I watched all of your hammock camping videos this winter....dreaming of the day that I would set up my own tarp and hammock. Tonight I finally set up my tarp. It was a heavy 10x12 tarp that we use for camper camping, but thanks to you....I tied a continuous ridge line with two prusik knots, a trucker's hitch, and tied the ends in porch mode using marlinspike hitches. It's not the setup I want, but it will work for now! My UCO candle is burning warmly, too! On Friday my hammock will arrive and I will sleep in the front yard piney woods of my yard until I know that I can set up my system out on the trail. Thank you for inspiring me!

love this series :D my new buddy is hostin a camp out on his farm later in the month and I was hopin to have made a knockoff ENO hammock by then to get started off in my newfound hammock craze (maybe with a modified mummy sleeping bag to act as under+over quilt) and after that Im going to use it in place of a bed when I go back to college this fall :)
Managed to stumble on these vids and whoooo buddy, they've been great XD number 9 is probably the best in my opinion in terms of the amount of comedic relief, but they're all extremely informative and I'd definately include links back if I ever do a camping video or two showcasing my new hammock
its fascinating how much overlap some of the stuff in the vids has to do with every day things, such as the turks head (or as I know it and see it more frequently called: cows hitch (at least in paracord bracelet videos)) and the marlin spike hitch (also called a magic/adjustable loop in crochet {it lets you crochet in the round [circles] } )
edit: do you take subscriber gifts? I was planning on making some alcohol furnaces as a DIY and a few other things that I may have excess of that could use a good home

Wow this series was usefull, thanks. I'v allways been a tentcamper but the last few years I'v been to wet hilly forests with a lot of underbrush, often wishing for a tentspot to go with that otherwise amazing campspot, and haven't slept as good as I used to. Hammocks seem to be the solution and for the last few weeks I'v been finding info whereever I can. First found your video review on the Amok Draumr which interests me because of the flat lay (I'm a side/belly sleeper that) but after watching more and more videos I'm under the impression classic hammocks have peeked my interest as well, because I do wake up on my back. And for some reasons it seems ta make for a better camplayout if that makes any sense.
I love the tarp you made for yourself and was therefore really glad you mentioned the Superfly in this vid. In terms of shape it seems to offer everything you could want. I guess it could be lighter but in comparison to a tent (my two person tent weighs 3,3 kilos = 7,3lb) it's all very light, about half of what I'm used to.
Loved singing throughout the videos :-) This is a hobby so it's nice to watch light videos. That slowmo explanation of tying a not had me gasping for breath, thanks :D

great videos for the newbie hammocker!! spent a couple nights in a friends hammock and can't wait to get my own, i like to hike with my dogs and i was wondering what size trap would be good for keeping 2 dogs fairly dry (if you can really do that ;) ha) in a rainstorm out in NE TN (think lots of rain and wind). i think my question was answered a couple comments ago (the one about having room to move around in) but don't know if you know any hammockers with dogs who might say something else

Forty years ago I decided I would never sleep on the ground again. I had used a hammock in Boy Scouts when I was young and never got wet. My boys and I bought a couple of cheapie ones and progressed from there. My thinking was that it's better to be dry and chilly than wet and cold. Over the years I have developed techniques that are now the new thing. I use an old mesh hammock beneath my sleeping hammmock to lay out my clothes and rain gear. I use a thin summer bag spread out beneath my sleeping hammock suspended on shock cord similar to what is now referred to as an under quilt. I use a 12X12 tarp (now Tyvek) that swings up under the hammock for sleeping and closes off making a cocoon in cold weather to contain heat and protect from wind. The extra size tarp is nice for shelter when deployed as an awning. I hang my pack under the hammock inside the shelter. It's bulky a little heavy and takes a little time to set up but it's dry, warm, comfortable, roomy, convenient, and works in all weather. I've used it down to the twenties and never gotten cold (when it's colder than that I rent a cabin). I'm always looking for new tips. Thanks for posting the series. Happy hangin'

Eyup shugy just bought a DD XL tarp unused as yet, but this got me thinkin about the gettin the DD Frontline Hammock to go with the tarp or the DD Travel Hammock / Bivi but was put off when I read about the not so breathable base in the travel model. Bearing in mind I am a total newbie to this, your undoubted experience will help me a lot. Would the Frontline hammock in your opinion be worth my while. Shug, do you have advice on tarp size? I’d like something big enough that I have room for my hammock and gear and also big enough that on a rainy day I can move around under it some without feeling like I have to sit in the same spot to stay out of the rain. Also like to be able to use it for ground tarp camping as well if possible. Some folks swear by 8x10, others say 10x10 at a minimum. Don’t want it to be a huge sail in the wind, but large enough to offer good protection. Thanks!

Your so good, working with stuff. you should invent a hammock all in one with tarp designed from a sleeping bag. The sleeping bag can be made out of the hammock material easier and faster to put up. So you would just hook the sleeping bag to the trees and deploy the tarp if needed.

"Permafrost"? Unless you are above a certain latitude, like in Central Alaska, we don't have permafrost. Arden Hills? Roseville? No. Lovely video. I always enjoy your stuff.

What kind of "gloves" are you using. Looks like those would be a good balance between dexterity and warmth, well not so much warmth. Sort of 60 40 or maybe 90 10.

This looks awesome, but how much would all this stuff cost? Especially for negative-temperature equipment?

Hard to put a number on it. I bought some of my kit and made some of my kit. Underquilts are a bit pricey. Any good down-filled insulation does not come cheap. Though you can for sure find cheaper ways. I reckon hobbies cost some. Sorry I can't give you a hard number but I just don't think of it in those terms. Carry forth.

Thanks so much for this informative and entertaining series! I'm wondering if you have any info to share on double/2-person hammocks? The only reason I choose a tent is because it allows for intimate contact (trying really hard to be PC!) with my significant other ;-) ;-)

Nice video series! Thanks for making it. By the way, this part Hammock How-To....PART 10....Final, Finale, Fini........ Tarps & Final Thoughts has an uncanny resemblance to "Stupid sexy flanders" Stupid sexy Flanders! (WITHOUT the annoying loops)

Sudden.....I wanted to have a more comfortable coffee in the morning and still be in my sleeping bag sitting up. Hammock restores me and I get longer sleep.

What precisely is in that "COCO" of yours.Now-why do you have a slack hammock?
I have mine(gathered end ) reasonably taught & get a good nights sleep and its great on the partial slipped disk

+John williams I like sag in my hammock so I can sleep on an angle. Better for me. Less stress on suspension.
