    At 73, I just ordered my very first hammock: the Warbonnet Ridgerunner and a 13' Superfly. I am not a thru hiker or UL guy, but I do try to keep it light. I only go out 3 or 4 days max. So, at my age I am going for comfort vs weight savings. Thanks for several Ridgerunner videos, they helped me a ton. You are a great teacher Shug. Appreciate it.

    I have a bear mountain bridge from the Jacks that I use now and then. I'm more comfortable in the blackbird tho so that is my go to hammock. Mosquitoes are thick round these parts also, the thermacel works well once you get to where your going, but its a little bulky. I use anything with deet in it on my clothes and old time woodsman bug dope on my skin.

  • @FloridaWild
    @FloridaWild 10 лет назад

    Shug, get yourself a Thermacell. Best thing ever for mosquitos and chiggers! I fish around the saltwater mangroves, here in FL. The mosquitos and noseeums can be murder! Five minutes of that thing running and they're gone. They also make a belt clip for it. Bullfrog Mosquito Coast spray works wonders, as well. It's sunscreen and bug repellent all in one. Enjoyed the video, as always, my friend!

    So after watching your videos four days ago and messaging back and forth, I had to get out and lay in the hammock. I really needed to get out in the woods for a bit. Took off spur of the moment and decided to play a little game called, "What's in your pack?" For the first time, my tent was not..in..the pack. I slept in my 12 oz. Grand Trunk Ultralight hammock. No bueno. Not comfortable, I got no sleep at all. It was okay, about 4:00am I realized that listening to the crickets for hours, looking up at branches reflecting the fires's glow was wayyyy better than working for 8 hrs any day.. I want one of these here Warbonnet hammocks!
    Oh, and I got a lil package from Austin, Texas today. My Texas State Fair Chili and 17 other little PackitGourmet items. Buddy Whoo..

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  10 лет назад

      Some say the bridge helps and some say it does not. You would just have to try one I reckon. It depends on the hammock and how you rig it between the trees. Worth a try I think.

    For mosquitoes up here in Canada, I just burn green poplar leaves. I think there may be something in the smoke that they don't like, or it could just be the smoke period.. Just build a big fire, and place the leaves on one side. Works every time, and keeps the little biters away for a good fifteen minutes per burn.

    I scrolled briefly through the comments to see if the question had already been asked or answered and found nothing, so here goes:
    How is it to fit a regular under-quilt to a bridge hammock like this? Does it require quilt suspension mods or lots of tweaking to get a snug fit?

    Hey Shug, love your channel, been been a subscriber for a while. You just seem like a guy that fun as anything on a camping trip! If you ever make a trip to TN., let me know, I'll straggler along! lol. And bring your mandolin, I'll bring my Martin acoustic and we'll jam! :)
    Anyway, to the reason I'm commenting. What is your fav hammock and how did the Amok fare Vs a bunched end or ridge runner hammock? Thanks bro!

    Embarrassing Warbonnet Bridge, Virtual Bear Assisted, Inversion Escape Technique. Another tribute to the bullet proof WBBR.
    We were knocking off 40 miles of AT north of Atkins, VA last week. The last night I had to hang between two trees ~30 ft apart. I made the mistake of pulling the WBBR too tight with too little angle. It felt kind of tippy but I did not readjust to a higher/looser hang before easing off to sleep. Around 2am my hiker buddy Stickman (ground dweller) was ~ 15 ft from me in his tent having a very vivid bear attack dream; “Run Al, he’s coming up the creak”. I woke up and yelled at him to pipe down, not shoot himself with his bear spray, a few other expletives, and went back to sleep. About an hour later I dreamt that a bear was pushing down on the starboard side of my hammock and lo and behold I ended up face down on my net looking at the ground. Too embarrassed to request assistance from a ground dweller I eased to my zipper (luckily at the head of the net) unzipped and quietly oozed out of the inverted hammock via the head orifice.
    Another tribute to the bullet proof WBBR.

      ***** Thanks for the reply! That's one of the top of my wish list. I just ordered the dutch argon 11 ft with that fronkey style bug net. I think I may hate that but net, but I hope not. I'm a little concerned that the warbonnet xlc will be a little hot for my area, because one reviewer said he preferred the Claytor Jungle over the WB BB because it was cooler. I'm in Louisiana and it can be hot and humid. Does it get up to 100 degrees where you are, and what do you think?

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  9 лет назад

      Greg Dale I think you'll be happy with the dutch hammock. Netting always makes it hotter...think being zipped up in a tent. The XLC has plenty of room for a breeze to get through. Not sure how the claytor could be any cooler than the XLC. I don't camp much in extreme heat. But when I do I have a tiny fan I hang on the ridgeline to move air....www.beltoutlet.com/travelon-3-speed-personal-folding.html?CA_6C15C=120136140000065708

      +Greg Dale , I got a USB powered fan from academy sporting goods for 4.95 and it works great!! I plug it into one of either my really cheap power banks or into my tough tested solar powered charging bank as I charge up my cell phone. Has a little stand on the back that I clip right over my fave on my ridgeline.
