Alternator noise

  • loud noise from the engine. Noise changes with engine speed. Okay, I am unplugging the alternator's connector that sends the signal to tell the alternator to charge. It is right above the AC compressor. Unplugging the connector turns off the alternator. (unloads power output to charge the battery) So, because it doesn't use the power to charge the battery while it is unplugged the noise goes away. When I plug the alternator back in, the noise comes back. Bad alternator.

    What a gem of a video. So had to find a 99 chrysler cirrus diagnosis video. Cheers gentlemen

    Thanks for the video. Someone told my wife at a Chic-fila drive thru her alternator was bad and I was trying to recall the symptoms. I checked and I don't hear any whining. I now recall on our 2004 Camry we had a bad alternator and it was making a very distinct whining sound like that.

    Thanks for the video. I ran an additional ground wire from one of the alternator mounting bolts to the strut tower and had one in the same spot on the strut tower like one on top of each other and a bolt going through and on the 2nd one it goes to the negative terminal on the battery. I have a few things with extra grounds. Could that have caused the bearing to go bad in the alternator?

    I have the exact same problem. When I remove alternator wire, noise goes away. But I believe it's bad diodes instead of bad bearings. I replaced front and rear bearings with SKF brand bearings but problem is still there. If it was bad bearing, you could hear the noise even after you disconnect the cable.

      Changing the alternator bearings is a tedious job. Congrats on that. Pressing the bearings and the pulley is no small job. you could try replacing the diode trio, or a bad diode, if you cam measure and see which one or ones are bad and see if the noise changes.
      when the electrical connector is unplugged you have taken the electrical load off the armature. So it takes the load off of the bearings. Yes, if the bearings are so bad that it makes noise even with the connector unplugged, you're lucky it hasn't froze up. You might be able to hear the bearing noise with the connector unplugged if you used a stethoscope. Maybe...
      something you could try is leave the drive belt off. leave the electrical connector off. spin the alternator by hand. Then plug in the connector and turn the key on. ENGINE NOT RUNNING. See if the alternator is harder to turn by hand. That's the electrical load that the electromagnets are trying to hold the armature in place.
      I have many vehicles that had bad alternators that were bad diodes. Measure AC voltage at the battery terminal. That's why we look at the diode ripple. A bad diode can cause ac voltage get back to the battery. It can also draw the battery down because the battery voltage will now flow backwards and ground through the alternator causing the battery to continually be dead after being left for a while.
      Anything is possible. I have seen so pretty unbelievable stuff. But bad bearings is a common problem when it's noise but everything else checks out ok.

      @@WarrenAutomotive Thanks for the reply. My car is a 2005 Renault Megane (I believe you don't have those at the other side of the pond). I was getting "low charging voltage" warning from ECU. Nothing on the dash tho. When I check the voltage, It was around 14 volt with everything turned off, but when I turn on every electronic on the car, It drops to 12.8 volts. Also there was a slight humming, coming from alternator. Battery seemed okay.
      Decided to rebuild the alternator since I can't afford new one. It was a hell of a job to remove it, I need to undo engine mount and drop engine on a jack just to remove the alternator. Anyways, bearings seemed okay, no harsh sound or anything, and the rotor was turning freely but slip ring and brushes was in a very bad condition. Too much wear on them.
      I replaced both bearings, slip rings and brushes. It took me 2 days because I don't have proper tools. I was being super cautious when installing new bearings, not the hit it from a wrong point etc.
      When I installed the alternator back to the car, It had exact same voltage readings with much louder humming (the same noise as your video). After like 5 minutes of engine running, alternator started to smoke and smell like burning electronics :( I believe there's something wrong with the diodes, which makes the alternator overload.
      Tomorrow I will test diodes or maybe I will take alternator to a specialist. I'm getting sick of this French garbage car and its electronic faults. If I could afford another car, I would roll this sucker out off a cliff. I will never buy another French car, I will stick with German or Japan cars.

    Yeon thank you I knew my p.o.s. Nissan Altima alternator was going out again . I was thinking it was the CVT transmission fluid needed to be changed or torque converter was out. Which it does need a converter but this is the sound I think I'm getting not so much the torque converter. Cause I fixed it before and it seemed to have went away. But being it's getting the salvage yard it's probably just gone bad again. I'm definitely going it's what it is. It does it after car warms up and especially once driving a good even small distance. But only once it's earned up and I been driving around a Lil bit

    but why you said is the alternator if you do something in the compressor? my car have the same sound today and i said ahh the power steering pump but then suddenly from the alternator area starting a lite smoke with smell like a plastic or somehing like that.. did you beleved its the bearing? because i pulls out the battery and the car still on

    • @WarrenAutomotive
      @WarrenAutomotive  4 года назад +3

      first, you should not take the battery connections off while the car is running. That could damage the regulator/alternator because there is no feedback to tell the regulator it doing it's job and it could overcharge the system resulting in damage to anything in the system. The noise is from the load on the alternator bearing. It is bad and allowing the alternator shaft to be a little crooked making the noise. That's why when I unplug it the load goes away and the alternator moves back to it's normal position and the noise goes away. Ia a general way of explaining it. If you suspect your alternator is making noise you can unplug the alternator of remove the belt and see if the noise is gone. Don't disconnect the battery. The alternator generally has three windings putting out voltage. if one winding stops working, or diodes goes bad, there are still two more putting out voltage.

    If you disconnect the wire going to alternator, as you are testing it wont trigger the check engine light? ? And how can you distinguish it from the whinning noise coming from automatic transmission oil pressure pump ??

    • @WarrenAutomotive
      @WarrenAutomotive  2 года назад +1

      If you leave the alternator disconnected too long you could get a charging code but a quick on and off will usually be okay and not send a code. If you do get a code for the charging system, you just clear the codes afterward. If the noise changes just with unplugging the input connector to the alternator then I don't think it's the trans

      For me I clearly heard that noise even when u remove the belt and turn it by hand. U can feel the grinding of particulates from the bearing. Idk about the wire stuff but if it's the bearing it should be leary evident by just hand spinning

    I have a same noise from my alternator, I can't rw produce with rotating pulley by hand, I tried removing alternator plug while engine is running, noise doesn't go away. What seems to be the problem.

    • @WarrenAutomotive
      @WarrenAutomotive  3 года назад

      On this car the load from the alternator being powered up caused the noise to get much louder. Maybe yours is so bad it makes the noise all the time. Or it could be that the noise is from something else. If you can get a mechanics stethoscope, you can listen to other sources and see where the noise is coming from. (they don't cost a lot)

    I have the same problem but my alternator is brand new could it be a pulley or should I replace the alternator?

    • @WarrenAutomotive
      @WarrenAutomotive  4 года назад

      the noise on this alternator is a bad bearing that under load will cause a terrible noise. If your alternator makes a noise like this, I would make a video with your phone and take it back to the place you bought it from. If you show them the video of the alternator making noise I am sure they will warranty it for you. Make sure the noise is coming from the alternator first though.

      Alternator bearings are bad. When the wires that allow the alternator to power up the load makes the bearings whine. when I unplug the wire connector the load stops and the noise goes away

    Did you find out what it was?

    • @WarrenAutomotive
      @WarrenAutomotive  5 лет назад +2

      yes, it was a bad alternator. the bearings are bad. The tension from the belt and the electrical load on the alternator are putting stress on the alternator's bearings and they are bad.
