Hi Kim! Wishing you a Happy New Year and enjoy your "bryndzové halušky"! Have you already visited Prague and seen the Infant Jesus of Prague (Santo Niño de Praga)? I think Filipinos are the biggest worshipers of the Infant Jesus of Prague. You can find it in the Carmelite Church of Our Lady of Victories in Malá Strana, Prague, Czech Republic. Do you know Ferdinand Blumentritt? He was the best friend of the Philippine national hero José Rizal. He was born in Prague and is buried in Litoměřice (Czech Rep.) where he also has a memorial. Just a little suggestion for your trips outside Slovakia. Greeting, Michal

@@ChasingKimberly You are welcome! By the way, I don't know if you're interested in history concerning the relations between the Philippines and former Czechoslovakia (of which Slovakia was a part) but I found a fascinating story about a group of 14 brave shoemakers who fought as volunteers alongside Filipinos and US defending the Philippines against the Japanese invasion in 1941 even if they didn’t have to. Seven of them were fallen in the battles. Although these men were almost forgotten in the Czech lands and in Slovakia, they are considered heroes in the Philippines and in the city of Tarlac there is a separate monument standing inside the Capas National Shrine commemorating their heroism.

Kim Hi and Happy New Year again. So you are real Slovenka.
Yes Bryndzove halusky is national food but mostly north of Slovakia.
Had friend from Spain and he loved halusky also.
Bryndza best tasting is made in May in old times before the EU they made much better and it was sharp testing, these days don't know, it's not the same.
I'm from Liptov so yes we know how to make them and of course best are made at home, never eat something bought frozen, sorry.
Cudos to Dano he can make them for you.
Combo you had at Spis salas is killer be honest.

Hi Kim, long time... As it was mentioned earlier, Dechtare used to be famous for halusky, but as people started to go there the service started to deteriorate rapidly, and it went so far that some people would never go back till today even theese things were happening something like 30 years ago. Maybe it is a shame, but it was like that. And in that era there was more similar places and people who were regular customers became friends with cooks (yes cooks those days was quite a few people working in the kitchens but only the best ones could call themselves a cook, not like today when everyone who does not set water on fire in the skillet is demanding title chef) And if cook left the motorest or restaurant for a different place, usually the waiters followed and so did the regular customers.... Similarly there used to be a motorest near Sliac and at some point there was a migration towards Neresnica.... And even it was a detour, we used to make that effort and go there for halusky. Unfortunately none of those places exist nowadays. Yes meal halusky it is a local fenomenon, and everyone is digesting it his own way 😉

Hello Kim, as for me, I also like halušky in Bratislava in the same restaurant, that you have mentioned. However, the best halušky are to be coocked at home. Incidentally, I made it today for the whole family and the best way is from potato milled in the kitchen machine (I am lazy, too and this saves my time) and with flour. It is not possible to say, how much flour you mix with potatos, because all potatoes are different. You have to see it and try always the dough in the boiling water if it is ready and has enough flour. But the result is worth it. And dont forget to buy a good bryndza. Never use a supermarket bryndza; if you have some Farmer shop nearby, it is always a better choice. Bryndza in supermarked is usually mixed with cow cheese and the taste of bryndza is different, the flavour is not so deep and salty.
So, bon apetit! (And, I know that I am perhaps too proud of my kitchen skills, but I also cook once a year pirohy filled with potatoes and bryndza filling and they are simply delicious! Never had something like this in restaurant, they simply have to cook quickly and the result is maybe good, but never perfect.)

As child I never ate bryndzové halušky, because my parents hate the taste. We usually ate potato halušky with eggs at the top, or any kind of different chees or Rajo kyslá smotana. I first tried bryndzové halušky at salaš príroda near Stupava, and I really liked the taste, I don't know if it was because I was pregnant, or my tastes has changed, or just because I never tasted bryndza before and thought like my parents, that bryndza doesn't taste good. But I like it, and the taste is like different sour cream, with something bitter in it.. maybe that's the thing that people think it may taste like vomit, but, it's actually really good taste, you just have to eat it fast, because if bryndza starts to get "older" it starts to taste more bitter=vomit-like...

the wallachian culture may have come from romania - but it has been so long ago that over the centuries (5 or 6??), halusky can be our national food - especially when our slovak bryndza is different from that of romania...

Word brânză (domesticated now as Bryndza in Slovakia) means cheese in Romanian.. It has nothing to do with the Bryndza type of cheese only..its word for all type of cheese. Bryndza kind of cheese was made in north Carpathian area (Slovak, Polish and some sources say also western Ukraine). By some chronicals the way and taste how its made has origin in Slovak region Liptov and southern area of Małopolskie vojvodeship in Poland. .this is the cradle of Bryndza how we know it today... if it was brought to this area by Valachs and naturalized by locals, noone knows...its "ancient" history...more or less, it tastes great and we just love it.. :-)
