Nice job on the binders of the old box sets. They were my gateway into gaming, and as you know the rules still hold up. IMO the companion and master rules are good to take some rules from or use OSE stuff. I recently did a flipthru review of the Basic and Expert set on my channel (married with gaming). I enjoy after action reports, but I get it
This is awesome man! Those sets were so epic. I remember being in first grade in ‘84 and wanting to improve my reading so that i could learn the red box set and play with the neighborhood fifth graders. Eventually they let me in and it was awesome! Would love to do what you did and feel that nostalgia. Kids dont have that nowadays.
Always fun to hear about BECMI! I keep browsing my BECMI books from my childhood now and then. Especially the red box. I was very excited when I got the C and M but I'm much more into the B and E level of play not caring too much for the complexity of the weapon mastery stuff etc. I have the Cyclop as well in pdf which is neat aside from the art. 😅
B/X has been my favorite thus far out of my hardcopies, but I'm looking to experience BECMI. I'll most likely get it in the RC form as it's the easiest to get in hardcopy ala Drive thru reprint since I don't have a printer handy to print out the booklets. Edit: As far as your "My D&D" comments, My original D&D was 4e. Nostalgia isn't what draws me to the OD&D/Basic variants, I just like how much fun I can have running them without mountains of rules getting in the way.
I briefly played d&d, red box and then I know for sure an ad&d version. Briefly played at high school but I didn't get into it then. It wasn't until seeing critical role, back when it started that I got back in. Initially 5e but for solo I've gravitated to simpler osr type systems
Thus far, my go-to game has been White Box, now with some rules from the Basic Expert's Wight Box game thrown in, though you bring up an interesting point about just playing the original games. I've been eyeing the OD&D books on DriveThruRPG for a bit, as well as Chainmail. Is there anything included in those books that would justify using the original books vs just using the retroclone?
I can't speak to OD&D (pamphlet) and chainmail as I don't have them but when it comes to BECMI and especially the Rules Cyclopedia, there is just so much more there to use beyond what BFRPG or WB have. Both of those are great games but I find myself wondering why I would ever use them when the RC gives me so much more.
@@AdventuresWithDice So, what you're saying is that it might be worth a shot just to see what's there? If it does have better resources or interesting mechanics in those books, then I might default to them. I know Wight Box has some interesting mechanics that set it apart from regular White Box and very good DM resources in the appendices, so that one, once I'm able to get it printed out will very likely take White Box's throne on my shelf. If the original set has some other cool stuff, then it'll likely take center stage for me, or at least see some incorporation into my games. Thanks for the insight, and for helping to fuel my RPG addic- I mean, passion.
great vid sire, our game is similar to olde swords in that we have the old school feel, but use stream lined more "modern" mechanics ... ish check us out if yer curious, enjoy all your videos, cheers
I'm intrigued
“Dope Notebooks” is a great way to describe what you created. Having them in the binder is how I use to keep my red and blue books.
I started to cut it in editing... But thought "nah, that's funny".
Love what you did with the binders. Reading over the red box stuff brought back memories for me too, especially the illustrations.
Yeah... The art was ...is Amazing!
The Creature Catalogue would be a good addition as well

Glad you enjoyed!
Hahaha. I felt the same thing about 2 years ago. Dug out my Red Box and ran a couple of games. Even ordered the POD Cyclopedia... freaking awesome.

Great stuff, Bro! Really looking forward to your long coverage of this! And like Myke says here as well, fantastic reprinting!! 👊🤓

What is the meaning of this 4:3 aspect ratio!
The meaning is... I forgot to change it before uploading. It is what it is now. lol
@@AdventuresWithDice Lol it's OK, I just felt like pointing it out.
