    Having Devin compare being an artist to a 'mental illness' is something I've always believed in my art as well. Ultimately, I believe that is why art is beautiful/tragic/moving: It allows us to be vulnerable and use our finite resources as human beings to illustrate the things unseen. Ironically, Devin is my favorite living male musician and Imogen Heap is my favorite female musician. Both represent a different energy entirely but still have a ton of common ground. If the two were to collaborate , I would explode into a mound of stardust and carbon particles.

    I'm only half way through this interview and it's already opened up so much in me in terms of associations. What Devin said in the beginning rings Korzybski's General semantics ("Map is not the territory"), then that notion of a connection between anxiety and creative process (Kazimierz Dąbrowski and his theory of "Positive disintegration"). Then the empathy (Carl Rogers for example). Then the creative process as a (compulsive way) of coping, which requires courage by the way (Rollo May and his "Courage to create". Vide P. K. Dick's Exegesis which was his way of coping. Then the Ellis' musturbation: 'I have to do it perfectly' vs the feedback loop(one has to make mistakes in order to move forward). Yes it feels like a kind of a counselling session, just shared with a public. Really enjoyed it👏👍👋

    This conversation just made me realize that among other things, the internet is one of the major things i use to run from my problems, instead of using it to find people with the same issues as me and to think, its Devin. When this ended it felt like 10 minutes went by. Ive always known that Devin would get it if i talked to him, but he went into places that ive never heard him go into on camera, and its so great. And here we are ....most of the world in Lockdown during the Covid 19 pandemic ..... How many of us had the insight to see that we couldn't possibly carry on" living" the way we were. My personal feeling that there is too much emphasis on "Mental Health" and many people feeling that there is something wrong with them just because they don't "fit" into what is perceived as "normal". Thank you, thank you for people who FEEL, who express themselves, who look for Truth, who question things, question Life.....Question their purpose or place in life....Look at the absolute wealth in Devin's music and sharing. I hope he realises his place in this time and the comfort and joy with people that appreciate him as a fellow human and as an artist, musician and writer. How his Truth has touched our lives in some way. Not only should we be thinking about and discussing the differences of men and women but we should also be questioning and speaking up for what is "Mental illness"..... if we were more open to receive the gifts that people who are sensitive and perceive things on a much deeper level we would be able to understand more about ourselves the natural process of our own personal evolution. From a shamanic point of view mental illness stems from a 'dis-ease' of the Spirit of a person. We need to understand more about the Spiritual self and integrate it, something the western world doesn't acknowledge, there simply isn't the framework for us to relate to this part of ourselves because much of it has been forgotten and lost. The baby tossed out with the bathwater so to speak, when organised religion came into being and the Natural Spiritual lives that were lived in harmony within Natures laws were condemned. People are told and believe there is something wrong with them, even people in history that are now considered as geniuses were considered to be mad or have mental Health issues and yet they too had something very valuable to offer Humanity. It takes courage to show up for Life.....its often a difficult journey, navigating oneself through the shit and illusion that we have found ourselves living in in this time. The only Truth is within the Heart, and using our personal gifts and skills to express what is felt in the way we feel is right for us and sharing our gifts with the world. ....Love is the only Law

    On a side note- At least to me personally when Devin was talking about empathy vs. Narcissism I don't think (and I'm not 100% sure though I could be completely wrong) that most narcissist's wouldn't be sensitive to other people's energy as intensely vs an Empath. That's just my opinion though. I believe that Devin is one of the most genuine people on the planet and if he was narcissistic I don't think he would come off as genuine and caring as he does. Jamie Gangel: "And for Frank Zappa?"
    Frank Zappa: "I don’t care."
    Frank's compulsion to his work was with him from beginning to end and had nothing to do with any ideas of legacy.

      @chickenbeek 4 года назад +1

      eh. he was being flippant because the interviewer pissed him off by asking that question. he was clearly annoyed, not ready to die and a bit angry about it. all human being want to be remembered. he didn't record and meticulously catalogue his entire legacy for no reason.

    • @whythatspreposterous
      @whythatspreposterous 4 года назад +4

      @@chickenbeek It was definitely not the first time he voiced this sentiment. Frank "I don't give a fuck if they remember me at all" Zappa was a ridiculously prolific workaholic and a (perhaps overly) shrewd businessman. He documented all of his creative output in order to be able to make money from it into the future, e.g. the releasing of live material etc in between his bigger projects. It was not with a grand vision that this would all be enshrined after his death. Joe Travers will tell you it wasn't exactly 'meticulously catalogued' as they are still discovering things in there that were just casually stashed in his vault with little regard for long-term preservation. Indeed, material has already been lost. I would never have remote confidence in a wildly absolute statement like, "all human being want to be remembered", but I do believe Frank was sincere each and every time he expressed his indifference to the idea of a posthumous legacy. Everyone will be forgotten.

      @@TheVoidwithChristina I just watched it again. I remember that stare really well. He doesn't seem as mad as i remember, but I still think it came from a place of annoyance and cynicism. But he turned it in typical Frank fashion into a parable upon those who he made fun of all his life. Again, the very fact that he recorded and catalogued and saved meticulously all of his works kind of shows that he wanted to be remembered. It's just human nature. But he liked to separate himself a lot from "normal" human nature, so it's just typical of the type of thing he would say.
      Also, if he really didn't want to be remembered, he probably would have told Gail, his wife or Dweezil, don't play my music, don't push it or sell it. I'm dead. My music dies with me. But it was total opposite of that. She said almost immediately that she would be the steward of Franks music and never let it or his memory die.
      And since she died Dweezil has also done the same. Maybe that was just their decision. But, i think it was a family affair. I think Frank absolutely hoped he would be remembered or at least his music would be. Which, is part of him hence... and ergo... blah blah blah

    I can always count on Devin providing really insightful comments about existential matters that are fundamental to understand ourselves, but are also extremely complex. I'm currently conflicted about that stuff; I'm nowadays convinced that, as physical beings, we can only understand reality (whatever that may be) through the limited scope of our senses. In that sense, our complex reasoning, whose origin I still can't believe is even possible for simple primates, probably has access to a more complex reality that anyway might escape our physical perception. If I started plunging into metaphysical considerations, I feel it's unlikely for us to reach something closer to "the truth", so it feels like a lifetime endeavor that can actually outlive us for eons. But again, I really don't know anything. I'm a physical being with electrical wiring that wants to process stuff beyond the physical. Are we, as humans, infused with thinking that belongs to a domain different from our own?
    Man, again, I just don't know anything.

We must all sacrifice a little and meet somewhere in the middle and understand we're not all going to be happy with the result, but maybe we'll live a little longer. Sorry for the rant. Needed to comment on that.

      I agree completely. I think one of the biggest issues in our insanely polarised world is the lack of awareness that we need a critical mass to make anything happen. People shout themselves hoarse trying to be right, rather than to do what's right. If people aren't working towards coming to a common place with people who they don't agree with, nothing changes! It can be punishing to watch. Hopefully we can learn how to do this as humans before some giant apocalyptic event forces us there.

    Thinking positive is just another of a million choices we have at any given time. It won't, "cure," feeling negative emotions, or thinking negative thoughts. It's almost irritating to hear people giving such simplistic advice, for something as complex as human emotions and thoughts, but it's just as irritating when people are dismissive and condescending towards any person , viewpoint, or advisement, that lets go of the need, or the attachmentb, to negativity. The belief that the normal default condition is unhappiness is a choice, just as much as the unhappiness itself.
    As for the topic of sex, I am extremely fortunate, and blessed, in that sex is not release it is connection, it is an opening of the most honest and deeply felt of anything and everything, that is a mutually loved and cherished opportunity to express all of this with my life companion, my best friend, my wife.
    Btw, having a true empathic sense is possible for any and all human beings, some of us just tend to choose to distance ourselves and shut ourselves off from a lot of these deeper human experiences, what some people mistakenly call higher levels of consciousness, when it has nothing to do with states or levels of consciousness, and can be felt very clearly in normal awakened consciousness that we all experience. Just the mere suggestion of a statement like I just made is often met with a certain percentage of people finding it interesting and worthy of further exploration, while another percentage of people tend to meet that statement with not only what comes across is irritation and having been insulted by some statement of such incredible stupidity that they must meet it with hostility, open hostility, anger, and hurl insults at anyone foolish enough to actually make such a ridiculous statement, and percentage of those people who find that day 2 true to the world that there is is the proper Outlook in the ridiculous statement just made must be shown to be ridiculous bye shoving that hostility towards the barrier of the ridiculous statement. Fortunately for the empath, just because you are able to be aware of another person's emotional condition or their irrational emotional response to a statement that was harmlessly made to make conversation, the empath doesn't have to care about that person's random emotional car wreck happening inside their mind as they are insulted by the ridiculous statement that has absolutely nothing to do with them personally.

    Her appearance gets commented on a lot, but this isn't to overshadow that she's also an amazing interviewer! Very few people ever manage to get such compelling stuff from subjects, seemingly effortlessly.

      think of it like this: when you're white and poor - well, at least you're not black and poor. then consider this: at least you're not a black and poor woman. that's privilege. it's not saying that you in particular have any kind of special advantage, but a general thing, where in multicultural societies, there is a group that experiences less discrimination by virtue of them occupying nearly all the positions of power. sure, life sucks for everyone, but it sucks in "special" ways for some.

    • @TheVoidwithChristina
      @TheVoidwithChristina  4 года назад +2

      Hey there, thanks for watching / the feedback. As far as that is concerned - I am completely unused to being asked questions in an interview, and interpreted what he was asking in the wrong manner. Usually I would cut something like that out, but this was an exercise in seeing how the full conversation would be received, as I know Dev has a devoted following. Because I feel super comfortable with him after three interviews over eight years, I accidentally talked about what I have been thinking about, rather than responding to what he asked - as I said, I'm not used to questions directed to me. I am no expert by any stretch of the imagination. I was just thinking about Cheney and waterboarding and Iraq, Obama and drones, our detention centres here where we have detained people without charge for years. What is happening in America with families at the border. What is happening in Syria, where innocent people no longer have homes. What is driving people out of their countries, and what we could do about it. The difference between people like Jeff B and the Gates family. As I said, I have no idea what I'm talking about on a deeper level, but I know the set up of the Geneva Convention which is meant to prevent these kind of things against humanity recently had its 70 year anniversary and it made me ponder what it was like after WW2 when people were tried in the Hague for crimes against humanity. Back when there was allegedly a system in place that held all our countries accountable. Sorry if it bothered you so much - it really wasn't intentional. As I said I appreciate you watching the whole thing, I work really hard on this stuff so whether you dig it or are pissed off, I appreciate you being here. Also, he pointedly said to me he'd rather talk about bigger stuff than just music. That's just the kind of person and artist he is.
