Call me a weird guy but this set is way better designed than any diver set we have got in past years (including the new 2020 line). Ok Friends line was great. Nowadays sets are so huge, while you can get same effect with less pieces. I's sad they got rid of those great side pieces with windows - I would love to see new version of that.
Yes! I thought the Legacy line was a great idea! Now would be the right time to re-release some 80s/90s classics, ~30 years is just about right to cash in on nostalgia.
I had a couple of Exploriens sets 6856 and 6899 that had the same mechanic with both blue and red transparent pieces. The stickers were different, alien themed.
Big thanks to the patreon members bringing us these last few vintage reviews; I've really enjoyed it. Also big thanks to Jang of course for the great quality content.
I have so much nostalgia for this set. The colors of the sub and base, the porthole pieces, the clasic fishing boat. It brings me right back to starring at the magazine's as a kid imagining that else i would make out of my favorite sets. Thank you for this review Jang
I never had any sets from this theme, but I always found it one of the coolest Lego themes. The submarines are designed so well, and everything just invited you to play with it. I think the fun factor for this is through the roof.
Must be a Nice memory with the set. The 2019 fire station is the set that ended my dark age and took me back with Lego. I started building a city since then
The control panel print on the right side of the yellow submarine's cockpit was more commonly found in the Ice Planet 2002 sets. For a while, I lost my blue control tile, so I had to order a few of this replacement tile in bulk on Bricklink for my 441 due to its rarity...
It's how they've always been named, the BURPs and LURPs. Personaly, Iv'e always loved those pieces since finding one in my attic made me rebuil one of my favorite set and brough me back to lego after my dark age. Gotta love the 6761-1Bandit's Secret Hide-Out.
I love when you get to review an older/vintage/out of print/etc set. I nice break from your bulk of content of new set releases. I hope we get a creation like you mentioned using these pieces with some of your old ones to make a new dive center. Thanks Jang and the patreon sponsor.
Love the story behind this! There’s always that one set that bring you out of a dark ages. Mine was the 8014 clone battle pack in 2008-09... that and a LEGO store opening nearby.
Great picture quality for a great set. I never got into the divers theme at that time, but in some ways I wish I had. I do definitely miss the 1990s box art. But I think that this set more than anything proves that you don't need "action features" for a toy to be fun. There's more than enough things to do with the differing water based vehicles and accessories available. This was a great throwback, thank you.
Unbelievable coincidence. It was this Set what i bought 7 Years Ago on Ebay and what just brought me back to Lego. I love this Set and actually i cant you even tell why. I love everything about it. The choise of color, the Shape, the underwater landscape and espcially the level of detailing inside the interior. The microscope and the x-ray machine in the Lab section makes this marine research base so cool
Jang: reveals he was already an adult, returning to LEGO, in 1999 Me: realizes he was only 14 in 1999 Also Me: Jang is aging as gracefully as a minifig!
Probably one of my most favorite sets as a child. Usually assembled as per box instructions and then expanded upon with creations of my own. Also went surprisingly well together with the Arctic Exploration sets.
Dude, this one was emotional for me also. I been working far for home for 6 months, pretty homesick, And this jut hit me in the feels, It´s my most beloved set in display in my house, seeing you so emotional about it. Dude I understand you, Great job with this review!!!
6:42 I believe that print was used in Ice Planet 2002 first. I love 1997s divers. So much nostalgia for that line. I have rebuilt the smaller submarine just to have it around me, because it's almost as neat as the Aquazone ones. 90s was the great time for sea exploration in lego xD
This!!... This was my very first lego set my parents bought me as a kid in the early 2000s. They bought it at a thrift shop and surprisingly it came with all the pieces and original box. Oh man your video just took me back to 2004. I've created so many different things over the years with these pieces. Good times, simpler times.
it's insane that jang started building mocs before i was even born, hell before most of us watching his videos were even born. my question is tho, what was the first moc he built using parts from this set back in 99 ?
While this set ended your dark age, it was also my first big set as a kid. It is very special to me and I went through hell and high water to collect all the pieces again after my dark age ended to assemble it again. I still display it and it always brings a smile to my face. The only piece I failed to find was the dolphin, sadly, which saddens me greatly.
I generally enjoy all of your set reviews, but this one was really fun. I love seeing how sets and pieces have changed. LEGO forensics. The minutiae is so satisfying to me.
I still have the pieces from this, I remember sitting in the car with my sister and her friend after buying this set, it must’ve been on the shelf for a couple years and it was on sale, that was such a golden age for me.
I was just about to finish my childhood Lego adventure when these sets came out. Wanted these so badly, especially after all the Aquazone theme the years before. Thanks for sharing!
And yes, I do like the old boxes Lego had in the 1990s. You can preview the mini-figures with the windows, and you can really check out different alternative builds inside and on the back. Really attracting.
this is one of the earliest memeories of lego I have ever had my cousin got this for christmas and we built it together (I was probably like six so I was more detriment than help) he gave me the boat to play with Asap so he could finish the cool parts and I was none the wiser. (somehow I snuck a shark to chase my boat at some point). Such great memories.
It' great that eventhough RUclips and Lego are your fulltaime job, you still spend personnal time building sets and enjoy Lego!!! Great for you Jang!!!
My mom bought me that set new in box back in 2001 I believe, it was discontinued but it was in this teachers supply store. This set means so much to me because it was the first Lego set I got that was over the $50 range lol. Back then my parents could only afford the cheaply priced sets on the $7.99-$19.99 scale...and I still have it :)
I’m 23 and don’t ever watch lego vids on RUclips but I’ve been on ur channel lately. Subbed. Appreciate the reviews. Also we all value ur opinion. Keep it up man.
This was one of my first sets given to me as a kid! I don't remember playing with this all built up as I was really young at the time. Awesome look back into the past and great review as always, JANG!
This was my "Lego that got away" as a kid. I always wanted this set so bad. I had other sets from the theme but really wanted this one. I've always had a thing for underwater bases since. The upcoming underwater base doesn't cut it for me but this one is still my fave. Wish I could get hold of it
Agree with you, this was my 2nd Lego set, I got this as my 6th Birthday gift (my first one being 6563 Gator Landing). I remember it was advertised in the box that the boat would float, but it mever did, but sank quite slowly so was quite fun to play with it. Didnt appreciate this set enough as a kid, and I regret using the parts to build other stuff. Now that I look at it agains as an adult, I can see how awesome this was, the special parts, the sea animals, the chrome coins, the giant plates, the equipment, the printed tiles, the x ray machine. Sure, I was excited as a kid when I got this, but as soon as I got the Star Wars sets, I thought this was boring. They should remake this, I'd totally buy it.
My brother won this set. He got it when Lego held the Titanic contest. He built a seabase and I believe he was second or third place. I still have the original instructions. Bless your pateron!! Loved this set.
Everyone who played with Lego as a kid. Will have one special set they remember as a kid. Mine was mystic mountain time lab. Time travelling set. I got it for Xmas and had hours of fun playing with it.
YEESS JANG! I love this classic review. I had the stand alone Submarine set (6442) from this line. When I came out of my own "dark age", rebuilding that sub and building up an underwater scene was a top 5 priority.
Thanks for doing this! This is one of my all time favorite sets...special to me too... I got one of these sets for my (now grown) kids for Christmas and we played the heck out of it for years! Such great memories watching this video. 😀
I had a friend who had an older brother who had this set, a pirate ship and a large red container ship, so ive etaen so many fihures with that "great" white. Great review jang, love your recent development of your content! It feels so much more engaging.
I always wanted this set back in the day. This was one of those that was just a tad expensive for my parents to buy or bad timing in saving xmas and birthday money. Such a cool set! I’m lovin the throwback reviews again.
Thats was my first ever LEGO SET when i was a Child, it was incredible, i got mine a lot of used but that seems impolute. We have great memories about the same set.
Now I know where all those unique pieces from my childhood lego box came from! I imagine my family had this set, but it was long destroyed before I came around.
in summer 99 my family moved and my dad bought my brother and I each one toy and I got this set from toys r us. it was amazing. amazingly enough the stickers are still on the pieces 21 years later.
Great review! This set is also extremely nostalgic for me as well, I believe it was my first set! At the very least it’s the earliest set I remember building and playing with. Such a nice trip down memory lane. 😊
I’ve always loved the divers sets and the stickered LURPs were awesome. The 1x2 tile with the blue printing in the submarine cockpit was actually first used with ice planet sets
This set is awesome! My first set as a kid (I am now in my "dark age" as you were) was the rock Raiders set 4980. I always wanted these underwater sets, but only ever got one in the christmas lotto in my childhood. Awesome vid!
I remember as a kid, this is the set my eyes would always go to. There was this one brochure we had that had this kit in it and I always stared at it. I was so curious to see exactly what the interior of the sub and base was.
I had the Deep Sea Bounty set as a kid and I really loved to play with it! A really great theme. The only ones I liked more from non-brand-themes were probably the Alpha-Team and the Arctic-Sets from around that time
I remember I bought just the yellow submarine from this set at a yard sale back when I was only 7 years old (I don't remember if the dude sold the rest of the set too). Coincidentally, that yard sale was where I bought my Pokémon Sapphire copy, which was my first ever main-series Pokémon game, and my Squirtle plushie, both of which I have gotten massive enjoyment out of. Looking back, I probably owe a lot of my childhood to whoever that guy was!
I think it's neat how even on a simple, small boat like the one here Lego included green and red "lights" to indicate right-of-way. It's a nice bit of detail.
I don't know what it is about these old sets, but I almost always prefer those over their modern counterparts. Probably nostalgia, even tho I was born the year this released... I'm not saying the modern sets are bad by any means, there is just something about the simplistic look of these old sets that makes me enjoy them more. I'm not much into Star Wars, but I will say that this doesn't apply for it, the newer Star Wars Models are always waaaay better than the old sets.
Great seeing a bit of LEGO's (and your) past. Especially the cool box! Even though I never had this gives me some nostalgia for a yellow Aquazone sub I had. Monster Fighters are what got me out of my dark age. Be well, all!
This was one of my favorite themes as a kid. When I was 10 I went to my local K Mart, where LEGO had a “4D” experience event for this theme. They had a trailer with a VR system that simulated flying over the ocean as a seagull(?) and also diving under the water in the sub. You got splashed and felt the breeze, it was like a way cheaper Disney ride lol. They sent us home with a few swag items. I remember they had a CD soundtrack that went along with the 4D video they played. It was dope lol. I got a poster and some other things too, like stickers or something. It was an awesome promo experience.
I like that this was your first set as an adult & that you never built this set properly and now can review it fresh! The set that ended my dark age was the first Mantis #97115 from Mega Bloks in 2013. First Lego set was the 2015 Sith Infiltrator (Scimitar). The first Cobi set was the Jagdpanzer MK IV/70V that I bought august of last year. All started with watching your videos!
Now this is pretty cool! I don't remember this set at that time, but it does remind me of the Lego Aqua Raiders theme that came out years after that, had the entire collection myself. But this one is quite interesting, the huge number of underwater animals is not common anymore in today's sets, it would cost way too much I think! But I like the feature that separates the underwater base in 2, that's really cool, and thanks for showing this set, Jang!
Well I think we all owe something to this set. RUclips would be pretty bland without our favourite lego guy.
Agreed bud
yeah
Agree
Lets dive in to it
Hans-Henrik Levy 😂👏
*sighs*
Hey that’s pretty good 🤣🤣🤣
I miss the alternative builds on the boxes and instructions. Also miss that sweet sweet GOLD.
There's something really nostalgic about this set and I didn't even grow up with it
I agree
Hands down
Nothing can beat Aqua Raiders
I think the recent under water theme was good. Those parts with the windows are cool.
I wish they would do what they did in the early 2000s, re releasing classic sets :(
I would love to get the western sets from when I was a kid but sadly lego doesnt seem interested.
Yes! I thought the Legacy line was a great idea! Now would be the right time to re-release some 80s/90s classics, ~30 years is just about right to cash in on nostalgia.
@@ratbat1072 they probably won't if they don't change their entire art style.
They really should bring back these old sets
i feel like the x-ray mechanic could be used in so many other sets as a cool play feature
I had a couple of Exploriens sets 6856 and 6899 that had the same mechanic with both blue and red transparent pieces. The stickers were different, alien themed.

The "big ugly rock piece" who else remembers that from Jangs aquariam?😂
It's how they've always been named, the BURPs and LURPs. Personaly, Iv'e always loved those pieces since finding one in my attic made me rebuil one of my favorite set and brough me back to lego after my dark age. Gotta love the 6761-1Bandit's Secret Hide-Out.
I think I do
The blue console print in the submarine cockpit was also present in the ice planet 2002 theme. Also an interesting looking theme no one talks about.
That's most popular space theme after Blacktron and classic.
I love when you get to review an older/vintage/out of print/etc set. I nice break from your bulk of content of new set releases. I hope we get a creation like you mentioned using these pieces with some of your old ones to make a new dive center. Thanks Jang and the patreon sponsor.

One of the greatest sets in the LEGO Town Divers subtheme.

Back when they would give you a baseplate so you would have room to play on it
#bringbackbaseplates
Sets never feel complete to me without a baseplate.

The boxes were cool, but I'm glad they got rid of the unnecessary plastic, as most people probably don't keep boxes
I used to have this set as a kid, it was freakin sweet. I got it for Christmas one year. 👍🏻👍🏻 I totally miss it.
I love the return to classic set reviews. Thanks for starting them back up!
I got this set for christmas back in the day. It was magnificent and also the largest set I ever got from my parents. It's beautiful.

This was always one of my favorite sets as a child. It was very special to me.

thank you patrons i love this set
6:37 I'm fairly certain that this one was used previously, namely for the Lego space "Ice Planet" subtheme.
They should remake some of the larger old sets
Two minutes into the video and I must say that's an incredible looking set for something from 1997.
Thanks for doing this! This is one of my all time favorite sets...special to me too... I got one of these sets for my (now grown) kids for Christmas and we played the heck out of it for years! Such great memories watching this video. 😀
i got this when i was 4 for my birthday, remember it really well, was really fun
I share a lot of the nostalgia for this set. I remember having this as a kid growing up and loved every bit of it.

I had this set growing up and I loved it! Sparked up a lot of my own lego stories that came up due to this set
That blue 1x2 printed computer console piece in the cockpit originally came in the Ice Planet 2002 theme.
I always wanted this set back in the day. This was one of those that was just a tad expensive for my parents to buy or bad timing in saving xmas and birthday money. Such a cool set! I’m lovin the throwback reviews again.

Just a bit of extra trivia. Seaweed commonly grows to 100m, and has been found as deep as 350m.

Fun set! Remember playing with it at a friends place.
One my favorite sets to play with as a kid. I think I still have all of the pieces in random places.
It’s actually such a good set yet it’s from quite a while ago! I really like the design and colours as well as the sea creatures! :D
This set is awesome! My first set as a kid (I am now in my "dark age" as you were) was the rock Raiders set 4980. I always wanted these underwater sets, but only ever got one in the christmas lotto in my childhood. Awesome vid!
Yes! One of my childhood defining sets next to the 6090 castle. Great set, great playset, great scene.
I remember as a kid, this is the set my eyes would always go to. There was this one brochure we had that had this kit in it and I always stared at it. I was so curious to see exactly what the interior of the sub and base was.

But this one is quite interesting, the huge number of underwater animals is not common anymore in today's sets, it would cost way too much I think! But I like the feature that separates the underwater base in 2, that's really cool, and thanks for showing this set, Jang!
