    Big fan of your content, love the stuff you put out. I go over with my young junior golfer son quite often. How much does the different types of sand texture impact this shot? Obviously some courses have really nice powdery sand, whereas some other courses have what feels like dirt, also when it rains, the sand texture changes, how does this influence how hard you swing and where you enter the sand or does it at all?

    I have an excellent bunker shot, and although I visualize it differently, this video explains why it works. I imagine I am smacking the sand with my hand (instead of a club), hitting it hard enough to spray the sand all the way to the hole (that gives me the swing speed the video talks about). And I imagine hitting the sand so that I take a full handful of sand with the ball sitting on top (which is the same as the video talking about hitting 6" behind the ball). I'm so psyched for the snow to melt so I can try overlaying the instruction in this video on top of how I visualize it now.

    you are lucky to have good sand in your bunkers. We have wet hard packed bunkers at many courses in Asia.. Only option is to actually chip the ball out of the muck. Think baked mud for a surface or something slightly softer than concrete !

    Why not just not hit any sand but have less of a swing and speed - in other word just play it like any chip on the grass? I’m a beginner so don’t get why you have to hit it 5 inches behind and go Thru all the sand

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  3 года назад

      Margin of error. You're going to make contact with the ground even on chip shots. If you don't open up your wedge in the bunker and expose the bounce, the leading edge will start digging into the sand as soon as it makes contact with the sand. There are times where you'll want to vary how much you expose, like when you have bare lie in the bunker you'll be more successful only opening up the wedge a little bit, so it'll actually dig underneath the sand. Here is a great video that goes over this: ruclips.net/video/C4LijkfyjMo/видео.html - The only time you'll want to hit ball first out of a bunker is in fairway bunkers where you have clearance and are trying to make a full shot. Best of luck! Nate | TSG Instructor

    So swing with less speed if you don’t want it go far? What if you only need the ball to go like 4 feet and stop quickly?

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  3 года назад

      I wouldn't ever advocate less speed out of a bunker. Four feet and stop quickly takes some serious skill and practice. You would have to hit closer to the ball with a wide open face. You'd need lots of spin which requires lots of speed. Hopefully you don't run into this situation too often. Best of luck! Nate | TSG Instructor

    that tricked out golf cart looks like it's driven into the bunkers to hit bunker shots. Do you manage the distance of your bunker shots by adjusting the follow through? With the back swing staying the same with every shot?

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  4 года назад

      You control the distance with the speed/length of the swing and the amount of loft you're using.

      @@TopSpeedGolf Okay, that sounds standard. The reason I asked is I watched a video with Golf WIth Aimee where she said she always keeps her backswing the same, but thinks about the length of her follow through as her means of controlling distance with bunker shots. Perhaps that's just another means of controlling speed/length as you say. Moot point, in other words

    If you hit it an inch behind you just don’t swing so hard dummy lol Jason day literally hits It as close as he can to the ball to create more spin lol. 6 inches behind no way to control the spin as your second shot proved... It rolled way to much after landing.

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  3 года назад +1

      You are exactly right, you can get more spin by hitting closer to the ball. You have to have a lot of skill like Jason Day to do that. Unfortunately, I have seen too many amateurs blade it way over the green trying to get more spin. Taking more sand is a higher percentage play. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

    Good lesson, but it doesn't address the texture & dryness of the sand, and varying distances. Also, I was surprised to see you hit 6"-7" behind the ball. Typically it's more like 2'-4" in my location (NH) depending on distance & condition of the sand.

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  4 года назад

      You control distance like any other shot with speed and loft. You can also hit closer to the ball to make it go further but your margin for error gets smaller. If the sand is firmer then open the face a little less to allow the club to dig a little and hit closer to the ball. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

    • @TopSpeedGolf

      You control distance out of the bunker like any other other shot; loft and speed. The only difference is where you hit the sand in relationship to the ball also makes a big difference. Practice consistently hitting the sand 4-6 inches before the ball and you'll be able to control your distance easily with loft and speed. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

    • @TopSpeedGolf

      The 1:1 ratio applies to a shot in the fairway, meaning that if you swing 70mph the ball will go roughly 70 yards. With the sand Clay was hitting out of, swinging 70mph and hitting ~6" behind the ball made it go ~20 yards. Hope that makes sense. Best of luck! Nate | TSG Instructor

Esp. all the movement with the body, the straightening of the right leg etc. are imho a big source for mishits. Are hands higher than normal in bunker shots compared to the full swing?

      Lower. Helps you come in more shallow

    Great video but you forgot to explain the last part of the swing right after impact. It's not a normal golf swing as if you were on the fairway. The finish is how this shot is going to work right. Please explain that missing part where the rotation after impact is more circular and flatter. I may be exaggerating the concept with those words but the pros do it all the time. Thanks ....

      The finish is a result of doing all the other things Clay talked about correctly.

    How would we play a sand shot when the bunker sand is hard or hardly any sand ...?

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  5 лет назад

      You would play it the same way but hit closer to the ball. If it's really hard then you may want to not open the face up as much. This will allow the club it dig just a little. play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

    • @TopSpeedGolf

      I have not. They are typically used by those with lower club head speeds because it's easier to get the ball up in the air.

    Any tips for drop kicking the ball (open clubface, hard swing, club hits sand first, slides right into back of ball and blades it straight into the side of the bunker)? Sometimes closing the face helps, but then you hit it too fat, obviously. I'm playing a 56* with 12 bounce. Do you recommend a lower bounce?

    Should the same swing thoughts be applied for a 60 yd wedge shot in terms of arms and hips/body but with two key differences - open blade and hitting well behind the body? In my wedge shots, my arms are asleep but lower body are driving the engine...in your vid, seems to be the opposite. Also, hinging early is being promoted, yes?

    If I may give you an advice is the last part of your video is fully enough for us to comprehend the shot what you spoke in the first part until more than middle of the video was too confusing and not accessory at all so please keep it simple and not so many words the videos otherwise result too heavy and confusing

    Great tips, but here in Southern Nevada there are lots of courses with very compact sand- not the fluffy stuff. Very hard to be consistent in that stuff.

    So what do you do when you play at courses where the sand is hard?? Or maybe only about half an inch of soft sand and thick hard compact sand under it??

      Thanks for the reply Clay. I’ve started playing again after an 18 year break from the game and I’m now enthusiastically trying to catch up on so many changes to the game. Unless I’m mistaken (highly likely) I always used to stand with an open stance and clubhead open and swing out to in to slide under the ball. What’s very odd is that it used to work for me but now doesn’t - hence the reason for watching the video. Watching the pros out of bunkers does amaze me and I was obviously thinking that I was now doing something wrong. By the way I subscribed to your channel a while back and you have helped me in many ways get back to playing golf. Cheers.

    How do you suddenly hit 6 inches in front of the ball? You haven't explained what you change in your swing to do that. What makes the club bottom out suddenly 6 inches sooner?
