Ice Fishing for Arctic Char in Alaska
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 окт 2024
- Winter in Alaska ensures a thick layer of ice on the local lakes, so we dust off our tackle and head outdoors to target a new species. With the right jig, patience, and a bit of luck, we both successfully catch an Arctic Char. After a chilly day spent on the ice, we take these beautiful fish back home and cook up a delicious meal.
We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure 😀

That shot of the auger through the ice was AMAZING!!!!❤
My thoughts as well, super cool!
I came to the comment section just because of that shot, great work! Merry Christmas.
Absolutely. I'd love to see more of those. Maybe of the fish being brought up.
Yes it sure was amazing, beautiful
Watched it over and over lol so cool
Seriously, that opening ice drilling shot was AWESOME!
I sure appreciate your excitement and enthusiasm! No matter if you're fishing or gardening or building something, or cooking!
When I came to the US, I craved seafood a lot since there wasn't as much of the variety I was used to in my childhood country. I specifically craved steamed fish dishes. They can be slathered in chili and spices, or in a refreshing mint sauce. So I always get excited watching you guys fishing and preparing different types of fish. The char is mellow and fatty so you might have enjoyed it salted and grilled instead. It has delicate skin that can crisp up beautifully, so if you ever want to give it another go you can try that. It's similar to salmon and trout so it can also be baked in a soy honey marinade.
I was thinking the same. The recipes I've seen look like it can take a lot of strong flavors. I saw a spinach butter sauce, lots of big flavours like chimichurri, teriyaki, and one with chorizo!
Char, also known as 'brook trout' is among some of the lowest table quality meat i know of, they decimate cutthroat populations, i would ordinarily consider them noxious weeds but they have a slightly above average sport quality and they can reach up to 30 pounds. Of course i'm biased, i don't like much freshwater fish at all but i get crazy cravings for seafood like you. i like cod and halibut and and crab and stuff quite a bit.
Where are u from? I know in Indonesia they have a variety of steamed fish dishes with chili.
Merry Christmas to the best YT channel! We are all so lucky to have a peek into your life. Thank you for sharing! Have a wonderful holiday season! ❤
Glad y’all could go out and have some fun after some difficult projects! Hope you have happy holidays ❤
I will go to Alaska soon it is calling me , thanksfor sharing!
I've been sick (cancer) and I was just thinking how much I would like to see a fishing episode with y'all! Takes my mind off of stuff. Thank you.
Hi Ann,
So, how are you now? Are you getting the standard treatment?
Sorry to hear you are sick.
Prayers for you.
It's so good to see you guys out fishing and I hope everything's going well with your transition into your new Homestead Merry Christmas to both of you
Amazing to see you trying out Kicking Horse Coffee! You guys are correct, it is a Canadian coffee brand created in Invermere, BC. 😊 The Three Sisters is named after a sequence of mountain peaks in Canmore, Alberta, three hours from my home town! It’s awesome to feel connected in little ways. 😊 Great video as always!
Three Sisters is the best ❤ Kick Ass would be #2. So much better than Tim’s and Starbucks.
So glad you both got arctic char!! Have wonderful Xmas and hope your New Year is everything you hope for. Safe holidays and a peaceful New Year for all your followers.
Thanks Jeanne, right back atcha!
That coffee is actually from the Canadian Rockies and the three sisters is a mountain range outside of Canmore, Alberta! Super cool they have that up in Alaska!
Thanks for sharing your journey and y’all’s adventurous nature and cooking your catch for us. I’m wishing for a Merry Christmas and the best New Year ever, much love to y’all. ❤️🎄👏❄️ Be well and safe and warm.
The chemistry between you guys is incredible. Power couple!
Thank y’all again for a fantastic fishing trip! Beautiful shot drilling thru the ice! Love y’all!
Y’all just make me smile! You get so excited about catching fish…love it! Merry Christmas from Texas!
I NEVER drive on ice. My father used to drive us on ice when I was a kid and it was terrifying to me.
Love the little fishing pole. The fish had such beautiful colors. Both of you looked so cold. Wishing the best for you both for the holiday season. I am sure the dogs were nice and warm staying at home.
Yeah that shot at the beginning, of you drilling the hole was AMAZING!
I love the variety of your adventures. I’m glad you both caught a Char. I love that you show us how you cook them in the same video.
Awesome, awesome video. Merry Christmas!
I know I’m not the first, but I have to say that the shot of the ice drilling was so beautiful 🧊
😂 Eric feeding the whole lake and then getting his behemoth char is everything!
I agree with the others, great videography! Always informative and entertaining. Thank you for sharing your lives with us.
I love that it's fishing time again. I'll never get bored of the fishing 🐟 video's
Glad you each caught an Arctic Char. Both fish looked great. Eric's frozen mustache brought back memories of the three winters I spent in Alaska. Great memories! Thanks for taking us along on this fishing adventure.
That took me back as well. In my late teens to early twenties, I would go on my long runs in the Anchorage area. 5-10 miles, at 10-20 below zero. When I got back my hair and eyelashes were completely frosted up. What a magical time and place.
c1970s.
So glad you guys are catching the fish and hopefully you catch a lot more this season
Hello Eric and Ariel, love your fishing videos. You guys usually catch nice size fish. I love the variety of baits that you try out. Stay warm, Grace from KY
looked like a great fishing trip!!! the camera work was awesome!! thanks for sharing with us & be safe!!!
Fabulous opening shot!! And nothing better than fresh caught fish no matter what kind☺ Happy holidays to you both, stay safe and be happy!! ❤
So excited! A new video!!! You guys are out early and making it happen.
That was nice to see what happens under the surface when making the hole. Those fish were long, & pretty. So good to see you both. Have a really good week.
This is my next undertaking since moving here to Alaska!
Congratulations you ! I love fresh fish . I often bake it and wrap with lettuce and fresh herb and dipping sauce . Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and all the best wishes ! Blessing all !
Such a fun trip!
I noticed a bit of a format change and I like it. The personal touches are so sweet. Just one thing. I seriously wanted to shush y'all while you're fishing. 🤣 My great grandfather instilled absolute silence while fishing with him and it totally carries over. LOL
Love your videos, been watching for over a year and I love the experiences you both bring to us.
Your cinematography is out of this world!!! The effort to get some of those shots does not go I noticed and is appreciated! ❤
Heeeere fishy fishy fishy!
💚 Wow, seeing that auger drill down through the ice is so cool! I totally understand about not driving your truck out on the ice..I just get nervous about walking on it...Beautiful fish you caught. Congrats on the Arctuc Char 💚
Hi. I follow your guys. Amazing and different. I love your videos and your guys positive energy. Make my Sunday night relax. My favorites cabin videos. And love your dogs. And the tundra. I have one. 2017 limited. I love it. Thanks for your videos. Merry Christmas. To you guys and your subscribers : R Milan
أنتم زوجين رائعين .. تحياتي من القاهره
I love watching all your videos !! Fishing is the most videos I love to watch . Merry Christmas 🎄
Congratulations y’all did great I was so excited when you both got one. Thank y’all for sharing this with us amazing. Love 💕 y’all! Happy holidays
Arielle and Eric - thanks for the great fun this year. Wishing you Merry Christmas and an even more exciting 2023.
One of my favorite past times is ice fishing. When I drive out onto the ice and you can hear the ice cracking I always say it making thicker ice.
I love it when Arielle catches a fish. Her whole being lights up! Until next time much love and Merry Christmas 💖
Glad that you were able to catch your lunch. I understand the excitement about catching fish. We were out in a boat fishing on a river years ago and I had hooked a good size bream and when it got off my hook I came so close to jumping into the river after that joker!!! Ohh yes I wanted to make sure that I made mention of the coffee brewing and cooking the fish!! Thoroughly enjoyed! Thank you. I hope that y'all have a merry Christmas. I pray for y'all for your safety and your health. Take care Eric and Ariel ❤️✝️
please kill the fish immediately if you are going to keep it. you usually clip gills in your videos yes?. be explicit to your audience about methods. love your work!
Arielle & Eric can I ask how old are y'all??? Plz, I'm not being mean I've been watching your channel for a while and I just wanted to no do y'all get along all the time u seem like u do
Wow 2 great looking fish Happy to see that you both got one each man I love the way you cooked them looks so tasty Now I will have to run out and by some fish so My Lovely wife can cook them for me. Thanks for the great clips keep them coming they are Awesome I enjoy watching them.God Bless you both.
Awesome video! I am a big fan of your videos, and have been watching your content for years. I noticed that you didn't kill the arctic char immediately after capture. I understand the need for capturing video content, but would appreciate if you could take the animals life quickly and humanely after it is caught. I hope you can implement these humane efforts in the future.
I know driving on ice can be nerve-racking but it's about the ice quality more than anything. 10 -12 inches of good clear ice I'd drive on all day. Just don't go too fast and don't drive near the shore.
That really was a great video. I love fishing for trout and the season is open. But I am battling covid. Ugh...Merry Christmas you two!!
Ohhh, hope your feeling better soon.
Get well soon! 🎄♥️🎄
God bless you all. So much is going on in my life as I'm sure it is in your life too. I had to come home from Alaska, Worked at Chena Hot Springs, and have battled with my health issues since. I TRULY appreciate you all. I just love these two!!!!!!!! I live viciously through them. Please share and support them. I can wait to watch all the new videos coming up!
Gagardengirl
Kicking Horse is great coffee, from British Columbia
This trip sure looked cold. Brrr! Coffee never looked better. Thanks for including us in your adventures.
Thanks for all the great adventures you’re taking us along with you!
I’ve loved Alaska my whole life and wished I moved there earlier in life.
So thx for letting me live through you in my favorite state!
I'm so glad you got your wood stove up and going, it was -22 degrees at 800 pm tonight, but it's slowly warming up. you and the puppies stay warm. my phone weather is set up for Arlington and Willow, we have snow down here as well, had to put the snow tires on and maybe changing the oil tomorrow. the tile came out awesome, I've never seen someone work it from the top down, but it worked out very well and the new Lazor really helped, great job once again!
I love trying out new kinds of fish that I've never had before
But You got FISH more than 2 bigger size ones !!! That was awesome !!! That does look like salmon for that one fish !!! Man I can smell it from here and taste them feel them OH OH LORDY SAKES I LOVE MY FISH !!!
Baltimore Aquarium did a segment on sustainable seafood and the Arctic Char was used as a substitute for Salmon. Top chefs came in and presented their recipes: Filets, tartare, chowder, etc - it was all amazing. No one fried the Arctic Char though. I think whatever you are doing with Salmon, try it with the Arctic Char.
Eric measures the French press coffee so precisely, just like I do. Lol
You guys need to try fish patties. I grew up eating salmon patties, mom only used canned because that's what we had. Once she had fresh salmon and they were amazing. Mom passed over 10 years ago, and I started making fresh salmon patties about 15 years before that... do mom did get to enjoy fresh ones more often than our entire childhood. I've been making them and tweaking the ingredients since I had them first. Great way to mix it up. My brother came back from Florida with fresh fish not even 12 hours out of the ocean last weekend, I did the same. Awesome!!!
From your expressions, I think that fish tasted terrible?
Eric: "It's cold in here... it's only 67°."
Me: "Hmm... that's warmer than I keep my house, and I'm nowhere near Alaska."
It's only 67° in my house when my AC won't get down to 66°. I want to move to Alaska, because I know it's good sleeping weather.
*Love your video and very impressed with how you farm in Alaska*
Ok that look at the end was just creepy! Lol Crazy kids! Happy you knocked a bucket list item off! Too bad it wasn't as amazing, taste-wise, as some of your other catches.
Such a short episode haha love watching y'all! Hope to see more soon
Wondering why you chose to cut your fish in such large thick pieces instead of filleting it
So excited to get to see you only 12 minutes after you posted!
Thank you, I so needed one of your videos! Merry Christmas!
Just received your new calander! The pics are amazing! Much thanks from the windy city!
Never drive anything out onto the ice that you are not willing to lose.
Thank you nice trip. Ariel has some warm looking clothes. Reminds me of what the army wore back in the 60’s. Glad y’all got out to do something fun and filling. Your Alaskan ice fishing skills have sure improved from your first excursion, congrats.
The Arctic Char is an ocean run Dolly Varden, just like Steele Heads are ocean run Trout. The Arctic Char and Steel Heads are known for their difficulty in catching them, good job catching those two fish they look great.
Arctic char is delicious. I used to sell it by telling people it tasted like salmon but without the aftertaste, which is the number one complaint people have about salmon.
Good job! I hope you both have a very Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year🌲
I love your videos! Thank you for sharing ❤!
The camera shot under water was epic.*And then I read the comments below. Yeah, you guys nailed that.
Congratulations on the Arctic Char. They are also on my bucket list. You guys crack me up....while Eric is putting some shrimp in the hole...Arielle, You're feeding the whole lake.....Lol I tried researching why the two would be so different in meat color but I couldn't find anything. It did say, however, that they are a very healthy fish to eat. Merry Christmas to you both and your furry and feathered clan!
Glad you have lakes without bears. Fishing on the Tanana brought out the bears when we were Chachagua. 😁
Nothing beats enjoying the catch of the day good job, and Merry Christmas to you
Good job! The two fish currently at the top of my bucket list are Arctic Char and Burbot. Thanks for the video!
You certainly deserve a break from the heavy projects you had going. Congratulations for the great catches! Merry Christmas!!! 🎁
Filet them and dust with flour salt and pepper, then pan fry.
Great video ! For some reason the char I think look somewhat primitive like a sturgeon 🤔 the spots and the shape of the head… just imo is all… sure looked like fun but cold .. Happy Holidays to you and the boys and kitty
Those are some beautiful looking fish. Never had the pleasure of catching one myself, had no idea they'd look so phenomenal.
I love the ice fishing episodes! Gets me so excited for when our lakes freeze up enough so we can go 😁😁
Outstanding creative opening videography!
What an awesome catch of Arctic Char, which is an truly awesome food source.
I wonder if you every catch or see Crayfish in Alaska's water bodies?
Your very smart, safety oriented to avoid driving on Ice. I have driven on the Baltic Sea from mainland Estonia to Muhu island and it's a nerve racking potentially dangerous journey,
i live by NYC and im constantly telling my partner that i want to live like you guys in alaska lol! love the content always.
This video was a nice little treat to wrap up the weekend!
So good.
One of the better and more interesting channels on You Tube than the rest . Well filmed and the quality is first class 👍
Excellent shot drilling through the ice 💯
Glad to see you two getting some fishing in this winter in-between all of your other projects. As always, my spirit is immediately lifted when I see a notification for one of your videos. Thank you for sharing your adventures. Can't wait for the next one!
Love the video, enjoy doing those things till you are still young, and like always love your cooking. God bless you guys. Awesome family. Merry Christmas and all the blessings in the New Year.
Great video!! Thanks for sharing your life with all of us. Stay safe and warm. Merry Christmas! 🎄⛄🎅❄
amazing! ice fishing!I found it to be really cold. What was the temperature then?Your country is really interesting for me.
Amazing looking fish and look fun to catch. 👍
Great looking fish, hope y’all have a wonderful Christmas. Happy holidays.
Its so cool to watch the auger break through the ice. So amazing 👏
It’s good to see you, I missed you! Wow, what a shot under the ice, how do you do that?
Basically, it really is professional, but then that’s what you are with all your videos !
You know life is so good for you because you make it so that’s why I admire you and I have this love for you.
Congratulations for the
22 inches long shart or whatever…
So good to see you both again. Thank you.❤
I always look forward to seeing how many fish you catch ice fishing. I’ve never tasted arctic char but it did look like salmon when you cut inti it. Looking forward to your next fishing trip,so take care and be safe. Seeing this video just before xmas, i want wish you both a Very Merry Xmas and a Happy and healthy New Year.(Judy NB)🦈🇨🇦🌲🎅
These char have large heads and slender bodies. Typical of fish that don’t have a large forage base to prey on.
I have worn the white cold weather boots that Eric is wearing, and nothing compares to those for keeping your feet warm. I was in the army reserves and a few years in the regular army. We trained in the army reserves many times in Alaska mostly around Fairbanks area.
