A series of unusual events or a combination of similar happenings may not be mere coincidence. Synchronicity is the meaningful coincidence or connection of events that can set the course of our life. They can guide us, warn us, and confirm us on our life’s path. Drawing on Jung’s concept of synchronicity-and combining insights from psychology and Buddhism-we explore how synchronicity, i.e., meaningful coincidences operate in our daily lives, in our intimate relationships, and in our creative endeavors.
David Richo, PhD, MFT, is a psychotherapist, teacher, workshop leader, and writer who works in Santa Barbara and San Francisco California. He combines Jungian, poetic, and mythic perspectives in his work with the intention of integrating the psychological and the spiritual. His books and workshops include attention to Buddhist and Christian spiritual practices.
Brother Jude Hill, SSF, PhD, IAAP has been an Episcopal Franciscan Friar in England and the United States for almost 40 years. He trained as an analyst in London with the Guild of Analytical Psychologists founded by Baroness Vera von der Heydt who was his tutor. He is an Associate Priest at the Church of the Advent of Christ the King in San Francisco and combines Analytical Psychology and Spirituality in his work as a priest, spiritual director and retreat conductor.
I've enjoyed this session a lot. At around an hour and 30 in, conversation about questions ~ living within the tension of the question ~ I am reminded of Rilke's statement from "Letters to a Young Poet": “Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.”

I once went on a vision quest.... into the night so to speak. It was a month long West coast style road trip combined with using the IChing, coin flipping and synchronicity to let flow determine which direction to go. As I wound around from place to place, I found myself in the middle of a desert valley. As I drove along, a jet fighter suddenly appeared out of no where and really surprised me. Because I was on a vision quest, I didn’t just ignore it. I took it in and pondered it. As I was pondering... I drove into this place where there were thousands (I’m not exaggerating) of storage bunkers in the ground. Then I saw a sign that said “US Army Depot” (it turned out to be Hawthorne military depot... the worlds largest munitions storage facility). At the time, it was all a bit overwhelming. I was amazed at all I was seeing and that we as a country felt the need to have all this at the ready. Then I took it the next step and went on to ponder my own life and the way I had my own little version of the same thing. I had inherited some rifles from my dad some years earlier and they were in my storage unit. One of them was even a war trophy (a North Korean infantry rifle) dad had brought home from the Korean conflict. It had definitely taken life. I decided then and there that this was the purpose of my vision quest and that I needed to change my inheritance and would put an end to them. The next day, I heard on the news that Mikhail Kalashnikov of the USSR (the creator of the AK-47 assault rifle) had died the same day as my vision. That was the kind of confirmation I needed to know I was on track as even the war trophy rifle had been made in the Soviet Union. Following this event and synchronicity, more synchronicities followed and I spent the next months learning to blacksmith and then turned the rifle into a garden plow modeled after the one I had used in my family garden as a boy. Then with a couple friends, we planted peas with it. I’d say this was the most fulfilling thing I’ve ever done. If I die tomorrow, I’m cool with it. At least I didn’t leave those behind for someone else to deal with or possibly die from. Another thing occurred though, as a byproduct of all that... That thing being... I see myself. I bear witness to myself. Self awareness continues to change my own evolution and... that has been hard because it brings up my weaknesses, but it has also been worth while. -------------------Good luck and synchronicities to everyone out there! Follow your conscience and put to rest the inheritances that no longer serve! You won’t regret it!

That is an amazing and most powerful synchronicity and insight. You are right: each person must get rid of their weapons but it goes even further. The glorification of violence on television and in the cinema must also stop because that whole confidence in, admiration for and trust in violence creates a communal consciousness of violence and not only destroys the individual and the country but ultimately this consciousness of violence is also what is killing the earth.

When I was in the 8th grade I was sitting in my health class when all of a sudden I started thinking about my grandfather. Nothing in particular, but I just started thinking about him like something out of the ordinary had happened. About an hour or two later my parents picked me up at school and told me that my grandfather had died that morning and that we needed get ready to travel out of town for the funeral. Apparently he died around the same time I was in my health class.
Two days ago i dreamt and earthquake, woke up with a feeling that was already happened, i was tired so i went back to sleep, maybe 20mins earthquake hit.
Before 6.4 earthquake in Croatia i dreamt that i was in a skyscraper, when it started swinging i felt it, but people around me werent noticing it. I could not figure out the dream until two big quakes hit and than some weeks i realized. I had that with a cousin house burning and some quakes after the big ones. Now i am starting to pay attention.

I had something similar happen. Haven’t confirmed it as far as time but still interesting.
I had this experience as well, I was thinking heavily about my grandfather in the early hours of the morning the night of his passing. Unknownst to me he last away at 3 o’clock (am) as I was told by my mother later that very day.

Hello, former SF dweller here (I have moved back to Europe due to “climate” change in California, among other factors). I have to say this was an extremely insightful conversation. I enjoyed listening from beginning to end, taking notes and soaking up the information. The topic of synchronicity and the work of Jung seem an inexhaustible well to draw from. I appreciated how the speakers wove into this topic the teachings from the Bible and how the participants shared from their personal lives. Very well rounded discussion. I wish I knew of your existence while still living in the neighborhood.
Thanks for the Beautiful talks and concepts; as a psychiatrist I see the process manifest itself in our lives all the time ... I like the beautiful Baha’i concept of ‘the breezes of Divine Confirmations” reaching us when in alignment.

Expanding your sense of self will deconstruct such concerns and have you loving others as they are.
Egocentric is westernism way of living. It teaches people to be selfish, and self-serving. Buddhism is polar opposite, and Buddhist philosophy is the ultimate way that is beneficial to one and to all.

@@danskdna8550 thank you, so do I just look them up on RUclips or internet. I was poisoned by radiation 20 years ago on deployment in war. The ptsd is manageable, but the ailments from radiation isn't so. No help from the civilian doctors in my town or any from military.

Who is the psychiatrist Brother Hill mentions? Is that talk available?
I love that these two men differentiated between what is a coincidence and what constitutes a synchronicity according to Jung. Many people conflate the two, sending others on a path of trying to figure out the meaning of each coincidence in their life. When it’s a synchronicity, you know what it means as it happens! That is inherent in its nature and what makes it worthy of our interest.
I also love what the friar had to say about continuing to question. My dad and I talked a lot about philosophy and spirituality. He didn’t like religion because he couldn’t believe anyone who claimed they knew God more than him. He didn’t want to call himself an agnostic, though, because he did believe there was something more. He described his spirituality as such, sometimes the question is more sacred than finding the answer. It meant so much to me that I have a tattoo symbolizing this, and spoke about human nature’s propensity for awe and mystery in his eulogy.
Interesting. May I ask what the tattoo is? What symbolizes this idea for you?
@@MsDameQ My dad was an outdoorsman and this affirmed his spiritual beliefs because the more he learned about nature, the more he saw how complex and connected everything is. The more he learned, the more he realized he didn’t know.
So, I got a tattoo of a deer with really long antlers painted like a nebula. It is purple and blue, looks brushed on and unfinished. I was looking for spiritual answers after he and my sister died, I wanted to know for certain. And this tattoo, for me, is saying that it is ok to just sit with the question and be open to mystery.

02. A BRIEF SYNOPSIS OF “LIFE”:
Everything, both perceptible and imperceptible - that is, any gross or subtle OBJECT within the material universe which can ever be perceived with the cognitive faculties, plus the SUBJECT (the observer of all phenomena) - is to what most persons generally refer when they use the term “God”, since they usually conceive of the Primeval Creator as being the Perfect Person, and “God” (capitalized) is a personal epithet of the Unconditioned Absolute. However, this anthropomorphized conception of The Absolute is a fictional character of divers mythologies.
According to most every enlightened sage in the history of this planet, Ultimate Reality is, far more logically, Impersonal Absolute NOTHINGNESS (otherwise called “The Tao”, “The Great Spirit”, “Brahman”, “Pure Consciousness”, “Eternal Awareness”, “Independent Existence”, “The Ground of All Being”, “Uncaused Nature”, “The Undifferentiated Substratum of Reality”, “The Unified Field”, et cetera).
In other words, rather than the Supreme Truth being a separate Blissful, Supra-Conscious Being (The Godhead Himself or The Goddess), Ultimate Reality is Eternal-Existence Limitless-Awareness Unconditional-Peace ITSELF.
Because the Unmanifested Absolute is infinite creative potentiality, “it” actualizes as EVERYTHING, in the form of temporary, cyclical universes. In the case of our particular universe, we reside in a cosmos consisting of space-time, matter and energy, without, of course, neglecting the most fundamental dimension of existence (i.e. conscious awareness - although, “it” is, being the subject, by literal definition, non-existent).
Just as a knife cannot cut itself, nor the mind comprehend itself, nor the eyes see themselves, The Absolute cannot know Itself (or at least objectively EXPERIENCE Itself), and so, has manifested this phenomenal universe within Itself for the purpose of experiencing Itself, particularly through the lives of self-aware beings, such as we sophisticated humans. Therefore, this world of duality is really just a play of consciousness within Consciousness, in the same way that a dream is a person's sleeping narrative set within the life-story of an 'awakened' individual.
APPARENTLY, this phenomenal universe was created with the primal act (the so-called “Big Bang”), which started, supposedly, as a minute, slightly uneven ball of light, which in turn, was instigated, ultimately, by Extra-Temporal Supra-Consciousness. From that first deed, every motion or action that has ever occurred has been a direct (though, almost exclusively, an indirect) result of it.
Just as all the extant energy in the universe was once contained within the inchoate singularity, Infinite Consciousness was NECESSARILY present at the beginning of the universe, and is in no way an epiphenomenon of a neural network. Discrete consciousness, on the other hand, is entirely dependent on the neurological faculty of individual animals (the more highly-evolved the species, the greater its cognitive abilities).
“Sarvam khalvidam brahma” (a Sanskrit maxim from the “Chandogya Upanishad”, meaning ‘all this is indeed Brahman’ or ‘everything is the Universal Self alone’). There is NAUGHT but Eternal Being, Conscious Awareness, Causeless Peace - and you are, quintessentially, that!
This “Theory of Everything” can be more succinctly expressed by the mathematical equation:
E=A͚ (Everything equates to Infinite Awareness).
HUMANS are essentially this Eternally-Aware-Peace, acting through an extraordinarily-complex biological organism, comprised of the eight rudimentary elements - pseudo-ego (the assumed sense of self), intellect, mind, solids, liquids, gases, heat (fire), and ether (three-dimensional space). When one peers into a mirror, one doesn’t normally mistake the reflected image to be one’s real self, yet that is how we humans conventionally view our ever-mutating forms. We are, rather, in a fundamental sense, that which witnesses all transitory appearances.
Everything which can be presently perceived, both tangible and immaterial, including we human beings, is a culmination of that primary manifestation. That is the most accurate and rational explanation for “karma” - everything was preordained from the initial spark, and every action since has unfolded as it was predestined in ETERNITY, via an ever-forward-moving trajectory. The notion of retributive (“tit for tat”) karma is just that - an unverified belief. Likewise, the notion of a distinct, reincarnating “soul” or “spirit” is largely a fallacious belief.
Whatever state in which we currently find ourselves, is the result of two factors - our genetic make-up at conception and our present-life conditioning (which may include mutating genetic code). Every choice ever made by every human and non-human animal was determined by those two factors ALONE. Therefore, free-will is purely illusory, despite what most believe.
As a consequence of residing within this dualistic universe, we experience a lifelong series of fluctuating, transient pleasures and pains, which can take the form of physical, emotional, and/or financial pleasure or pain. Surprisingly to most, suffering and pain are NOT synonymous.
Suffering is due to a false sense of personal 'doership' - the belief that one is a separate, independent author of one’s thoughts, emotions, and deeds, and that, likewise, other persons are autonomous agents, with complete volition to act, think, and feel as they wish. Another way of stating the same concept is: suffering is due to the intellect being unwilling or unable to accept life as it manifests moment by moment.
There are five SYMPTOMS of suffering, all of which are psychological in nature:
1. Guilt
2. Blame
3. Pride
4. Anxiety
5. Regrets about the past and expectations for the future
These types of suffering are the result of not properly understanding what was explained above - that life is a series of happenings and NOT caused by the individual living beings. No living creature, including Homo sapiens, has personal free-will. There is only the Universal, Divine Will at play, acting through every body, to which William Shakespeare famously alluded when he scribed “All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players.”
The human organism is essentially a biopsychological machine, comprised of the five gross material elements and the three subtle material elements, listed above.
The ANTIDOTE to all mental anguish is to firstly discern pain from suffering, then to achieve complete relief from that miserable state of existence, by abandoning the erroneous belief in personal authorship, and abiding in the primordial sense of being (the unqualified “I am”, which is one's core identity). This is the very same peace which is experienced each night during the dreamless phase of the sleep cycle. This 'resting imperturbably as Flawless Awareness' can be practiced on a regular basis, until it is fully assimilated and integrated into one's life.
Every person, from time immemorial, has been either intentionally or unwittingly seeking such causeless peace, most commonly by practicing one of the four systems of YOGA (religion) delineated in the sixteenth chapter of this work, or else in creating wealth and the acquisition of material possessions, or in psycho-physical pleasures. That peace of mind is often referred to as “happiness”, “joy”, or “love”, and often presumed to be a temporal state, since many assume, incorrectly, that continuous peace is unavailable in this life.
Fortunately, that is not the case - it is eminently possible to live one's life acquainted with unbroken peace of mind, if destined.
Following DHARMA (frameworks of authentic religion and societal duties) is not guaranteed to achieve that desired tranquillity of mind, but even so, it is beneficial for individuals, since it establishes a structure which enables one to more easily elevate oneself beyond the mundane, animalistic platform (i.e. the base pursuits of eating, sleeping and mating). Intrinsic to dharma is the division of the adult male population into the four classes of society and the inherent role of girls and women in society, as fully elucidated in latter chapters of this Holy Scripture.
So, now that you understand life, and the reason why we are suffering here in this (ostensively) material universe, you are now able to become liberated from all mental suffering, RIGHT?
WRONG! It is imperative to approach an authentic spiritual master to assist you to come to the above realization, by slowly undoing your past conditioning. Just as you have been conditioned over an entire lifetime to think one way, you need to be re-conditioned to think another way (in alignment with your essential identity as The Divine). For one who has himself for a teacher, that man has a veritable fool as his teacher.
Even if you adhere closely to the precepts of a competent teacher, you may still not come to a full understanding of life, but if you are sincere, humble and dedicated, you will definitely find more peace in your daily life - all of which was DESTINED to occur, of course.
Furthermore, if you are suitably-qualified and it was ordained, you may be fortunate enough to receive discipline from one of the EXTREMELY rare fully-enlightened masters residing on earth at any given time (perchance even the current World Teacher himself), and subsequently realize the aforementioned fundamental concepts, by diligently studying authoritative doctrines (especially the most accurate and complete of all extant Scriptures, this “Final Instruction Sheet for Humanity”), serving your guru with great reverence and devotion, and by deliberately avoiding undue harm to oneself, to other individuals, to society as a whole, and to the natural environment.

Also to add on to what I was just saying below, I recently dreamed I was in a beautiful bungalow in the jungle with my "real" family, who were Indian. In a central courtyard there was a beautiful reflecting pool in which I saw past, present and future. On waking I realised this was the same place I'd dreamt of years before.
Heaven and earth shall pass away but his word will not come back void. Period!!!

You start following sychronicities the best you will achieve will be a conduit to economic social success, but never spiritual wholeness or enlightenment. You might eventually even get set up by agencies and/or the rich, simulating sychronicities by watching you and placing things and people for you to hear and see.

I think it's important we do not project our shadow onto bodies of difference, whether that be size, colour, or ability.
Coincidences happen all the time. I once briefly met some guy, 3rd hand, from Newcastle, north of Sydney, via CB radio in Sydney, Australia and a few months later I heard his call-sign broadcasting long distance [ single side band ] from north of Sydney, from Newcastle, as I was way down south in the State, hundreds of miles south of Sydney. In the late 1990s me and my dad drove from one town to another nearby town and a woman was walking up the hill as we were departing and as we returned to the home town 5 or 6 hours later she was walking down the hill at about the same spot alongside the road.
I am one with All That Is. I am sensitive to the energies around me. I acknowledge about the personal internal "happenings" within the small self (ego body) reflected out in the world of the collective consciousness. We are all reflections of eachother just like the nature reflects the connection of each other in the grand scheme. But because humans became so distant and think disconnected with All That Is, thus nature reflects back the disconnection and the internalized happening of each individual ---however it triggers the individual within the collective. --this is how I interpret and give meaning to the energies synchronostically happening all the time when one becomes aware of personal relationship with All That Is or in other words, "I Am". Yes, dreams, too are ways of the Consciousness to communicate with us, most of the time, dreams bleed through somehow blend in with our daily life. I am glad about your video! I believe that the stars have aligned to educate many about our deep relationship with the Psyche through feeling and beconing aware of our thoughts. this way, we are able to guide our thoughts to FEEL Well Beingness in alignment. There is no such thing as a coincidence in YHWH, in Yeshuah ha Mashiach through the Ruach Ha Qodesh there is power and strength, I believe in the Word of God, more than I believe in every thing else that men have taught me.

I once wanted to see this show on HBO so bad and when the episode finally aired i missed it due to obligations and then forgot about it a few hours until somewhere around 3-4 AM and immediately put the show on... A few minutes into the show I noticed a license plate on a "getaway vehicle" and for some reason looked at the clock to notice the time was the same as the numbers on the plate... This was one in a series of events that were happening often that let me know for SURE that something bigger was going on in my life and guiding me.
This information is thought provoking and fascinating.

I don't agree with your example of "synchronicity." If your sister suddenly became sick at three in the morning, and you knew about it in your sleep, that would be an example of pure psychic communication... mind to mind. For me, the best definition of the term came when a friend was trying to explain to a fellow alcoholic to, "Let go and let God" to help him to stop drinking, as they were driving down the street. At that precise moment, a car suddenly swerved into their lane, almost hitting them. On the car's license plate it read: "LET GOD." That, my friend, is synchronicity.

Here's another great example of "synchronicity." There was a young actress named, "Wynona Horowitz." She didn't like her last name, so when she was driving down the street with her girlfriends talking about it, a Ryder truck drove by and her girlfriend noticed the name. Today, she is known as "Wynona Ryder."

Me naturally. Artistic people for example are extra empathic. Others may have to pay attention more ....shut off the noise....pay attention to nature....its about following intuition and paying attention to details and being in a good vibration place.

Just because one believes "I want this but I'm accepting of whatever I get" doesn't necessarily mean that one gets what they want and it is also true for the opposite. Just because one accepts or believes, doesn't mean one will receive and just because one doesn't believe, doesn't mean one won't receive. The universe is unpredictable and most events are more random than we'd like to believe it to be.
We can only increase or decrease the probability

The initial examples sound like premonitions far more than synchronicity. Synch is more like something you need showing up in your life when you need it or recognize your need for it.
I agree. Loved the video and talk as well as Jung and his ideas but this didn’t really stick with me. However any talk and conversation about this is always good to me.
Premonition is knowing in advance. Synchronicity is knowing at the time it is occuring and you physically participate.
I've had many spine-tingling experiences of synchronicity in my life. The same word - one I'd never heard before - turning up in a couple of books I'd picked up at random from the Library, then hearing the same word in an ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) program, all in a matter of days. Dreaming of a guy with two huge hounds straining on leashes, then seeing one the very next day. Also - this is a bit off topic, but perhaps still relevant - used creative visualisation to actively imagine myself living in a very specific spot under huge flowering trees near a river, and months later, found myself doing that. And a few years later using a set of runes I'd made from stones picked up randomly from beaches, wondering what would happen next, turned over the rune Perth, where I was offered a lecturing post the following week.
And for every one of your good self it "working" for im sure there's been 100's if not 1000's whereby nothing occurs...

It happens all the time for me and has all my life....my dreams, when younger, always came to be..yet i only realised as the action was occuring in reality, the dreams could be years before. Your suggestion of creative visualisation is totally relevant, again, i dont actively use it but it's subconciously always in my mind...hard to explain but it's like a "knowing" i will achieve whatever i set my mind on...no doubts. My point is there are those who dont experience certain outcomes for many varied reasons. In the end all is as it should be.
@@3SeveredHeads I had that sense of "knowing" for the three years I spent in Family Court opposing my abusive and violent husband in what looked like a very uneven custody battle - me, penniless, alone, against his five-person legal team. But I had a good mind, research experience, a will to protect myself and my daughter, and knowledge of my own purity of intention. I prayed every day before going into court. Even if I had not got every single thing right - legal process is extremely complex, formalised and ritualised - as you describe, I would walk into that courtroom filled with that sense of "inner knowing". And, I did prevail.

At 1:00, I paraphrase, there is nothing we can do to make this happen, ie the surfacing of subconscious material in the form of synchronicities. Not quite the full story. What can we do? Meditation (and prayer) is the method by which this creates a pathway for this to happen. When it does happen it's always a surprise! Hence grace! Meditation quiets the habituated chatter (masculine grasping) to be receptive (feminine) to synchronicities. Jean Klein: "Meditation is waiting without waiting."

People are connecting with their spiritual self and realising that our precious home is being threatened and are standing up to fight against this.
I woke up at 4:30ish. I don’t remember the exact time anymore. But I never woke up that early. And I decided the turn the TV on. I also never do this before school (I was in Middle school at the time). I saw the first building on fire. Ran into my parents room to show them and we watched the second plane hit live. This was on 9/11 if it wasn’t obvious

I have a problem with heights myself. In a way I also have a problem with guns to, but if it’s a means to defend yourself so be it, but to take another persons life is also like taking apart of your life to, so yeah I kinda have a problem with guns. Target practice is fun, but for that purpose only. Also have a problem with staircases amazingly.
