Lee Mack's joke "you can't sell Cole (an English football player) to the Geordies (Newcastle United football club)" derives from an old English saying that "you can't sell coal to Newcastle" (because Newcastle was once a major coal producer and therefore they already had plenty. Changed to add "who expressed a preference" after the makers of Whiskas were found to be cheating those figures. Much the same way as climate activists claim that 97% of scientists agree that climate change is man made...but are so far getting away with it. "A little bit of politics there."

Definitely check out Cats Does Countdown guys. As funny as the panel are, I think you’re going to get limited entertainment from an 18 year-old current affairs show from an entirely different country!
There game with the numbers and letters is called "Countdown". A few years back, Channel 4 did a mix uo night where people from one show took over another for the night, so you had newsreaders doung comedy, etc etc. One of these mix ups was to put the 8 out of 19 guys into Countdown - and it was so very popular that they decided to make it a regular thing, to the piint that it was more pipular than 8 out of 10 AND Countdown. Genius move really! Check out both the original Countdown and the 8 out of 10 cats version
I'm in the UK but I never got into this show. However, when they combine it with Countdown, it is much more enjoyable. In this clip we see Dave Spikey. I believe he has done a lot of script-writing for Peter Kay.

Countdown is a fairly serious long running afternoon words & numbers quiz . 8 out of ten cats is a late night comedy panel show about the weeks ( tabloid) news stories ( Gosh they all look young .) . Sadly Sean Lock is no longer with us . Jimmy is the host and it's a good show , but it does tend to date with time . 8 out of ten Cats does Countdown is an unlikely mash up of the two ( originally for charity) where they used the Countdown set , Rachael & Susie - the maths and English experts - and played the game with Jimmy as host . It was such a success there have now been several series . It's well worth a look .
This show started in 2005 , I don't think full episodes would be blocked as this is a Ch4 show who are more relaxed . It's mainly BBC that do the blocking . Everyone in this episode is a comedian apart from Richard Madeley who used to present a morning show . Mel Giedroyc is also a comedian but who known for presenting The Great British Bake Off .
Sure others have said this, but that lady with red hair and math(s) part, that was from the spin-off show 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown. Merry Christmas to you both, 8 out of 10 cats does countdown is very funny and a gameshow what you and your viewers can all play along with together, you are trying to do the math (S!) game and the word game by making up longer words for more points , all the usual funny comics and celebrities are guests on the show, some guests really struggle with the games and no prisoners are taken! Lots of daft little sketches in between the maths and word games to keep the laughs coming. Happy new year to everyone!
I've never understood the reason we (including here in NZ) don't abbreviate 'mathematics' to 'math', like the Americans do. Surely if you are going to abbreviate a word you do so as much as possible. "M" wouldn't work because it sounds like a letter of the alphabet or a James Bond character; "Ma" sounds like a hillbilly calling for his mother; and saying "Mat" would sound like you meant the alternative to glossy, or something to wipe your feet on. But "math" is perfectly clear. Why bother with the 's'?.

The word "mathematics" comes from the Greek word "mathema," which means "knowledge" or "learning." In the 17th century, the abbreviation "math." was used in English to refer to "mathematic," which was a singular noun. The logic seems to be there are different types of mathematics (Geometry, Calculus etc), but gymnastics is treated as a mass noun - hence 'gym' in both Britain-English and American. But there are different types of gymnastics too. 🤷♂ (And someone said gym was surely short for gymnasium, but I think people may say gym to mean "I'll do some gym practice today" referring to the activity, not the building. They wouldn't say "I'll do some gyms practice.") Rep v Reps was another argument, but I think it's different if there's common singular/plural usage: "one Rep will attend", "Several Reps we attend". But it's extremely rare for someone to want mean "mathematic", and if they do want to for some reason, they can just spell it out. Anyway, not a big deal obviously. can I recommend Mock the week s1e3 round @ 18:40 ask the politician when the comedians politicians on the spot which is 7:25 in which the comedians make jokes about different catergories I would recommnd the whole episode but it's longer than most of your reation vids as its around 30 mins. Although it is topical and so many of the subjects are from world news that week, it is what the people do with the answers that makes the show funny. There is very little competitive elements to the show, it is just a comedy panel show. There will be some more local based things you will not know but things like the death of Micheal Jackson and so on are universal. Lots of fun, and a great show.

I always loved 8out of ten cats, am sad they don’t do the original format anymore, but it was more work for them research wise and the new format was well received altho I’m not too keen on constantly watching people play countdown which is the same each week. One good episode of the original format to watch would be the one after Jimmy Cart’s tax scandal was exposed - Sean and Jon (the captains) ripped into him constantly throughout the show, was quite something to watch tho you might want to have a look at the surrounding context first

THIS show more or less follows the format you just saw, discussing topics in a very funny and witty way with changing guess. In my opinion, and like I said, hearing about what you said I think it's probably an opinion you would 1000% share, you likely would enjoy "8 out of 10 cats DOES COUNTDOWN" more; they have the witty guess and comedy, but they also have the game show type tests with words and math, which I think would be really fun for both of you... You will probably find yourself trying to solve the problems or coming up with words right along with the players
This show episode 1 from series 1 is from 2005, and as it's a show based around current news events of the time is very outdated. As someone else said in the comments a better show to watch is 8 out of ten cats does countdown, which features the same groups of people but isn't based on news events. 8 Out of 10 Cats is based, loosely, on topical news stories. This episode is from 2005, I struggled to remember some of the stories so God knows how you two managed. I think you would be better off watching the spin-off series 8 Out of 10 Cats does Countdown. Far funnier and easier to follow

In my opinion, and like I said, hearing about what you said I think it's probably an opinion you would 1000% share, you likely would enjoy "8 out of 10 cats DOES COUNTDOWN" more; they have the witty guess and comedy, but they also have the game show type tests with words and math, which I think would be really fun for both of you... You will probably find yourself trying to solve the problems or coming up with words right along with the players

This show episode 1 from series 1 is from 2005, and as it's a show based around current news events of the time is very outdated. As someone else said in the comments a better show to watch is 8 out of ten cats does countdown, which features the same groups of people but isn't based on news events. I think you have Countdown in the US?

I think you would be better off watching the spin-off series 8 Out of 10 Cats does Countdown. Far funnier and easier to follow
