- In this video, I teach world renowned beatboxer Stitch' (Michael Gabriel Smith) the best breathing technique and how to expand his range. He teaches me, a Vocal Coach, how to do his famous polyphonic singing!

If we are meeting for the first time, HELLO GORGEOUS! I'm Lolli, a voice teacher and vocal anatomy nerd specialising in contemporary techniques. I have a degree in vocal performance, and I am studying for a masters degree in voice pedagogy. I sing aaaall the time! Pop, jazz, rock, metal, soul, Hindustani, Carnatic and I am constantly learning and practicing new vocal skills. I just bloody love singing. I feel like due to beatboxers learning weird sounds all the time, it makes them really quick at picking up and applying vocal techniques. Its kinda cool
not to go off on something without to much supporting evidence.
but a part of me wonders (personally, not attacking or anything because I have this) if a lotta beat boxers may (or its just me) be on the spectrum. being a spectrum, some get weird verbal tricks, a lot of us love to verbal stim, etc. A ton of people on the spectrum also have a weird ability of sound mimicry.
also being a spectrum, some people get the opposite. But ive always wondered and been curious if people on the spectrum are the goats of beat boxing and signing. Like myself, I didnt even find out I was on the spectrum, until I was 30. So it doesnt really change anything as an adult when you find out.
but perhaps it could be a potential therapy in kids we know are on the spectrum and that are encouraged to be goof and make weird sounds because it is quite helpful in self regulation for us.
once again, just a curious thought. this comment is in no way meant to attack or assume someone that hasnt been diag is on the spectrum.
@@TheMookie1590 Hello, i am a Beatboxer scince around 2015 and diagnosed with Autism. For me it is actually pretty easy to do a Polyphonic Technique with my Voice, i can do 5 different Basslines ( Vocal Techniques ) that use the Polyphonic Technique a d today i found out a Spot where i can " split my Voice " and humm with Polyphonic Voice.
These lessons are a treasure, I appreciate so much you sharing this wonderful vocal knowledge exchange between two brilliant people with us!

polyphonic is like a yodel vibrating, it’s easy to find it on the crack of between your chest voice and your falsetto, but if you need a higher note you need to transition it to the crack between mixed voice and falsetto, and since mixed voice is thinner it’s way harder to control

You are the first woman i've seen to unlock a subharmonic singing, or else, the throat bass! it's usually to loo for women to reach it, well done! the polyvoice i've reached is literally a falsetto subharmonic, but it's to high of a pitch for it to merge on a subharmonic ;) keep on going, this will easily show ploy progress :)

One tip for the poly voice (even though i only managed to do it for two day and then lost my placement...) what helps is to actually exhale A LOT of air... since you need to make it sound airy...
The thing that you did at the end of the video is just a way to find the crack... after that, you need to try to push as much air within the crack while tightening, not to the point of hearing the growl this much but enough to crack the voice
Edit: also, going from veryb high and lowering the note as if the note was falling helps to start to hear the poly voice or at least the effect behind it

I learnt how to sound like a duck by breathing in while saying 'quack' and I wonder if that's how they do it. Different show ideas... The use of vocals in esoteric religions, sound and meditation, neural pathways of sight and sound, sound in quantum physics... I think what you did at the end was most likely subharmonics rather than stitch's poly, tho they are very similar and related. From my own personal testing, I'm pretty sure poly voice can only be done in falsetto (or maybe I just wasn't able to do it in chest voice). Mostly from what I can hear, subharmonics (at least 1st subharmonic in chest voice) should only result in 3 notes all following the harmonic series, but poly voice should result in many more notes not in the harmonic series. If you correctly do poly it should already sound nearly identical to stitch's.

lovely one! very helpfull! I would say the Voice that u got is more where I´m lokating my Thoatbase :) The overnotes of the Poly are Much higher at least from what I´m hearing^^ sounds awesome though! u could out the Enel-base (throatbase variation) and Alienbase (Virbrationbase variation) next😬

I Think D-low would be perfect guess. He isnt naturally talentem singer. But he is a good kind of nerd and tries his best to learn. His singing improved unbelievably in last few years. Also he is good for views as he is one of the most relevant beatboxers and Beatbox youtubers

Check out Landmvrks, dude raps (in French), sings (kinda Chester’ish, has the whole range of screams and their are quite catchy and listenable. I would recommend the song Creature to start with. He is great live as well.

Hello Lolli, you mentioned in this Video at the End, if we know any Beatboxer who would be interested in Voice / Singing Lessons and i am pretty sure, that an South African Beatboxer, his Name on RUclips is Levels is interested in it, because i know him a bit and he told me, he'd like to take Singing Lessons, although he is pretty good already at singing.
And I'd like to take an Opportunity if it is possible, to have a Singing Lesson with you as well and maybe i could teach you some easy Beatboxing Sounds. ✌🏻😊
At the end (you hitting those low notes later on), i think you were tapping into the subharm register. I think heard a crack go down a 5th for a second which could be going for a 2:1 to a 3:1 ratio of vibration. Not sure the exact bits you are engaging but it could definitely be developed if there isnt any strain.

Someone on youtube said that poly voice is just throat bass in head voice and I was like wait I can do throat bass in head voice and that's how I learnt poly voice.
wat, that doesn't make any sense, throat bass uses the false folds, while poly doesn't. like, falsetto throat bass should make a completed different sound than poly, but if it led you to learning poly then good for you.

@@RijuChatterjee I'm a bit confused, Lolli says that she's using false folds in this case, but everything in my brain is telling me that isn't happening. While I'm not female, so I don't really know what the upper end of female throat bass sounds like, the only way I can produce a sound anywhere close to that is by using subharmonics (the true fold only not the false fold kind), and nothing that I can do with throat bass makes anywhere near a similar sound. I know very well what falsetto throat bass sounds like because I can do it comfortably, and it sounds nothing like poly or subharmonics. When I do poly, it sounds very similar to stitch's, and no matter what I do to the sound never really deviates from sounding like stitch's without just clearly being a different technique. idk, maybe this amalgamation of sounds that I don't understand led you to still learning poly correctly, or maybe you're doing the wrong sound. But if the sound sounds cool, then it sounds cool 👍
