I am open currently but I am definitely going to try square with these great tips. I was always thrown off by having the face so open to the target but the way Rory explained it this totally makes sense! Thank you for the great content.
I could literally watch hours of Rory explaining different shots. What an amazing athlete and person he is. Thank you Rory for your time in this video.
Recently started watching golf. In no other sport have I seen pro's come on youtube channels and explain their technique so patiently and so well. Such an amazing humble person! (and so talented) Thanks for the lovely videos as always Andy/Pierce
I’m not going to lie - inconsistent bunker shots frustrated me A LOT. I was losing at least 3-6 shots per round the “old” way. After using this method, I’m on average 55% sand saves per round. Thanks guys, you’ve ticked one off my 2020 list!!!
Bucket list would be play a round w @rorymcilroy at any course of his choosing in Ireland, he seems like a real guy, love to see fame hasnt sniffed out his humility, Im a new fan! PS thank you for this, shot 78 last week and stayed in 2 bunkers!
This works!! I am really struggling with the sand of late. I watched this video twice last night and this morning went to practice sand shots. It seemed too good to be true, but executing these techniques - square-on, maintain good speed, Club face waaaay open, and really using the bounce 3-5 inches behind the ball, depending on the height and distance you want... I was blasting out of the bunker so much more consistently. Im actually excited to get practicing these even more now.
I started doing things this way last year (coaches suggestion) and had good success. One thing to note here that isn’t stated and Rory is doing, you have to lower the handle when you open the face or your in trouble.
I was taught to set up open and it has worked quite well for me. It wasn't until a couple of years ago I noticed the Pros were setting up square. Oddly enough I didn't hear anyone talking about this change until I came across your video today. I'll definitely be trying the square stance - Thanks for a great demonstration
@@meandmygolf. Thanks guys, the idea of it just came to me the other day and I thought this SURELY has to be a topic of interest for many of your followers...including me! :D
That ball/left heel line up works great in quality sand, not so much on the heavy/damp/muni track sand . There I think the ball position is a bit closer to center. The imagined 90 degree line in the sand from the ball position works for lining up the shaft just great, matches impact on a productive bunker shot. Thanks for the lesson.
I love all the videos with Rory! He has quickly become my favorite pro golfer. I say quickly, but then realize the video I like the most with him is the Hitting the Perfect Drive one and it was posted a little over 2 years ago...
Interesting that bit of knowledge, it is a really good point i never thought about. At the current moment I line up with the loft open, leading edge square to target line and cut across with my swing depending on how open my club face is. The point of the sand being in the way negating the effect of the leading edge and emphasising the direction of the club path for ball direction actually makes a lot of sense to me. Something for me to try this weekend at the practice bunker!
great content lads.... best bunker lesson i have seen is the one by pete cowen, promotes exactly what Rory is saying, square stance, aim slightly right allowing the bounce to do the work, weight into left knee with foot flared out, but most importantly he gives you the butterfly grip - strong left hand and weak right hand (for right handed golfer) this allows you to use the bounce correctly and come in shallow at impact creating that perfect sound you both noticed.. if you aim left and swing across the ball is not travelling forward is it? its spinning left to right and you have to swing so much harder.. also a great way to see the effect of this is to colour in one half of the ball with a red marker line it up and watch the way the ball comes out of the sand, if it rolls end over end you will see it very quickly offering you the best feedback...
Rory: Thanks, so gracious with your time and help. I struggle in the sand, but by comparison have a good sense of chipping, I know my pace and bounce. Yet can't work out of the trap. How are the swings similar and different ? I realize you've demonstrated the swing, could you offer a descriptive comparison. Thanks
I've actually never really considered using a more square stance. But I like the idea, and wouldn't be all that difficult given I tend to be more shallow and aggressive with the hips. I'm used to playing in more clay than sand here in Utah, but soft sand usually throws me off for a shot or two before I get things figured
Looking at the slow motion its wonderful to see that even the bunker shot is starting from the ground up, noticing his hips moving first to bring the hands down. Great video, i`ll be trying the lines in the set up. Thanks Guys and Rory
Superb lessons. I have no idea how to play bunker shots like that although l somehow manage to come out with less sand more often that not. Time to practise.
I've been using this type of method more recently and aiming right with the face open like that has really given me more consistency on getting a soft shot and reasonably accurate distance for my handicap and level of play. Great video, as usual!
Anytime I see these videos come up I just instantly click. Fantastic stuff. You only have to watch this to realise just how skilled a golfer Rory is. Thanks again for the upload 💪💪💪
Love the access you get to the taylormade team !! So good to see how the likes of Rory play each shot 👏 as I’m old school bunker play ,I’ll now be trying the new way as the noise seemed completely different 👍
This new method of bunker shot has been prevailing in pro tour for these 10 years. 'Open Club Face -Square Stance' is possible only in bunker shot, because club face does not contact the ball directly. Check Rory's stance when he hit lob shot with open club face. His body is aiming left.
Great stuff guys! So I’m a 90-100 casual golfer. Haven’t swung the clubs since last fall. Do you recommend any videos, or can you make one, for those of us heading back to the course in the spring? I personally struggle the most with slice and draw on my driver and high irons. Love this channel!! 🙋🏻♀️
Don't know if comment in Sept 2022 will still be read, but would like to see Rory's technique for wet sand, either from recent rain or from sprinklers. Many times the top thin layer will look dry but then underneath it is still wet. And can be dry around the edges of the bunker, but still wet in the middle that is lower. Am okay in dry sand, but wet sand drives me nuts.
Recent dry spell, soft sand, impossible to get firm stance, everything slipping as swing back, too much sand taken, ball stays in bunker. Love for Rory to demo solution to that. Grt vid.
Thoroughly enjoyed that - great work guys ! looks so easy Rory's method. Could you please do a video / instructions on position of club on top - struggle with flatter (more behind me ) or more on top instead ! Struggle with release clubs as I get stuck coming down. Thanks
I would usually hit it fat, re hit it from 3 feet behind the original hit, then blade it over the green on to the next Tee,pick up the ball and call it quits.
Many public courses have various sand in bunkers, even on the same 18 holes you may indeed come across 2-3 different sands. Often hard sand as well or dirt. The cost of sand is too high for many public and some country clubs as well, the maintenance is costly as well. The golf course architects love to throw 70-150 bunkers in the designs nonetheless.
This is all great when you are playing at a course that takes care of their bunkers and actually has a decent amount of sand in them. What about for the 90% of courses around me that are like playing off the cart path when you are in a bunker?
How do you set up to bunkers, OPEN or SQUARED? Comment down below and remember to hit the LIKE if you enjoyed the video!
square
Does this work in wet sand?
What's is the degree of bounce on the wedge of Rors
I am open currently but I am definitely going to try square with these great tips. I was always thrown off by having the face so open to the target but the way Rory explained it this totally makes sense! Thank you for the great content.
@@michaelmegson2425 Not as much Michael. We need to have the leading edge exposed more in wet sand so less open face will be better.
I prefer to just blade it over the green and then do the same on the way back from the rough back into the bunker, very consistent results

Rory is such a kind and generous man. Lots of bunker shots in this one and he's really patient.

Square....this video changed my bunker play enormously....thanks guys!
Rory is such a generous and humble person. Awesome.
I would usually try to slice across it as well, but now i'll be trying Rory's method.
Rory's a master at work. Love it.

I've been practicing this and I can tell you with a 15 handicap, I'm no longer afraid to get in the bunker..and saving strokes....Thank you Rory

He is Jacob! Great guy.
Rory is the best ambassador for golf. He's an extraordinary player, calm demeanor and very likeable.
What fabulous instruction,it also tells you that you don,t need to have a sand wedge in the bag,,brilliant, cheers

Wow, One of the best, most intuitive golf lessons I have seen on RUclips for ages. Big Thumbs up!
Agree Mark. Rory was so good. Loved every minute of this.

Thanks Aidan. Yes this was a bunker masterclass for sure!
I needed this before our golf trip in April. Thanks Rory, Piers, Andy.
Great Elroy! Glad this was useful
Hoping to try these tips this season fingers crossed corona goes away soon
Brilliant vid, thanks Rory. I'm going to use your technique next week. I find the old style setup very unpredictable for my skill level.

When are you guys doing a P Reed sand castle bunker lesson?
Absolutely need this! 🏌️
Great David.
Interesting. I always open my stance in the bunker. I’ll try closing it next time see how that works.
Let us know how it goes.
It depends distance to pin and the lie in the bunker, but mainly open.
Well done! Informative, entertaining and well presented. Keep up the good work!
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it!
One day, when he fancies retirement but to still be involved, Rory will be an excellent coach.
Nice video, will have to try the flared foot and the 70-30 when next on the course..!
Hope it helps Stephen.
Thx Rory!!!!
How do you adjust your weight, stance, ball position, swing plane etc when the lie is downhill, and/or uphill in the bunker?
Great, great video guys, love Rory. Question, the aiming to the right bucket shot, do you still have club face open? Thanks !
Yes Mark. Face wide open.
Rickie and Rory? Congrats!

So with the semi damp builders sand we often have here in the U.K. does this advice change ?
Damp sand play less bounce. Powdery sand play a higher bounce wedge.
Not sure we all get to play out of such perfect sand. What if you encounter very thin sand? How does this technique change?
I have a question? Do you change your grip on the club or do you use the same grip as for all irons? 🥰⛳️🏌️♀️
Great tips!
Can you do a bunker video where the bunkers are taller than 6 foot ! nearer 10 foot plus !!! Come to North Berwick West links and see what I mean
Great stuff - thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it.
Top class content lads 👌
Thanks Shane. Hope you enjoyed it.
What does he mean by releasing the club ? Do you loosen your grip on contact with the sand ?
Do you aim to make contact with the sand on a shot, by the same amount for every shot green side? And if so, how far behind the ball ?
A pro told me the trick is to put some of the sand on the green. Thas seems to work for me.
no mention of any grip change? thinking of Pete Cowan's butterfly grip seeing as Rory mentioned him
It didn't look like he changed his grip Peter. He just opened the face lots.
It all depends on the quality of sand. The fluffy stuff is alot easier to hit out of than the mud we get up here in the north
Totally agree.
Great tips, I’ll be headed to the range and see if I can improve!
Great. Hope this helps.
Nice one rory
I just keep my fingers crossed 😂
😂😂
It's a nightmare trying to hold a club with your fingers crossed Andy
What I would LOVE to know is Rory looking at the ball or a point in the sand? Key question surely?
It’s interesting that Rory explains that he wants to stand square, but actually his body is aligned slightly to the left.
This is all great when you are playing at a course that takes care of their bunkers and actually has a decent amount of sand in them. What about for the 90% of courses around me that are like playing off the cart path when you are in a bunker?
Kris Brann find another course with normal bunkers. And stop whining.
A slightly squarer face is needed in the wet sand to expose the leading edge.
I always land on the bunker wall, any tips for that?
