In Punjab, the head of the Shiromani Akali Dal, Sukhbir Badal, has been handed a religious punishment. Today, Sri Akal Takht Sahib announced that a final decision regarding this matter will be made after Diwali. It is important to note that the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Ragbir Singh, has declared Sukhbir Badal as "Tankhaiya," which means he is under a religious penalty, and a ruling regarding his punishment is forthcoming.
Jathedar Giani Ragbir Singh stated that the decision will be taken after Diwali, while the nominations for the upcoming assembly elections will close on October 25, just two days from now. This indicates that Sukhbir Badal will not be able to contest in the elections himself.
Sukhbir Badal has faced accusations during his government tenure, including granting amnesty to the accused in the Bargari sacrilege case, appointing Sumedh Saini as DGP, and failing to take action regarding incidents of disrespect towards the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. In his ruling, Jathedar Giani Ragbir Singh noted that as the head of the Akali Dal and the Deputy Chief Minister, Sukhbir Badal made decisions that harmed the Sikh community and caused significant damage to the Panth.
Giani Ragbir Singh also emphasized that Sukhbir Badal should come before the Akal Takht and seek forgiveness for his wrongdoings, just like any ordinary Sikh. He has been given a period of 15 days to present his clarification at the Akal Takht. Until he personally visits Sri Akal Takht Sahib to seek pardon, he will remain under the status of "Tankhaiya."
This development has raised significant discussions in Punjab, particularly among the Sikh community, as it emphasizes the importance of accountability and adherence to Sikh values among its leaders. The Akal Takht's decision underscores the continuing relevance of religious authority in political matters within the Sikh community.
