- When asking the question: Who Is The Greatest Overall Skater Of All Time?
one must go back to the 70's, when to be a great skateboarder, a variety of disciplines was required including street, pool, park, slalom, freestyle, fullpipe, high jump, downhill, barrel jumping, and it has to be done at speed, with fluidity and style.
One name that must be mentioned in this conversation is the great Richy Carrasco of the Flying Carrasco Brothers. Not only was he a champion in the 70's, he has excelled throughout all the decades and still shreds currently, and continued breaking World Records including most 360s (142) and fastest 100 cone slalom speed...witness this and more in this inspirational video that will motivate you to skate for life, and cements the important legacy of Richy, Rene and David Carrasco.

Niche skills not overall greats. Still amazing
These guys were good all around, but in the 70's freestyle and slalom were two of the main disciplines. For some context thats like Nyjah Huston, besides being great at vert (which he's not) and street, wins Street League in 2065.
@@RealSkateStories Gonz, Caballero, Cardiel, Alfonso Rawls, Danny Way, Grant Taylor, Zion Wright, Jake Wooten etc. I’d say are truly the most well rounded overall greats in what the majority of the history of what skateboarding has been. That would really make for an awesome deep dive

Slalom, 1 footed 360's on those tiny boards is sick. Man, I love that damn 4 wheeled wooden toy. Born in 71, still skate when I can. Love when kids at the park ask "How old are you"? I say 52 and the kid replies in disbelief, "Your older than my Dad". Hilarious.

Back in the 1970s Tony Alva was the best at nearly every type of skateboarding (pools, freestyle, barrel jumping, high jump, ramp riding, full pipes, all of it). Alva also had the style and attitude that captured and inspired so many other skaters. In modern times, I would say Danny Way was the best overall. Danny won Tampa pro for street and vert and was Thrasher SOTY. Danny created the mega ramp and has done some if the gnarliest tricks and gnarliest slams.
Great skater still rippin to this day. Also a great friend. Love the brown bomber.
Although no one filmed Russ Howell spin 163 360s at the Anaheim Family Fun Center in 1987 during a Freestyle contest, there were several witnesses, including I. The few of us still alive, have confirmed that over the past decade or so through social media. Unfortunately, Guinness only recognizes video proof when it comes to action stunts. Those who witnessed it, was something special and will never be forgotten.

@randycarrasco4995 nope! Before video cameras, everyone relied on multiple eyewitnesses during events. Although home vhs cameras were around since the 1950s, very few had handheld video cameras all the way into the 1990s. Filmed or not, those who witnessed Russ Howell's 163 consecutive 360s know he's the all-time record holder, official or not.

Being an eyewitness among several others who counted the same, is all we need for FACTS. you weren't there to see it. Calling me and others liars, who I know are honest and accurate in our recollection, doesn't make you look cool or an expert. After all these years, you still can't take others' experiences graciously and just be happy for them, too competitive.

Nice content, I never heard about these guys before. However, for me, Christian Hosoi is the most complete skater of all time. All tricks he done as most powerfull, tecnical and stylish than any other skater in the history.
No he's not. He wasn't good in freestyle or street.

i never heard of the Carrasco family before! A family that lives, eats and breaths skateboarding? Not only were they pioneers of their time, these dudes are still setting world records! Let that soak in for a minute.
It was horrible in the 90s with the pigeon holed era. I used to luv going to the local park and doing big airs, laybacks and inverts in front of the baggy pant small wheel crew.
Blender and Phillips for vert 80s, Gonz for 90s. They are my top.

Word. What puts the 70's dudes in another class in the "overall" conversation is the amount of categories they mastered. And decades they have endured.
Yeah no one's actually saying what happened to skate in the 90s and how the industry did it to itself to stay relevant they brought in non-sk8rs by chumping skateboarding down.... Skateboarding went from rad , fast and vert to standing still or skating slower than I walk.... Gimmicks that had completely failed and been laughed away just 15 years before had become the norm..... Real skaters new it non skaters fell for it....😮😮.... I am working on a book called harsh reality that will explain all of the gimmicks and stupidity of the sk8 industry 😮
@@ron8935 Good observations. Perhaps a major factor was that style of slow flippy skating was very "little kid new to skateboarding" friendly and the "industry" leaned into that. A lot of skateboarding's current podcast hosts and gatekeepers learned to do kickflips on their living room carpet before they learned to roll- and never learned to carve...and don't know anything about skateboarding pre 1992.
@@RealSkateStories I was born in the 70s but missed that super cool era due to being a bit young. I do remember it though, watching surfers and skaters was an obsession. I did chop up rollerskates to make my first downhill deck as we were pretty poor.

@@ron8935 Yeah it was all Rodney Mullen gimmick to me. I never understood it. Mullen and Welender freestyle was cool to watch, i even made a popsicle deck to muck around on, but it was always just a gimmick. We were doing kickflips years before they ran with it. But we were also doing proper inverts and big air.
I did my first handrail down 5 stairs in 88 i think. We used to set up benches down stairs. We were street just as much as park/vert. There was no line in the sand. Thats why i luv Gonz, he can STILL bust the best backside invert ever seen. Even in his 50s.
Its gotten so much better now. The old school decks are back. It never should have gone away. Grossos love letters snapped em out of it i reckon.

Ironically Hosoi and go to the same church The Sanctuary -Costa Mesa, CA. I picked Losi because he came out of the late 70's he skated every Skatepark on earth and was established 7 years before the world knew of Hosoi...check Losi 1985 Del Mar he annihilated the keyhole

Verifiable fun fact, Russ never beat Richy in any contest. Also, Richy was a mid-teen in the Guinness clip which makes that it even more rad! 👊🏽😂
I suspect, just like in music, there is really no such thing as "greatest" of all time in terms of all around. Just a lot of guys who are/were amazing. It's far too subjective. (but I'm sure that won't stop childish arguments in the comments section..lol)
Having said that, glad you showed Andy at the beginning of the vid. I'm no expert and don't follow skateboarders that deeply, but Andy's been so unique and creative that his skateboarding plowed right through the algorithm into my youtube feed. That's gotta mean something. I can't imagine there are many around right now who are as good all around as he is. He's certainly made me pay attention to him and it seems like he's a modern skater who maybe crossing over into the world of non skaters. At least a little anyway.
Agree 100%. there is no "best". Also agree having that word in the title provokes engagement.
I know people don't care anymore but freestyle skating needs way more recognition. People are still hippie jumping and doing caspers in street parts.... also, the level of freestyle skating today is off the scale.

Ahh man, so many Skaters had their specialty and prime. 70's it was all about Tony Alva & Jay Adams, excellent Skateboarders and innovators. The 80's, which imo was the Golden Age of Skateboarding. So many awesome Skaters. I mean shit, it was hard to beat the Powell Peralta team. You had, Lance Mountain, Steve Caballero, Mike McGill, Tommy Guerrero Per Weilinder and a young Tony Hawk... other then that there's too many to name but I'll throw a few out there, Christian Hosoi of course, Mark Gonzales, Lester Kasai, Steve Steadham, Rob Roskopp, Rodney Mullan, etc.. my favorite decade for alot. Of course fast-forward Bucky Lasek, Bob Burnquist. So many.

not of all time, but in the current times andy anderson is probably the most well rounded. there are better street skaters, bowl skaters, and even freestyle skaters, but he still skates at a very high level in all disciplines. that said, a lot of the top pro's could learn freestyle and be great at it. i think there is though some level of unique expression that matters. they could learn, but they don't because they think it's lame or whatever the case may be. there's some level of purity to doing your own thing.
He's just so creative. An artist on a skateboard.

It’s Eric koston. Yes he had a lot people influence it, but the shit I want to see is stylish street skating. Wert is its own thing. I’ll take sick lines on benches and some good rail shit. Maybe one of my favorites is Carlos ribiero, kickflip frontside crook, to frontside 180 out, then did a giant backside lipslider down a rail.

I have to put my 2 cents in regarding Tom Penny. Even the Japanese super dudes of today aren't doing the nollie stuff he could do on or out of transition. Frontside flips on the hip at Kelly's pool? -Reynolds said that he went there and couldn't do a kickturn on that hip. Also Billy Ruff and Hosoi as 2nd and 3rd.
