Haha.. that will never happen. I will just have to redo the carpet every few years because its sitting out in the rain and snow right now without a cover. Somethings will never change..
I have a 2001 Crestliner Fish Hawk that will need new carpet in the next few years. I'm starting to do some research and I ran across your video. Thanks for the simplified explanation and your workshop looks great!
That Crestliner is an awesome boat. It was actually quite easy and cheap to restore this boat. All it takes is a few days of your time and you could save a ton of money doing it yourself. I love having heated shop. Its the main reason I bought the house that I have. I can do projects all winter long. Thanks for all your comments.
I'm now doing the same thing with my 2006 Lowe 16.5' aluminum fishing boat. The boards are all still good, so I can re-use them. But I'll have to replace the driver's seat. Keeping it docked 24/7 for five straight summers without a mooring cover (not available for this boat) took its toll. The carpeting was not as bad as your dad's, but it was bad enough. I'm wondering if fiberglassing the boards before putting the new carpet down would be worth the trouble. So far, $0 spent, but I'll have to get a new seat, carpet, glue, etc. Hope I can keep it to around $350. It's only November, so I won't be using the boat until April or May. I have lots of time.
If you leave your boat out in the weather, then it probably wouldn't hurt to do something to protect it. A simple water sealant might be much easier to do. Something like Thompsons water seal. Just paint it on and your done. Good luck!
You're an amazing son and you did a great job. I know your dad was very pleased. When you get older change is hard to take and not knowing where your cushion is or the rope isn't the same colour can confuse us old F.........rs. Thanks for sharing!
You got that right! I know he appreciates it, even if it doesn't look like it. He still fishes with his 25 cent fishing pole from a garage sale, despite all the new poles I have bought him. Sometimes, its just hard to change.
did you use SS staples or is that considered overkill? Great video and thanks for sharing. Looking at doing my carpet also and half hoping I can use it as a template in a few pieces.
Hi Randy. I just used regular staples. I've never had any issues with them. They are usually underneath the boards where they are not exposed to water. Good luck on your project.
Great video....I have the same boat and plan on tackling this project this winter. My carpet is in much nicer shape then your pops' but my wood is bad. I also have some soft spots in the floor.
hey did u end up replacing your floor? if so how was it I have the same boat as well and my floor is rotted was it fairly simple to replace the only part I'm worried about is the back because its where the wood goes under the sides and I'm not sure how to get to it. any tips would be great thanks.
On the pieces that you had to screw down, were you able to hide the screws under the carpet, like it was from the factory? I’m doing pretty much this exact project, and I can’t figure out how to hide the screws.
I think your asking about the boards we carpeted and then screwed down. We put the carpet on the board, then put them in place and screwed them down right through the carpet. The screw heads get buried down into the carpet and you don't even see them. Believe me, I tried to remove a couple screws and couldn't easily find them.
I got the carpet from Menards. Its just indoor/outdoor carpet. They now sell auto/marine carpet. I bought some for my new boat project and it was only like $0.59/sq ft. It comes in a 6 foot wide roll instead of 12 feet. Menards sells the buckets of glue right there where you buy the carpet. Make sure the glue says "for indoor/outdoor carpet."
Hi. Thanks for the comment. We cut the carpet a few inches bigger than it needs to be, then started gluing it down. When we got to the edge, we pushed the corner tight and cut it with a razor. It does not go up the side of the boat.
I used a rigid staple gun from home depot. It used narrow crowned staples. I believe they were 1/2 inch staples. Just make sure the staples are shorter than the thickness of your wood.
There sure is. A vinyl flooring is popular right now. My Father-in Law ripped out all the carpet and wood flooring in his boat and installed a solid aluminum floor and painted it.
I know! These wood prices are getting ridiculous. I've just heard some people saying that prices are finally going back down. Good luck on the restore.
I got that carpet from Menards. It was fairly cheap. It is an indoor/outdoor carpet. Don't get the cheapest stuff. Its too thin and the glue goes right through it. Technically you should get a marine grade carpet, but I've used this carpet several times now without any issues.
Hi Lonny. My Father-in law did that with his boat. It was a big project and obviously cost a whole lot more, but looks really nice. My Dad just needed a quick and cheap update to his boat, and since he was funding it, that's what he got.
@@GoMidwestFishing .. To be honest, I kind of like carpet better too. Perhaps that's because I've had carpet in vans, boat, campers, and similar. That said, my pontoon boat came with vinyl flooring, so I'll live with it.
Haha. I've been wondering why no one liked the chair in the boat... then I watched the video again and realized my Packer chair was in the background! That was actually a Christmas gift from my younger brother who passed away 2 years ago. So it will probably be in my possession for a long time as a nice reminder of him. So now you can give me a like and feel terrible about bad mouthing my awesome Packer chair. (Just giving you a hard time. You're probably a Viking fan)

You did a really quality job on it. Now you just need to teach dad how to take care of it.
Haha.. that will never happen. I will just have to redo the carpet every few years because its sitting out in the rain and snow right now without a cover. Somethings will never change..
Great job man I bet he was thrilled
Its really a testament to how good marine grade plywood actually is, I would have thought the wood would have been completely rotted
Hi Jon. I thought for sure I was going to replace a lot of wood. All I had to do is dry it out and most of it was good to go. Thanks for watching.
I redid mine and put new marine plywood in it 15 years ago and now I am redoing the carpet - the marine plywood is still 100% good!

Awesome restoration, almost like a new boat again! 👍
Thanks. It really did make the boat look nice, and didn't cost a whole lot.
That is great what you did for your Dad in only 4 days great job 👏
Now if I can only convince him to keep his boat covered, I shouldn't have to do it again. It really shows what mother nature will do over time.
You need to get him a carport
Great job, taking care of your dad, good boy
He took me fishing all my life. He deserved it. Thanks for watching.
Nice job. Dad did seem a bit underwhelmed! If my son had done all that for me, I would show a bit more gratitude. But everyone is different.
Wow, What a transformation! Awesome job on this one!
Thanks man. I was quite pleased with it myself.
Thanks for the video! Doing the same to my boat, now I know how
Thanks Nick. Its actually quite simple as long as the floor underneath is solid. Good luck on your build!
That's quite a refinish...Good to sea a protective cover!!
It turns out he always had a cover but never used it.
Nice job and that timeline was impressive.
Also, awesome Packers chair.
I appreciate the comment, and the fact that you like the packer chair. I think I have gotten more comments on that chair, than the video itself!
4 days? Boats must be really simple now. Took me 2 weeks an a bunch of weekends to recarpet a 1982 Alumacraft lunker classic.
Mine is dual console which I'm dreading pulling the boxes/dash out....
Awesome job on that boat
Thanks John. It was a fun project
Nice work!

Did your casting deck just screw down or was there rivets to cut out as well ? Thanks

What kind of hinges are those
I re-used the hinges that originally came with the boat, so I'm not sure exactly what kind they are, but I'm assuming they are marine grade.

Wow anyone that treats a boat like that doesn't deserve to have one. It's not that hard to put a cover on them.
Why carpet? Carpet for applications like this is quickly going the way of the dinosaur. Most are now using woven marine-grade vinyl flooring.
Hi Robin. I see many of the new boats with that vinyl covering. I realize the advantages of it, but I still like the carpet better.. for now.
