I’ll be picking up a John Deere 1010 RU Tuesday with equipment. I know the 1020 is a little more popular, but I’m proud of being able to find an affordable John Deere.
The 4010/4020 were the first tractors that I worked on when I left school in 1968 when I was lucky to get an Apprenticeship as an Agricultural Engineer. The dealership was a small outfit run by a family in the south of the United Kingdom. What a great machine this tractor was. It certainly started my love for tractors and of course the John Deere range.
For Kyle Bass: Grew up on a Super M. Planting season I got to pull the 4 row roller behind the cotton planter with it. Stuck my arm through the spokes in the steering wheel once to throttle down and cross a water furrow and was lucky not to have it broken. Had a 69 Cadillac when I was about 14. It was a hand-me-down about 4 times over by the time I got it. Had a 472 under the hood. Never saw a 500 that could touch it. Thanks for helping me relive some of those times.
I have to respect the voting process altho I thot the R would have done better. We had/have some of these old JDs, you like each one for different reasons and I’m pretty certain an old D would pull the hind end out of any modern 2 wd 30 hp tractor
Great video and information. The 4020 is my favorite tractor. If John Deere had just built them with a "Sound Guard" it would have been nearly perfect.
@alec4950 alec4950 Not quite. I have had both. I still have the 4020. Neither one power shift. The 4020 dry clutch 8 forward 2 reverse Syncro- Range transmission. The 4230 hydraulic clutch 16 forward 6 reverse- quad range. Essentially the same transmission with a hydraulically shifted two speed ahead of it. They were also available with the Syncro-Range. Mine did not. The two speed was problematic for me. I tore out two of them. I replaced 1 clutch in the 4020. Much simpler and cheaper without hydraulics to leak inside. The 4020 also came standard with front PTO. Not so on the 4230. The 4230 was a lot more comfortable with a quiet climate controlled factory Sound Guard Cab and safer with rollover protection. For me the 4020 was a lot more economical to operate and easier to maintain. That is why kept the 4020 and traded the 4230 when I needed more horsepower.
Love my JD60 it's all original and has a story behind it. My grandpa and his brother told their dad to quit farming and enjoy retirement. Well he wasn't having any of that so he went down to the dealer and came back with the 60 telling them "you can't stop me from farming now"
I definitely think my subscribers did a fine job of picking the order of the top 10 list on the John Deere there are a couple that I'm surprisedwith him that didn't make it like the John Deere a I would think that would be on the list but it got voted out so also I was just saying I've watched several of your videos I like your style and I thought if you ever wanted to do a crossover between the two channels I would be game
Very cool it will be cool to do a crossover been thinking about doing that with some channel for a while now it should be good for both channels at some point we'll get a hold of each other here and come up with a plan
Loved the video. I knew the JD D would be on there. That and a Super M is on my bucket list. Huge 502 cubic inch engine. The big Cadillacs of the 70 had 500 V8 so the 2 pistons in the tractors were enormous!!!!!
Very interesting. Especially to some of us older retired farmers that grew up with those. I had personal experience with an AR, D, R, 730, 3020, 4020, 5010, 4520, and then newer than 1970 a 4440, 4450, 8970, and 9520.
I hear you, my dad was born in '48 in MI, my grandpa and he farmed about 60 tilleable acres with an A and an M, they milked cows, rose chickens, a few pigs, and a little cash crop, he still talks about it like pure heaven
We had 2 D's and an R up here on the farm in Alberta. When I was a kid we did nearly everything with them. I remember when Pa got the R. We thought it was a BIG tractor
I am a huge fan of 2 cylinder john deeres my father has owned several and i learned to drive on them. My grandfather farmed with a 720 and 730 diesel my father has owned an m an h a and b 50 520 60 620 420 and a 440ic also a 1010 which i like too one day i will own some too thanks for the popin jonny love!
This is an exellent channel... I'm not a farmer or a ranch hand, I worked with tractors (Hanomag, Deutz, Deere 730, Zanello in Argentina in the 80's.) Then I became an USAF mechanic... but for some reason I never lost the love for tractors. Now Can someone tell me WHY the John Deere tractors are so good? Even the Russian air force has some !! Is a status thing or they are really much better then the rest? Thanks. Cheers from Normandy !
The mighty M didn’t have live pto sir, And the 820 had a Deere built v4 pony motor same as the 720 and 730 . Just trying to help please don’t think I’m being a smarty pants lol
there's a couple books on John Deere and the tractor data page that need to be corrected then. apologize for any incorrect information just going with watch I found in research
Crazy D Equipment yes sir , completely understand , no need to apologize thought I’d help , been around 2 cyl tractors most of my life , great video !!!
Electric start 730 diesel also had a decompression ped just to the left of gear shift The pedal was used to manually opren the intake valves to relieve high compression drag on the starter motor
In the early 70d, we had a 4030, s 4630, and three 2020s (two were grove (orchard) models). 2020 was my favorite until we got the 2630, which was a beast.
Was there any doubt about the 4020. Try finding one today that isn't totally worn out. But, good job D. Can't wait for you to do the other makes Let's try the Allis Chalmers next.
There is a plenty not worn out. I got a 1965 row crop diesel which is going to get its 3rd engine overhaul and some attention to the synchro trans. It owes this farm nothing. Can not see it ever leaving.
I would love a comparison between top John Deere’s at the time and IH. Like a 806 and 4020. That would be a great list to see if it was done honestly. But I guess you could only do between a few years comparison. Problems on both comparison
The John Deere model D was scheduled to be discontinued in 1949, because it was replaced with the mode R. But because of popular demand by farmers, John Deere continued to build the D until 1953. The number one of the reason, why the demand for the D continued was because the R model was only offered in the diesel version. And back then, farmers were skeptical of Diesel tractors.
Would you have to know about the front load specs for the 4020? And if any of those front end loader hydraulic cylinders are Campatible with newer models
I used a 1010 to bore holes when I built corrals. I also used it to run the auger to put wheat in the bin. Not my favorite tractor but it was good at what it was capable of.
Keating Tractor in Liberal, KS is twenty miles from where I grew up in Hooker, OK. I was born in Liberal, and there was a John Deere dealership in Guymon, OK, which is also about twenty miles from Hooker on Highway 54. I didn’t know Keating had a tractor show. I need to ask my brother-in-law who still farms in Hooker.
liters?......... isn't this a video about American tractors made before 1970? No one ever bought one of these based on liters, they asked what size in CUBIC INCHES!
The 820,s had two different hp ratings. The early green dash model made 58 hp and the later black dash model made 69 hp. That is why the 830 was never tested at Nebraska because it was the same as the black dash 820. I have both and have put them both on the dyno.
We has a model G poppin johnny. It was used as a drawbar tractor by the government breaking in new ground. Spent a lot of time on a chisel plough. Started on gas and worked on power kerosine once it was hot. Had a six speed box but no hydraulics. When my father bought it in 1964 from the government by tender it had done 38,000 hours. My father owned it for a further 15 years. In that time it only needed the mag reconditioned, a front tyre(tricycle)and one day it broke a rocker adjuster. I think I also built a new straight exhaust pipe for it too. Would out pull a 55hp fordson super major diesel.
@@thomashostetter7052 Fraid so. If you exclude the diesel only ones, R, 80 thru 830, the spec books show all fuel option on the rest. By the end of their production runs, the option disappeared. So let's don't split hairs.

D my dad bought a new 4020 the first year they come out 1965 year model. From 1961 to 1964 john deere made the 2010 3010 4010 5010. From 1965 to 1970 john deere made 2020 3020 4020 5020. My first tractor was a 1968 5020. Add a turbo. Add about 25 to 30 horse power. Dad's 1970 5020 wheat land special with a turbo put the d y n o. At. 168 horse power!

Has John Deere made a tractor that compares to the 4020? I drove several tractor models in those days. 4020 was the smoothest handling by far.

You wont find any better pulling tractor pre-1960 then a 820. Those things lug foooorever.

I just recently bought a Model A that has sat for 15 years and got it running. It's a tough old beast. May have to restore it later down the road.
Don't think the pony starting motor on JD 820 was made by Wisconson ?
Hey D! How about talking Jr Mint into doing a top 10 lawn and garden tractor video with you?
The JD 60 never tested 57 hp. It tested 36 hp.
I didn't get a chance to read your comment before it was mysteriously deleted. I agree with your line-ups here. The older JDs were n are nice.

Right. It’s not correct. Not sure where that came from.
Very good job and the 4020 should have been number 1 simple it's extremely versatile
This was a pretty neat list and lots of good information. I shared this to our Facebook page because we deal with a lot of Farmers big and small.

There are a few books written by a man named JR Hobbs ,he knew John Deere tractors inside out , upside down 😊

You were misinformed on the hp for the JD 60. The 60 did not test anywhere near 57 hp. They tested 36 hp and 40 hp on the PTO.

All Gs were all-fuel engines.
See I have the last year prediction 52 A JD motor has never bin opened up 35hp on the pto it has never let me down.
