  • In this video I talk about the 2 times my Mavic 3 Crashed and how the obstacle avoidance failed to detect trees. It seems to be a pretty common thing if you search on youtube for Mavic 3 Crashes.

Glad you brought this up. Mine slammed into a large utility streetlight. Fell 30’ .. DJI directed me to a full page criteria of conditions for the vision system to work. Impossible for any limit to make a judgement call on every obstacle !!!

APAS stands for Advanced Pilot Assistance System. Notice how the words “automatic” and “avoidance” are missing. What the cause of this accident and the others is something called “Mode Confusion.” It’s what happens when a pilot doesn’t use a system in manner in which it was intended because of a misunderstanding. APAS was never intended to be a substitute for pilot skill and judgement. Of course, DJI’s advertising campaign is not been particularly clear about that point.

Enjoy the KC BBQ! I lived in the Carolinas and liked the BBQ but now live near Memphis and like it better. It seems each southern state has its own BBQ taste, but I like KC the best, South or not.
I am not a pro and I don't plan to fly near or into bare sticks. I will get closer to trees when they have leaves on the limbs. I did a dronie when I first got my M3 however and just missed some limbs by a few feet. It looks dramatic in the video, but scared me when it happened. I crashed my first drone, a Mavic Pro, but have had the Air 2 since it came out and have not crashed it... yet. I will probably use it for more risky shooting in the future.
Dumb question, did you have Bypass selected? I have played with mine after seeing all the crashes, and I have done so "carefully" and it slows when near something and then finds a way around. I'm wondering if your avoidance is even working... They will probably will send you a reconditioned drone but regardless, I would fly it sideways, front an rear to see what it does. You could even set it to stop rather than bypass just to see how sensitive it is. Mine seems to do very well, however again, when trying to get a shot, I will stop it before it gets close to anything until there are leaves again.

Adam, feel so sorry for what happened and wish you the best of luck with DJI support. I am an AIR 2S flyer and decided to wait for the M3 Pro. If the M3 had a single-lens camera, it would be lighter, be less prone to damage when accidentally dropping to the ground, fly even longer, and would be less expensive. I believe DJI needs to make lots of changes to make it more marketable. Greetings from Montreal, Canada.

thank you! i wonder when the M3 Pro will come out?? they M3 is a super good drone but it does have those weaknesses you mentioned. I still love my Air 2S and that’s now my back up and it’s probably my favorite drone I’ve had. I’ve had almost all of the DJI drones. Cheers from Kansas City!

Trees + Drone = Crash. Can't make it any more simple than that. This rule applies to all drones. It is also why you keep your eyes on your drone not just the controller. Personally I do not have the budget to take these kinds of risks on a 3 to 5 thousand dollar drone. I could buy a good used car for that.

Unfortunately there is no drone today that can avoid all kind obstacles, not even Skydio 2. So in almost all situations, related to obstacles, is all the drone operator fault, because the VLOS rule have a purpose behind it. I hope that you will get the replacement soon. Good luck!

@@AerialMotionPhotography Exactly. Skydio uses nvidia embedded system that is very capable for image processing, inferencing and AI. This allows them to implement complex algorithms. This is the only reason I can think of why DJI cannot match that. Their hardware probably isn't up to the task, so they are struggling with all the features they promised.
