I bought a rogue lap steel when I was a junior in high school in 2008. Unfortunately I didn’t have a lot of resources to help me learn and sold it but probably about to order another to learn on
My wife had her dad's 1936 Gibson lap steel returned to her a few years ago. It lived all but his college years in it's case, so it is in amazing shape. I am 'slowly' starting to learn it.
My mother loved Hawaiian music so when at 9 or 10, I showed an interest in playing guitar, she promptly signed me up for steel guitar lessons. I on the other hand was more interested in acoustic but what won't you do to make your mum happy. After 7 or 8 months of fairly steady progress, it was decided that I should graduate up to an electric steel unit. Somehow my mother found a used Fender lap steel with what looked like a Tweed tube amp for the sum of $35.00. After consistently and regularly murdering several of her favourite songs, she relented and the rest is history.

The really cool thing about C6 (CEGACE) tuning is it allows you to play major chords by muting the "A"-tuned string, and minor chords by muting the "G" tuned string up and down the neck, as well as 6th chords, and a variation on minor 7th (ACEG). If you know how to string pull, you can pull the A into a Bb to get a 7th chord-- so its really versatile. Or you could just play hawaiian chords up and down the neck.
I use Lighter Gauge strings cause I have Special Rail hammer Pickups & also a Magnesium Slide, The Tuning I use is a Minor Third above C6, it's Eb6 Terz Tuning (EbGBbCEbG).

I found one of these at the studio I frequent, and they've allowed me take it home for restoration! This video really helped for understanding what this instrument is supposed to do, and got me super excited to work on it!

Great playing! I bought a used Gretsch Electromatic a couple of years ago. Currently using open E tuning; my intonation is rubbish but it's a lot of fun. I'm informed more by David Gilmour than C&W music. Add overdrive, echo and reverb and let 'er rip!
It sounds so beautiful. Ben is an oustanding player and musician.
I love to play lap steel but very much in a rock/blues context. I have a Rogue RLS-1 and modded everything except for the body itself. I changed the tuners, the nut and bridge to raise the strings and to be able to extend the scale as far as the body would allow and installed a new fretboard. Then switched out all of the electronics. I installed an EMG S pickup with the SPC control in lieu of the tone pot and a new volume pot. I took what was a cheap guitar and turned it in to something special that now sounds spectacular!
BTW, I really wish Fender would start making lap steel guitars again. When it comes to lap steels, there’s nothing like a 50’s/60’s Deluxe/Stringmaster and it’s clones, like a Jedson or Aria.

4 or 5 years ago , these would regularly be on sale at the usual major internet music retailers for $79 USD .
Today in October 2023 , the World has turned upside down ..The poorly designed , cheaply made Rogue Lap Steel is actually being sold by all the major online internet sellers for $ 149 USD ! For $ 149 , plus the ( high quality ) conversion parts from. Georgeboards , you could buy a plethora of better quality Instruments .
10 minutes ago , Amazon had the far superior SX brand LS on sale for unbelievable $ 110 USD ! It's considered a top value at regular prices of $ 179 - 199 .

OG's might remember back in a by gone era when the Andertons video's used to be on Robs channel he highlighted a chap named Nelly Niel(NellySlideGuitar youtube channel) who used to busk in Brighton if I remember correctly before the covid. His channel has been quiet as of late but some killer lap steel playing videos on his channel to check out.

I came up with a tuning that is just for people like me who have no talent for playing any instrument.
It's just a 6-string Maj-min combo with 2 more strings on top and 2 more below. These added strings are tuned to a Reese Anderson style modification on both top and bottom.
The idea is to play one string at a time without getting confused, while also being able to emulate any sound you'd ever want to hear on steel guitar.
This 25" scale length 10-string tuning looks like this: (Read from bottom up)

The second column is the number of 1/2 note intervals between notes.
The F is very tight, the C is very loose and even tension between makes for an extreme fullness of tone.

I bought a Recording King with a P90 from Andertons. I’ve installed a Certano bender on it - the bender cost nearly as much as the guitar. Great fun with C6 tuning through a Boss Katana MkII. Next stop, a GFI pedal steel.

I'm an old time Country music artist. I love any lap steel that does Country music justice. As for Gold Tone. I own a Gold Tone 6 string banjo. Gold Tone is in Titusville, Florida. I lived next to the store/manufacturing plant for awhile. I lived in the place constantly.. I loved their Electric stand up basses and their electric fiddles. It was all too pricey for me so I opted for just the 6 string banjo.
Please keep making lap steel videos, and play more older Country.:~))))

Thanks for the video. I can't walk or play after 51 years of hanging out with the guitar. As my fingers are stiff and my cheekbones hurt I can't play. I know the lap steel principle and I love its sound (Pink Floyd and Gilmour big fan) I play open E and I have a processor and pedals. I chose my Japanese LP from 71 to start with until I make my lap steel. It's interesting to learn to play again. Long live music. I am 61 now and i interested for rock and guitar with 10y.Long time ey

I've been a guitar player for so many years now. Since I was 16 years old and I have always wanted to play the steel. So I finally took the plunge and bought one brand new. But for some reason I feel almost afraid of it 😕 Crazy I guess but here I am non the less. I wish I knew someone who could play and could be there in person to show me the ropes. I only hope I can get past this and finally be able to play. Please wish me luck 🙏.
I know this is an old thread, but I just started using the hybrid GBDF#AD tuning(Gmaj7) which gives a lot of options. I also have benders on the F# & A.

I’m a Gretsch fanboy as they say. Bought my first Gretsch over a decade ago. Easily the best quality guitar I’ve owned. Bought myself another one since and same again. When I can justify spending decent money on an instrument I’m definitely going for the Gretsch.
I have a nice 1949 Supro with brown finish. I've seen an Oahu-branded version of that model too.
I also have a lap steel from the late 1940's or early 50's. Mine is a Magnatone in green MOTS.

No. Lap steel is father of pedal steel.
Lap Steel was the father of the Console Steel Guitar . Freestanding , commonly with 8 strings ( sometimes 10 ) , commonly with multiple necks for different tunings . At least two , 3 fairly common , occasionally 4 .
They became unwieldy to reach the far necks . So when pedals first developed in early '50s , the original intent was to have only one neck , but by holding down the particular pedals , you could play different tunings for different songs .
It wasn't until the late '50s that the techniques evolved of using the pedals During a song as an effect .
So all of the steel guitar parts in the Western Swing and Hank Williams Sr Eras were actually Non Pedal Steel Guitars .
I've got a cheap, and I mean cheap lap steel which I bought to play Sleepwalk. Now get this for the tuning---low to high: D, E, G#, B, C#, E which I got from an old Guitarist magazine. I agree with you about the Gold Tone---best by a mile. I have a Gold Tone ukulele banjo which is superb so I'm not surprised.

I have a question. What is on Ben’s right hand fingernails.
Normally those would be finger(tip) picks for lap steel - almost indispensable for getting a good attack on the strings. Usually they wrap around the whole finger but those almost look like stick-on - over to you Ben?
Probably nail hardner. Note it's just in the fingerstyle hand, not the chording hand. Nothing to do with this instrument.

Can you give me an idea of the advantages of the one pick up over the other on this instrument please? I'm a Hawaiian / Western swing player predominantly and fancy the P90 might suit me better but it's hard to ignore a Humbucker. Thanks.

To modern electric guitarists , the Champion is comemorated for being the donor for what would become the Telecaster bridge pickup .
Back in the day , while the usual high quality and workmanship of a Fender , the design was very basic , bordering on generic .
Fender's line of upscale , innovative Steel Guitars were the Stringmaster series .
Which lapsteel would you suggest not limited to these for Pink floyd knowing dg uses an old gibson and fender deluxe 6

Can I tune E tuning or C6 strings to Dobro G (G, B, D, G, B, D.) tuning or do I need different strings? Thx!
Well so here is my question excluding the gold tone what would be a good lap steel to learn on? Now i am a complete beginner but love music. I am currently starting a build of one but i would at least like to be able to know how to tune it and try and play it without to much fiddling with it.
Not to be a smart alec . but any of them . ( And for that matter , Recording King and SX offer LS of the same general shape and configuration , influenced by the same vintage Gibson EH- 1xx family as the Gold Tone .)
The meaningful variables are Scale Length , and String Spacing ala Width at the Nut .
2 inch at Nut is typical , and the yardstick ( meterstick in metric land ? ) . This copies the earlier Dobros , and lends itself well to the usual playing techniques . The Gretsch is noticeably Narrow ( which can be easily mitigated for $10 ) . The modern Epiphone is noticeably Wider .
Scale Length is split into two camps dating back to the first Richenbacher Frying Pans :
21.5 to 23.5 inches . centered on 22.5 inch
25 inches .
Personal Preference . The cliches are the 22.5 - ish is more forgiving of extreme bar slants , without bar slipping out of your fingers , or spraining your wrist . 25 inch more forgiving of Intonation .
The real reason is that a number of Dobro players that also play steel ( me ! ) , want to have maximum of carry over of muscle memory.
2 pickup steels exist in expensive models , but 95% of players , 95% of the time do well with single pickup .
Vastly oversimplified - Single Coil gives traditional tones , and Humbuckers are well suited for overdriven rock and country rock . P-90 are versatile compromise , doing both reasonably well .
When in doubt , you can always add a dirt pedal to single coils , but you can't always get bright , articulate clean tones easily from HB .
Long before these instruments were called "lap steel", this type of guitar was called the Hawaiian steel guitar or Hawaiian guitar. There was music printed up and schools teaching Hawaiian steel guitar. The term "steel guitar", originated from the steel bar that is used to play this instrument.
There are Resonator Lap Steel Guitars too (aka Dobros) and you play them the same way too. You can actually use the same strings on them since both instruments use rather heavy gauge strings.
Well, not quite. I use phosphor-bronze strings on my dobros. Put them on an electric and the pickup doesn't read them. However, one can find actual steel strings for dobro.

Yes , Nickel strings do exist for Resonators. Yes , ( in G, D, E , and related tunings ) , they can be used both ways on Resos and 25 inch scale Lap Steels .
The tones on Reso's is significantly different from the typical Phosphor Bronze
Good sounds are subjective , and different instruments have different tonal characteristics .
But it would be conservative to say that 90 % of players , with 90 % of the instruments , 90 % of the time use Phosphor Bronze.
It really gets to be a balancing act for Resonators retrofitted with magnetic pickup .

I used to play a lap steel in college but now I just play any guitar as a LS
I have a LP Junior set up for slide, nut shim. And just sit it on my lap, or I can stand up. An LP Junior is a EXCELLENT slide or lap. You can just lay a towel on your leg, for the round neck. Or you could use a pillow or if your handy with tools, you could build yourself a lap cradle. Every single one in this demo is made in China. If thats a thing for you, as it is for me, get yourself an LP Jr or something and a nut shim. Go to town!
I would imagine the string spacing on that Gretch would be more natural for a guitar player that just wanted to have one around to do some occasional fill or lead work.
I've had one, and can confirm, that transition was very smooth. Also tuned it in Open-G, which also helped to feel more comfortable when switch between regular guitar and Lap Steel.
