which case they simply push that front row player up, and the player in either the right or left front court position drops back to pass. This is probably not as strong and effective, but some teams do this. I see it a lot on recreational teams.
Indeed, it is just one strategy from many other, depending on the type of attack, even strengths of the team. Sometimes tactics focus on strongest hitters, sometimes on the whole team because there is no particularly strong player on the team. There can also be focus on defense or on offense in particular so the strategies will obviously change. Not to even mention such a basic thing like rotation XD
For what i know stacking changes if you play with two setter and no opposite, but is just a simple version of the one he taught, the classic 5-1 that almost evrybody use. Even in my amateur club/tournament. In any case, the hard rules to follow are the same for evry kind of stacking
100% true. This is for skilled competitive teams. At many levels below that, Liberos aren't used at all, and the reception skills of Middles & Rights are often as good as the others (there's more differentiation in skill around hitting & blocking then in defense at lower levels). So in the cases where all players are more or less equally skilled at reception, I suspect stacking is actually more effective since it minimizes the distances to travel afterwards. Rotation 4 here is the best example, where H1 M2 R can just stay put and receive, no movement required. The other thing I always see at lower levels is where the base positions are actually different, so instead of the starting rotation being (clockwise) : R M2 H1 S M1 H2 they flip the M's and H's so that the starting positions are : R H1 M2 S H2 M2. In that way when the setter is in position 2 (rotation 6 here), the front row doesn't have to move.
Thanks Coach Donny.....my daughter has been running a 6-2 offense this year but needs to re-learn 5-1 for next season so this is very timely (and as always your videos are very well put together.) Your videos are some of the best on the internet, for not only volleyball players but us parents who have to learn as well. Keep up the good work!
There is a whole referee team: the 1st referee, the 2nd referee, the scorer and the assistant scorer, line judges. The scorer is responsible, among others, to keep track on rotation of the players. Before each set begins he;/she must get the sheet with so-called starting positions of the players and based on that he/she keeps track of the movement of the players on the court.
The scorer only keeps track of the rotations in terms of checking it's the correct server. It's the second referee who is responsible for calling rotation errors on the part of the receiving team. Because a lot of teams play the same system, it's surprisingly straightforward for the ref to keep track.
Honestly, I'm just checking what I should be doing (outside hitter). If everyone does that, then it'll be fine. One person shouldn't be memorizing where the whole team has to be.
@@MrJorge3010 I disagree. I am a coach. The way I coach is that every body should know where every body should be. And all my athletes, from high school to seniors get it and remember where they should be and where very body should be. This helps a lot. This video it is not for beginners. Love that Donny adds clips of the rotations being played in game - makes it so much easier to follow and how I'm supposed to move as a MB when I'm not picking up first ball
This was very helpful! I started playing volleyball 3 years ago and have just been learning from watching and playing with people in rec/beach leagues. I recently tried out for the college varsity team and missed out of a few spots off from making the team as a LS. On the evaluation the coach gave me, all the weak points were fundamentals I never learnt, passing footwork, platform/consistently passing, not getting low, stabbing at the ball when passing, wandering hands when blocking. Thank you so much for this. I'm on varsity for our high school team and we're very much in a developing stage for our level of play. None of us really know how to rotate and watching this video has helped me a lot, such as now knowing how players are only restricted by the ones surrounding them. I just need to find a way to memorize these things and help our team with rotations with the season coming up. Thank you, again. Keep up the great videos! I believe it is just because of no particular dynamics of the team in mind. The strategy will slightly change, depending on how many strong hitters there are, how many effective middles etc. This, I'd say, is just a template that could be adjusted to the team accordingly.

Damn, I needed this! My hobby team plays 4-2, but I always wondered how 5-1 worked. This is a brilliant explanation of all the situations. Thanks Coach!
great video where I'm getting back in the game after a long time away I needed this refresher. 5-1 is the most common system . one year my club team ran a 6-2 with 2 man serve receive. that was confusing for positioning because we always had two guys buried and one at the net
thank u for tutorial we have upcoming volleyball game with other school so were doing this formation and im not really catching up at trainings so this was very helpful
Thanks for the video! How does the rotation look like when you have an Opposite that plays a defensive role. I know it's not optimal, but everyone doesn't always have an opposite that scores all the points in less competitive leagues.
For rotation 1 there are is one notable option, being H1 and S moving close to the net to reduce the distance for the Setter and the Opposite moving back to pass as well. Important for Rotation 2 is that the Setter needs to be between the Libero and H1 (which is often overlooked as they are far away from another). Also in all rotations it is possible to add a 4th player to paassing against very strong opposing jump serves if necessary.
Donny, regarding rotation 1, I am assuming the Right Side/Opposite stays on the left and hits Outside for the entirety of this rotation? Seems that would be simpler than switching mid-rally -- especially in a fast paced game where having your front-row players switching mid-rally means you don't have a fully formed blocking line for a moment, leaving the defense exposed.
Yes, this rotation would be wierd. My coach has my opposite and Outside hitter swap hitting for that one round, so Opposite would be hitting huts/4's, and OH's would be hitting 5's/opposites for that one rotation
Daniel Akerman As an M2 I can’t even begin to explain how much of a problem this is on any given team. Going up with wing hitters with no block set is troublesome to say the least. Not to mention a late blocker usually means foot work is poor. If I trip over another OPP coming in late to take the outside block I’m gonna lose it!!! Just STAY THE WHOLE TIME!!!! Lmao
It's interesting watching this again, especially after watching a replay of the men's euro champion's league final. What I found interesting was that Zenit Kazan (the team that won) used a 4 man receive in all but rotations 5 & 6 with the right side/opposite forming an important part of the serve receive which is different to what most teams use (professional, college and high-level amateur). Considering how hard people serve in modern volleyball, should a 4 man service receive be something that more teams consider?
I have been following your videos and I find it informative and helpful. Your presentations were smooth and on point. But I am always troubled on what are the frequent mistakes or errors the players make during an actual game when they have been avoiding it during practice. Could you make videos for the "mistakes and errors" a specific player make (for libero, setter, hitters, etc) so that we, too, can avoid it. Or make videos for basic errors, mistakes and penalties in a volleyball game. For me it could be interesting and way helpful. Thank you if this be granted.😊. Kudos!
This is really recommended in professional volleyball where ayers have already adopted to their position. Im lower levels, teams are adapting Setter-Open-Middle scheme which is an old tactic which will bring different and a messy rotations.
Great video as usual coach, maybe if you use some kind of magnetic toys onto your board and use it as a player in your explanation and explain more about how the player move and change place when their are in offensive or defensive , it would help us alot on understanding the volleyball game. Can't wait for your next video :D
Awesome, I've been searching something like that about two weeks ago, but YT didn't have any good stuff. Plus, would you kindly consider something about where people should be in defense (since most people know where they should be attacking, but that would be also nice)? Ofc. for 5-1. If there aren't any strict places where someone should stand (considering how many people block etc.) please just let me know. There is many good tutorials on this channel, upgrading my volleyball skills sistematically. Thanks for all the work!
My school just started a volleyball team this year and the person who planned our games made the first game a week after we started practicing. so informative I'm so happy for this video coz even me want to be a setter but I'm confusing how the setter work of a rotation move. what if the setter got the 1st ball?
@@Jade-qv8su Yes, but the problem in this case is that the libero should set from behind the end zone (overhand pass). My team used to practice with Middle position setting in these situations too

Lmao
best 5-1 tutorial on youtube
Awesome video Coach. It was really helpful as I have been coaching boys varsity volleyball in Highschool this spring season.
thank you! I've been struggling with rotations 😊
it was amazing.. i used it to teach rotation to kids at gym. thank you so much
Glad you liked it!
I really love this video! I shared it with my friend who loves volleyball.
It’s hard to memorize rotations so this is extremely helpful!
Cool stuff, I'll have to check out if you have some good defense too, because sometimes I just don't know where to stand.
Kudos!
This helps so much! Thank you for making this video.
This is really recommended in professional volleyball where ayers have already adopted to their position. Im lower levels, teams are adapting Setter-Open-Middle scheme which is an old tactic which will bring different and a messy rotations.
Volleyball is more complicated sport than what you think.
Okay I had to watch the vidoe 3 times to understand my H1 and H2 rotations, but now I do! (At least I hope so)
Great video as usual coach, maybe if you use some kind of magnetic toys onto your board and use it as a player in your explanation and explain more about how the player move and change place when their are in offensive or defensive , it would help us alot on understanding the volleyball game.
Looking at this as I’m on the way to my first preseason game. Still kinda confused though but I’ll get it
Tutorial on setter hand signals, what they mean, how they can be used. You can also add in the blocking hand signals for extra info.
thanks, I am a 3rd yr. official and this helped greatly.
Haikyuu made the positions easier to follow but in reality it's fricking really hard 😂
Thank you so so so so much! This is so helpful, even with the game references!
My school just started a volleyball team this year and the person who planned our games made the first game a week after we started practicing. So while most of you have 3-4 weeks to practice and learn everything before a game, we had 1 week. I am shoving this all into my head 3 days before the game. AND SOME OF US HAVE NEVER PLAYED!!! Pray for us pls!
You guys have to use W defense in all rotations. Forget about this video
Im training to be an outside hitter, imma take you as my personal online coach lol.
i'm an opposite hitter
so informative I'm so happy for this video coz even me want to be a setter but I'm confusing how the setter work of a rotation move. what if the setter got the 1st ball?
If this happens, the libero should set the ball.
^
That is called an "Assist." We never want to be "out of system", but if that happens, the team better help the ball over then get back on track!
I've seen people do it as a strategy so the setter can't set making their attack not as efficient
@@Jade-qv8su Yes, but the problem in this case is that the libero should set from behind the end zone (overhand pass). My team used to practice with Middle position setting in these situations too
Can you do a video on defensive shifts when the other team is about to spike vs tip? As well as any other position shifts you think we should know to always be in the "right" spot
would love to see the 5-1 defensive rotations tutorial
This is a great video Coach Donny. I'm definitely going to use it to help explain to my team (who aren't so knowledgeable about volleyball). If you haven't made one yet, could you please make a tutorial on covering a block?
+Elevate Yourself yeah, I shared this video in our group me chat. and told them about your other tutorials as well.
Wow thanks for this video so much. I realize how easy this rotation actually is. That was like 10 times easier than math😂
Very very useful strong rotation order......once we learned its very useful....
