Very sad news about the Zig Zag. With the latest December fires in 2019, The reopening that was to happen in October that never happened is now put back many years. This railway seems cursed in so many ways. The NSW government handed over a lot of money to the railway and I guess much of that money will be used to rebuild after the new fire damage. The pictures I see online of the fire damage look bad. It's shocking to see. For the last 10 years I have had railway friends say to me the Zig Zag will be running in a year. It's the longest year in history. I really do now wonder if the Zig Zag can ever recover, it's had an incredibly bad run of disasters over many years now.
Well there’s hope. The zig zag railway has gotten safety checks done with it and completed them and will be happily reopening very soon. In fact it could reopen in a few weeks
Thanks for the upload of your video. On my honeymoon in 1971 we drove our car along the rail bed to the bottom station - the track had been taken up many years before. In the 1980's, when on holiday with our family, we took the train down to bottom station - the children took turns on the footplate with the driver. A great railway!! Rivals our Puffing Billy, but at least Puffing Billy is running. Hope you get back on your feet and run this great attraction.
I totally agree with you! I live in the Blue Mountains and it has been far far to long since the trains have run and I'm starting to think that they never will.
I remember the zig zag railway SO MANY AWESOME MEMORIES I once got to go in the driver cab and toot the whistle I love that place, to bad it burnt to a bushfire
"They Say When The Moon Is Full, By Passers Say That A Loud Whistle can be heard and The Little Blue Train is Seen Pulling Two Coaches To Clarence Station , But It Never Reaches The Platform"
I find it really sad and depressing that a beautiful railway like this is just been left to rust and decay away. Also, I didn't know it snowed in Australia.
If dumbass pricks would stop vandalizing the place and rolling stock, they would've recovered from the bush fire damage done a few years back and have it up and running again by now... Keeps being destroyed by a small minority of a**holes. Very sad and disappointing to see so many volunteers hard work destroyed over and over again...
May I say we have made great progress running our first train (Works train) a couple of weeks back now preperation at Clarence and Bottom points is well underway guys! Stay tuned on Facebook on the Zig Zag Railway page!
Here in New Jersey, we have a tourist railway called Cape May Seashore Lines. Their route to Cape May hasn't been used in a while. Tracks are in real bad shape. There are quite a few abandoned train lines in New Jersey. The one closest to me is the Jersey Central Southern Secondary. Service on that line stopped in 2005 after a freight stop on the line discontinued rail service. The tracks there seem to be cleaned up every once in a while, not sure why. Those tracks also would have gone right behind my house at some point, but they were ripped up and turned into a walking trail.
This reminds me of our Saluda Grade in Saluda, North Carolina. Steepest mainline grade in North America. I think it was abandoned in the early 2000s, but all of the tracks are still around.
Good News Leo! A few days ago the restoration team did some work on Clarence station! They touched up on paint on the station building and lamps, and did a few other things around the station!
Why cant there be a community working bee organised with volunteers ? Please do whatever you can to get this enterprise up and running again for future generations to enjoy
Apparently some sources state that the railroad will return late 2019 (as of 2016 there's limited operations on the Zig Zag including track work and train testing)
Very interesting video. It's just baffling and sad to see great buildings and such like this just abandoned and not put to good use. Anyways great vid as always Leo.
I'm hoping some very wealthy rail fan see's my videos about the Zig Zag decay and they can throw a spare $20.000.000 at it to make it run. Yes I said $20 MILLION. To restore the Hydro Majestic Hotel that cost $30 Million dollars and there was a $11 Million extra cost to buy the property. So $20 Million is fairly cheap, but that's what's needed here. The Federal Government threw a spare $16 million at a Cadbury chocolate factory tour, so I can't see the problem throwing $20 Million at the Zig Zag.
My campaign are the videos I make about this railway. Sooner or later the Government here in Oz will wake up and help this major tourist railway. The Zig Zag also need to do whatever they can to make money. As I said last year a simple coffee shop rest area at Clarence is a start.
That shot walking up to the abandoned tunnel was stunning, very eerie but beautifully frozen in time, just as you mentioned. It really is such a shame why the railway isn't being revamped and repaired. Seeing disused railway lines is very saddening to see indeed but it does heighten the sense of adventure and spookiness. Overall, I feel unfortunately the line will probably remain closed, due to the incredibly corroded look of the rails, station etc. They should have repaired it when it was just losing newness, but I feel the excuse now would be, it is too expensive and far too rusted to repair. But you never know, maybe someone will realise the value of the railway and come to the rescue. :)
Such a sad thing that a traditional railway is being overlooked by the government for private chocolate factory tours and hotels. The place could be a lovely attraction and is a beautiful place. Would love to see some steamies back up and running eventually.
You should build a tiny 3 or four person motroised cart, a motor with wheels and a plank, you can find many videos on RUclips, and then take the track down to the bottom station. I see people travel abandon lines with these pretty often on RUclips. It would certainly be an interesting video to document on RUclips.
very sad leo I hope this railway gets back up and running soon I live in Chicago Illinois and we have a really good railway museum I could send you some pictures from the times me and my family have gone
over here in oregon we have a railway thats like the zig zag its called the port of tillamook bay railroad it hasent benn used since a major storm in 2007
i have a question i have seen new video's of the zig zag railway of it in use but not at the station are there services again? hope you can get me more in side on it and will you be making more video's a bout it?
Will you ever go back there? They've done a shitload of work on the place (and have added some overnight sleeping cabin and some other things along while the railway is getting fixed).
Might be time to go up again Leo, mid 2022 and they'll be open if it keeps running smoothly. They have a steam loco and a diesel loco along with carriages ready to go. And the 3.2 million dollar car park is just about finished.
I was just reading on the wiki ( I know its not the best source but I am rolling with it) it sounds like they started doing track repairs the same year this was filmed. They are hoping to return to service in 2018 but I am not holding my breath. Still its a somewhat good sign that tracks are being worked on.
Wow, pretty sad and lonely, i really do hope it gets saved, even tho im not that much of a train fan, im thinking about those people who love trains! Also, Leo, what happend to darkside videos? Also, the Cars Collection 3? Did these series end?
But you must remember Leo that they might be working on brand new trains somewhere else so it might have to take more than several years. But trust me, it will be up and running for you to see at some point
if only one day... they will revive this place... and revive one of the old steamies and try running the train through the place and giving the railroad some of the classic magic once more... if only...
there is also an old burnt out mini steam train display not far from clarence station. it was my uncles but it burnt in the fire. when you keep going past clarence station you will see the entrance to the tunnel and across from that there is a gate that says keep out but just go under the fence. i would love to see a video on it to see the damage
this is kind of like what happened to the east broad top railroad a couple of years ago, the friends of the east broad top and and the family that owns the railroad couldn't come to an agreement.
i went there two years ago and it felt like exploring a WW2 base and then a month ago i came back to see it again and i have seen a utility vehicle perhaps they are rebuilding it
Never rode on this when I over there in the eighties as far too busy with work, admired the viaducts tho and such a shame its going to pot, over here in the UK heritage railways are springing up like weeds and proving very successful so here's hoping :)
Ya know here in the states the great smoky mountains railroad 1702 a usatc s160 built in 1942 was supposed to pull her first train a 10:30 am today but she ran a hot box because a mechanical lubricator failed and her first train has been moved to Sunday if her test run goes good tomorrow
I think one reason why they haven't gotten the ZigZag up and running is because it's Narrow Gauge, not standard gauge, so they have to buy rare, hard to find locomotives and rolling stock which aren't in NSW (Tasmania, Queensland and some other states have had narrow gauge railways, thats where they got all their current rolling stock) so it costs a lot of money to buy them and get the delivered. They do have a diesel locomotive at the shed but the wheels on it aren't very good so it can not pull trains the whole length of the ZigZag. -Lettuce
Dude My dad works on steam train hear yesterday thy were working on the tracks and they were replacing the sleepers I loved the days when I was six I used to ride in the front by the way my dad was a driver and coal shoveler now I'm like 11
According to the Zig Zag Railway website they hope to be up and running again by next year. I hope to see this line get back on it's feet, it looks like a lovely little line :)
+leokimvideo I'll go up there and try and help as much as I can and plus I'm really good working hey the only reason I'm doing this it's sad to see wish it would go back to when it was young
Please Leo and everyone else reading this check out the Facebook Page on the Zig Zag Railway as we have made lots of progress over the past 2 months! We are not dead just not running passenger trains!

It's pretty sad that the bushfires are happening but I'm pretty sure that will reopen bc it has history
I have so many good memories of this place, rly sad
leokimvideo great news they will be re opening in late 2021 and locos are slowly arriving at the railway currently
Sae
Well there’s hope. The zig zag railway has gotten safety checks done with it and completed them and will be happily reopening very soon. In fact it could reopen in a few weeks

The coffee shop would be a fantastic idea and a great way for them to raise some funds.
Yes I made that suggestion last year, possibly a little too simple to do.
I remember the zig zag railway
SO MANY AWESOME MEMORIES
I once got to go in the driver cab and toot the whistle
I love that place, to bad it burnt to a bushfire
I remember when I went on the zig zag when I was little hopefully they get it up and running soon those dam bushfires
my god... I remember going here with my grandparents as a child... You've made so many memories come back
"They Say When The Moon Is Full, By Passers Say That A Loud Whistle can be heard and The Little Blue Train is Seen Pulling Two Coaches To Clarence Station , But It Never Reaches The Platform"
Sounds like a great idea for a video
+leokimvideo haha thnx
+leokimvideo zig zag is coming back in 2017
Yeah, so is ABBA
wow cool idea reminds me of percy ghostly trick
I find it really sad and depressing that a beautiful railway like this is just been left to rust and decay away.
Also, I didn't know it snowed in Australia.
It rarely snows at the Zig Zag, that was a very special day I'm glad I made the effort to see the Zig Zag FROZEN in time. Not #disney Frozen
leokimvideo They say that they hope to get the railway up and running again sometime next year.
Leo, I have great news. I checked online and it said that the Zig Zag Railway will be operational by 2018 which is next year.
Edward Dieffenbach well its 2018 and there is still no trains.
Even tho i live in the uk i wish this railway good luck.

The only time I have been to Australia I went on the Zig Zag in 2008 when I was 8 thankful my parents took me as it seems to be not opening soon
When you get enough money maybe you could fix up the zig zag Railway to its former glory
Mickey the rescue engine 95 um mate it costs about 15,000 dollars at least to fix a railway
Mehrdad Soleymani much more even
Why cant there be a community working bee organised with volunteers ? Please do whatever you can to get this enterprise up and running again for future generations to enjoy

The Zig Zag Railway. The Clayton's Railway, the Railway you have when you haven't got a railway.
Leo where did your daughter buy that megaman sweater!?!
www.zingpopculture.com.au/
It was NOT cheap, I get nothing for free there!
Leo, May I suggest you visit us Next year.
Such a sad thing that a traditional railway is being overlooked by the government for private chocolate factory tours and hotels. The place could be a lovely attraction and is a beautiful place. Would love to see some steamies back up and running eventually.
Leo you should revisit, the railway has re-opened
So very sad , I was volunteer there for 4 or 5 yrs ,love to be there again !

Mid winter there in Australia? Wow, its mid summer here in the U.S. Kind of crazy to think of considering it was 95 degrees today.

Leo, the latest Trackmaster sky high bridge jump has a thomas with a custom face!
It’s late August 2022 and they keep saying they are opening either “mid 2022” or “soon” but still no announced date.
Wow, pretty sad and lonely, i really do hope it gets saved, even tho im not that much of a train fan, im thinking about those people who love trains! Also, Leo, what happend to darkside videos? Also, the Cars Collection 3? Did these series end?
I think this is a beautiful railway and it should be put up and running. And most of the time in the London steam railways only last for a few years.
But you must remember Leo that they might be working on brand new trains somewhere else so it might have to take more than several years. But trust me, it will be up and running for you to see at some point
I see she likes mega man

They ran a section car the other week along the Zig Zag so they're slowly getting back on track to running trains properly again.
S-L-O-W-L-Y...thats an understatement. Scenic World was rebuilt in a few months.
zig zag railway back opening soon im from lithgow and your kids will see the trains, lithgow had a bad bushfires 2013
sad what's happening to some of these old tracks, similar thing is happening over here in England
It's comeing back!

I like what you say here, and I feel you have some very good points.
I saw them repairing the Clarence station today
They started working on Clarence station on the 16 July 2016 Leo and they had a few trains on it.
Look on their Facebook page
Dude My dad works on steam train hear yesterday thy were working on the tracks and they were replacing the sleepers I loved the days when I was six I used to ride in the front by the way my dad was a driver and coal shoveler now I'm like 11

Hope to be up and running again by next year..yeah been like that for several years now.
One can only hope someone gets their butts into gear and starts work.
The fence is being repaired bit by bit each weekend, come on up and lend a hand.
The yellow line has been repainted now btw.
I looked on the Wikipedia and in October 2013 they were going to get the line up and running but then storms and bushfires prevented that.
Bushfires were years ago now ;)
leokimvideo Yet they haven't even thought of trying to fix up the line.
Leo, I think you should volunteer on the Zig Zag to rebuild it! :D
RIP The Zig Zag Railway
your the best youtuber
We can hope... I do believe they ran their first train on the bottom section A few weeks back but at this point who knows :/
I highly suspect I will find the railway in the same state this time next year. It just has that sniff about it.
Well I'll have you know your wrong.
We did run our train at Bottom Points, our diesel loco works and we are doing track work and progressing quickly
If you care to revisit Clarence Station and make another video Leokvideo you will see that much progress has been made. A lot of other progress has been made on other areas of the railway too of which you do not have access. Not being a member you are obviously not privy to the true picture. There is a lot running trains and it's not just a matter of lighting up a steam engine and taking off for Clarence. So, I think an update perhaps in consultation with the railway itself would be timely as would be a shame for people to get the impression that the railway will never open again. There is a public Facebook page if you would like to find out how you can assist?
i wish that was in NZ that sad the prob closed it down :(
Services are further temporarily suspended.
We hope to restart in 2017.

The GOOD NEWS:
The locomotives and carriages in the Depot shed are OK, if a bit singed
The big lathe, compressor room and the big boring machine are intact.
Bottom Points Station is OK, Signal Box, Old Bridge from Cooerwull, and station are OK.
The top station at Clarence is OK, as is the office there.
So, if you want to see some locomotives, the depot shed is your stop.
+leokimvideo Not to worry. They will be reopening. There are many volunteers working there regularly and smaller simple trains are running along the line. Just time.
It looks so so so different
the first video I saw was your Halloween 2012 the one with pumpkin Rusty
If I had the money, I would buy it and restore it to it's former glory.
STEAM HAS RETURNED TO THE ZIGZAG! 8/5/21
Please take a look who's at Clarence Station in this Google Maps link. I had a LOL moment.

6:30 it's the magic railway :D
Has the same disease the company that was doing the Barossa wine train line between gawler central in the north of Adelaide to the Barossa valley to tununda that’s been closed for years
I've always wanted to walk along railroad tracks!
Yes, there is something very nice about walking between the rails. It's a curious emotion when doing it.
+leokimvideo that's going on my bucket list...
down here in Victoria, there isn't a lot of abandoned railroads, just abandoned engines
+Riley Smith Same, but about tankers and boxcars in Mesa
+Bill Cipher The Good Guy interesting
5:45 um mate your meant to push the handle thing in while pulling the track switch
Hey Leo! Lego is planning to make a Lego Dimensions Sonic pack!
I wish they fixed that place back up
i wonder what happend to the rolling stock and the engines
what happened to all of the trains here can somebody explain it to me?
Also could you make a video of The 70th Anniversary Thomas the Tank or your son playing with it
The trash pack have returned and now called the Groceries gang
THOMAS IS REAL XD
The army were told not to use guns on the day of the fire because of a fire risk but well guess what happened
Decrepit and Dilapidated are also good words to describe the Zig Zag
I was there on the 13th and there seems to be a lot more work than when I was there in in 2013
Thats not what I saw, Clarence is looking trashed.
+leokimvideo Oh yeah Clarence is a mess but Bottom Points is looking cleaner
Bottom points are off limits to the public, Clarence is what everyone see's and stops to look at.
I remember wen zig zag was bissy i live in Australia 🇦🇺
awful. Seeing that place like a cinematic ghost town.
BRING BACK THE ZIG ZAG RAILWAY!
wait that white coach wasn't there
The trains have ALL bin scraped up
if I lived in Australia I would save the zigzag
Any updates of the railway
I can reassure you it is being reopened in 2019
Can you do down the bottom?
