I had this album 'Vienna' before I joined the Army in 1983, so it would have been around 1981. Personally I never was exposed to Ultravox with Jon Foxx, so I can't comment on those times. I do know that Midge Ure's first name is James (Jim), however there was already a Jim in the band. So James turned his shortened first name around to Mij, but that did not seem mystique enough, so it was amended to 'Midge'. To this day, Ultravox with Midge Ure is a favourite for me. Thank you for the video and reaction 🤩
This is from the Vienna album the first with Midge Ure who replaced John Foxx. My favorite track on the album. In 1980 , this sounded pretty fresh. Great synths & drums 🥁.
The album cover for Vienna was done by Brian Griffin who did my all-time favourite album cover Heaven Up Here for Echo & The Bunnymen in 1981 & won the UK 🇬🇧 equivalent of a Grammy for it. He was nominated for Vienna. Check his bio , it's impressive.
Great album and this song is a grower. It's the forgotten single from Vienna and I'd already bought the album before this came out and been to see them, prompting me to buy the 12" because 'The King's Lead Hat' was on the b-side! I actually really liked this song and saw it as a more conventional one in comparison with the rest of the album. If you want the most barking mad song, musically, from Vienna, then try listening to 'Western Promise' - don't think anybody else was trying to do that with synths at the time. Always good to play the whole of side 2 of Vienna as if it were a single track.
Thank you for doing this suggestion, it's always appreciated. I understand what you're saying about it, Cynthia, it's far less dramatic than other tracks on the Vienna album which can of course make it less interesting, this is a grower of a track.
This album, heralded the commercially successful period for Ultravox. Very radiio friendly pop tunes throughout....i much preferred the original Ultravox line up eith Jon Foxx as the front man.
Although ( as I've commented previously ) I prefer the John Foxx version of Ultravox, there was still a handful of Midge Ure period songs that I quite enjoyed .. This was one of them .. Nicely dark and atmospheric.
- Like Ultravox with or without John Foxx. - I have a song for you for same title, different song: "Passing Strangers" title track from Bobo In White Wooden Houses second album. They were (are) a pop/rock band from East Berlin, successful in the early 90s.
Were you aware that the drummer "Warren Cann" is a fellow countryman of yours? ps: Got to do Underpass (Live) by John Foxx! ruclips.net/video/PsXf0qXseqg/видео.html
Just a mediocre song for me, but it was a bit more special back then when there was not much of this style of music being played on the radio. Fade to Gray, off Vienna sold well in Australia at that time.
@@monaromark1021 Fade To Grey is Visage. That's Steve Strange's project with 2 members of Ultravox. It's on their record , not Vienna. Steve was the star of The Ashes To Ashes video.
Class Band !! Got this on Vynil somewhere !
Always loved the energy on this. First saw it on Diunds with Donnie Sutherland.
It’s on my party playlist

And of course went on to have a very successful second career playing ‘ Brian ‘ in Family Guy… 🤣
👍🏴
He also ran King's Lynn's speedway team for a while as a bit of a sidetrack.Passed away sadly.

Great track from a brilliant album....and of course Warren Cann is Canadian 🇨🇦🇨🇦
I like it. It reminds me of Heroes era Bowie.
@@delorangeade I'm sure the band likes that comparison. I know they all liked Low.
Preferred them with John Foxx, check out his song Underpass, it's way too good to ever be popular, the synth hook is mesmerising 🙂
I dont know this song, but really like it. All my muso friends hated this sort of thing, they were more into Frank Zappa, but i loved this genre.

I won' repeat my thoughts on Ultravox again but Interestingly, this was Produced by Conny Plank.

🙈🙉🙊 🏴✌️
I’ve never heard this before … and that’s a GOOD thing as it positively REEKS of album filler 😳
👍🏴
@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering It was the second single off the album. The title track was the third single & first hit.
@ well it didn’t do any business here David , I’d never heard it before .. which after hearing it here is a VERY good thing . 🤦♂️

Same in Australia- the album sold well after "Vienna" was released as the 3rd single?!
