I hate when people say that " you sound so white" or " you act white " I felt pressured to embrace my culture because others around me were embracing it more than and I was. I felt like I didn't speak patois enough or know how to say it properly and all I can say is I know it now I know my culture and just because I speak proper English doesn't mean I sound white English isn't a race specific language.

Tteokbokki is the rice dumpling you're thinking of. Also if you like korean food or want to try to make korean food or even if you just want japanese snacks, look up an H-Mart in your area. They have tons of korean and japanese food snacks and drinks with a mixture of some american things too that are popular in those countries. Also depending on the one you go to, they have cake shops and even small stores inside of the H-Mart. The one closest to me has a cake shop called tous le jours with amazing macarons, roll cakes, and even milk bread and stuff! You'd love it! My mom got shrimp chips and my sister got the ingredients to make tteokbokki!

Squished fruit? No problem! Tiny green trees? No way satan!! It can be outright exhausting sometimes xD

Like not looking like a normal Chinese person, or even Japanese and Korean, since looking more like an Asian shows you’re part of this culture. Like Japanese has anime, manga, etc., and South Korea has Kpop, food etc. Meanwhile China has communism, concentration camps, the coronavirus, and other negative things that make me want to be more disassociated with, even though I really want to associate with the more beautiful parts of China. Honestly I can't believe I went to this video not because of Korean because I live in Puerto Rico andI was born in the state some of my parents divorced I lived in Puerto Rico and I still live there and I still prefer to speak English then Spanish I used to speak Spanish when I was younger and more often but because I lived in the states I started speaking English and now I just go completely English I still speak Spanish for school or for some of my relatives but I'm actually speak English
I do understand thiis fully. I'm half Mexican and when I was little, I was picking up on Spanish very well. That is, until I started going to school. The teachers didn't like me speaking Spanish for whatever reason so they enrolled me in an English speaking class against my parents wishes. Over time, my ability to speak Spanish became less and less. And I guess it got to the point where it just died in me. I tried relearning in high school and in college but hardly any of it stuck. I felt so ashamed that I was unable to hold a conversation with anyone on my dad's side of the family. I was also upset when I couldn't speak to my Grandmother ove the phone, who lived in Mexico, before she passed away and I knew she loved me, even though we never met. It has been one of my biggest regrets because I just wanted her to know that I loved her and wished to meet her one day.

I (a 12 y/o black-latinix), went on a field trip with the mean, spanish bad boy. Midway through it we were talking about our ethnicities and I made the comment that I was black-latinix, and he had the FUCKING AUDACITY to say "what a shame!". I BURST CRYING FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE TRIP!!! And the entire time afterthefact was complaining to anyone who would listen, that of all the things I would change about myself was to change my ethnicity from black/mexican/elsalvedorian to black/white.
Unlike Emily, my peers who I don't usually talk to will take advantage of the fact that I am hispanic/latino. They will tease me because of it by calling to things like Pina Colada "expired milk," which actually hurt me because it is something from my culture. They would also say things like, "your name is so white." And this hurt me so much. Just a little rant, but I know why Emily would feel un-proud of her culture or feel pressure to follow things on that certain culture or religion.
Me and family speak a mixture of the some of the South African official languages in the house, as me and my siblings speak English majority of the time, instead of our home language, which is Setswana

I remember in school we were on the topic of food. This was in primary. Kids were sharing their favorite food and I remember saying how I love tacos de cabeza. Which is tacos of meat, specifically meat from a cows head. The reaction I got from the rest beside another from Mexican-America student was like they were weirded out. They told me that was disgusting and stuff. Like I get if you never heard of it and more over eat it, still, it’s not cool to just shame someone because of something you find different. Or when kids would make Spanish words like puta as a joke, like making fun of the way we would say it and the word in general. It may have been a harmless joke but it just didn’t sit right with me. Uh sorry, just a little rant.😅
haha, the disconnect is a bit of an understatement for me... I live in a big family, and everybody speaks Chinese, only me and my sister are completely fluent in English. But it's only my sister who's completely bilingual. Whenever I talk with my parents, I always respond in English when they speak Chinese, and I've been doing it since I was very little. I guess it helped that I also live with my grandparents and cousins since none of them can speak any English, and it forced me to talk, but it's still awkward. I oftentimes feel embarrassed whenever I messed up a pronunciation, or if I don't know how to say a certain word, and I guess that lead to me giving extra attention to my English since I thought, whelp if I suck at one thing then I might as well be good at the other. I have a massive language barrier with all my other relatives, and it makes me wonder why. I am Chinese but born in America, but I have other Chinese friends who are fluent, so why can't I be like them? I've never even worn a Hanfu dress before or prayed. And it's even worse since my sister is completely fluent in Chinese, but I'm not. She was born in a more Chinese related area, whereas I was born in a pretty American White area which I guess influenced it but still... idk it's just really annoying to have to deal with myself and seeing others who are bilingual, sometimes I wonder if I even count as Chinese, will my children be able to speak Chinese? Will they be even worse than me?

I come from Asia but I’m not Korean or Japanese or Chinese or anything I speak Arabic and come from an Arabic Country BUT I RELATED SO MUCH TO THE “wow your English is great I don’t hear an accent” it’s not that it’s annoying but until this day I get a little shy about speaking English without an accent because it leads to a whole string of questions and I have to explain to them that yes I did study in my own Country and not in America but I just studied in a private school that followed the rules, regards and lessons that American schools do. I also did the same replying to my parents with English thing but now I’ve really Improved since moving into a more Arabic based school and I speak Arabic 90% of the time now. It’s really fun to relate to these things even thought our situations are so different!
What I recommend is that if you watch a show way to much over and over again you can translate to a language you want to learn it help for me so yeah i you understood what they’re saying so yeah I recommend it that’s what I did to learn more Spanish and watch videos how to speak the language to. :)
Does anybody remember Rabidz they had a whole episode on how racism is stupid if you don’t know Rabidz Just look it up but they’re basically very weird insane rabbit creatures they act all crazy and they had a video game called Rabidz go to the moon But basically the episode was they put them in a test chamber and then colored one of them blue and then put him in there with the white ones and then the white ones were curious and want to check and see what the blue one is and then they turned on him and then they created a whole bunch of blue ones and then they like teamed up together to defeat each other. It was really funny and really stupid and there were more colors involved.
I relate with this but it's odd, like I'm not entirely sure how I relate to it. I don't know my own ethnicity very well, I know I have some Hispanic heritage from my mom's side and something European from my dad but I don't really feel like part of any sort of culture. I'm American, born and raised, and yet I barely feel like that either. It's like I have no culture at all, and like how she pushed away that Korean part of herself it's like I hesitate to embrace any sort of heritage or identity. It's really strange.
I am a South Indian but don't know ANY Malayalam! I also am exceptionally good at English and don't have an accent!! (i take it as a personal achievement xD). It does feel really weird meeting my relatives and not knowing what they r talking about...even tho I'm just 11, IDK if id really want to learn Malayalam. Like they say kids can be cruel they go up to a guy that their mom told them was divorce and then be like hey my mom told me you are divorced how did that happen who left you and why because kids.
My dad unfortunately turned to meth to deal with some of issues that came with being part japanese and having an abusive/racist dad. I'm also part native american so back when I was a kid if people weren't being mean to me about being native they bullied me for being japanese which sadly got a bit worse when we started to learn about pearl harbor in school, most of the kids were Christian so that made me pretty wary of anyone who was religious. I'm not anymore and I understand not all of them are racist, however I definitely have a thicker skin now and I'm pretty close to my heritage.
SO TRUE same here but different because I am Mexican but I was born in Sacramento the capital of California and if I respond to my parents in English I still understand them even though I can't speak it as well...and I am VERY awkward with my relatives in my moms side since they are fully Mexican as in my dad side he is Mexican American...
I am american because I was born in America and this is because my mother although my mom was born in the Philippines when came to this country for a better life and eventually earn her citizenship and had me. I can understand filipino,say a complement or curse in tagalog, and Hold a halfway conversation in tagalog (mainly because my mom tends to curse at other drivers 😋) but I can't say a lot of words in filipino but whenever I speak to my moms friends in filipino they are always like "wow she can speak tagalo. Wow amazing" and I would feel bad because I can't always hold out a full conversation so what I would subconsciously do is when I can't speak or know certain words in tagalog I would say the words in English with a filipino accent. American citizen with filipino- American blood, I'm a hybrid 😛
Yeah I've been in this situation before, my dad is uhm... Puerto Rican and I feel like every time my mom speaks whatever kind of Spanish to him like I'm being left our so in 8th grade (If I even make it to 8th T^T) I'm going to desperately try and learn whatever Spanish they are speaking! Unlike Emily, my peers who I don't usually talk to will take advantage of the fact that I am hispanic/latino. They will tease me because of it by calling to things like Pina Colada "expired milk," which actually hurt me because it is something from my culture. They would also say things like, "your name is so white." And this hurt me so much. Just a little rant, but I know why Emily would feel un-proud of her culture or feel pressure to follow things on that certain culture or religion.
Me and family speak a mixture of the some of the South African official languages in the house, as me and my siblings speak English majority of the time, instead of our home language, which is Setswana

I remember in school we were on the topic of food. This was in primary. Kids were sharing their favorite food and I remember saying how I love tacos de cabeza. Which is tacos of meat, specifically meat from a cows head. The reaction I got from the rest beside another from Mexican-America student was like they were weirded out. They told me that was disgusting and stuff. Like I get if you never heard of it and more over eat it, still, it’s not cool to just shame someone because of something you find different. Or when kids would make Spanish words like puta as a joke, like making fun of the way we would say it and the word in general. It may have been a harmless joke but it just didn’t
sit right with me. Uh sorry, just a little rant.😅
haha, the disconnect is a bit of an understatement for me... I live in a big family, and everybody speaks Chinese, only me and my sister are completely fluent in English. But it's only my sister who's completely bilingual. Whenever I talk with my parents, I always respond in English when they speak Chinese, and I've been doing it since I was very little. I guess it helped that I also live with my grandparents and cousins since none of them can speak any English, and it forced me to talk, but it's still awkward. I oftentimes feel embarrassed whenever I messed up a pronunciation, or if I don't know how to say a certain word, and I guess that lead to me giving extra attention to my English since I thought, whelp if I suck at one thing then I might as well be good at the other. I have a massive language barrier with all my other relatives, and it makes me wonder why. I am Chinese but born in America, but I have other Chinese friends who are fluent, so why can't I be like them? I've never even worn a Hanfu dress before or prayed. And it's even worse since my sister is completely fluent in Chinese, but I'm not. She was born in a more Chinese related area, whereas I was born in a pretty American White area which I guess influenced it but still... idk it's just really annoying to have to deal with myself and seeing others who are bilingual, sometimes I wonder if I even count as Chinese, will my children be able to speak Chinese? Will they be even worse than me?

I come from Asia but I’m not Korean or Japanese or Chinese or anything I speak Arabic and come from an Arabic Country BUT I RELATED SO MUCH TO THE “wow your English is great I don’t hear an accent” it’s not that it’s annoying but until this day I get a little shy about speaking English without an accent because it leads to a whole string of questions and I have to explain to them that yes I did study in my own Country and not in America but I just studied in a private school that followed the rules, regards and lessons that American schools do. I also did the same replying to my parents with English thing but now I’ve really Improved since moving into a more Arabic based school and I speak Arabic 90% of the time now. It’s really fun to relate to these things even thought our situations are so different!
What I recommend is that if you watch a show way to much over and over again you can translate to a language you want to learn it help for me so yeah i you understood what they’re saying so yeah I recommend it that’s what I did to learn more Spanish and watch videos how to speak the language to. :)

Does anybody remember Rabidz they had a whole episode on how racism is stupid if you don’t know Rabidz Just look it up but they’re basically very weird insane rabbit creatures they act all crazy and they had a video game called Rabidz go to the moon But basically the episode was they put them in a test chamber and then colored one of them blue and then put him in there with the white ones and then the white ones were curious and want to check and see what the blue one is and then they turned on him and then they created a whole bunch of blue ones and then they like teamed up together to defeat each other. It was really funny and really stupid and there were more colors involved.
I relate with this but it's odd, like I'm not entirely sure how I relate to it. I don't know my own ethnicity very well, I know I have some Hispanic heritage from my mom's side and something European from my dad but I don't really feel like part of any sort of culture. I'm American, born and raised, and yet I barely feel like that either. It's like I have no culture at all, and like how she pushed away that Korean part of herself it's like I hesitate to embrace any sort of heritage or identity. It's really strange.

I am a South Indian but don't know ANY Malayalam! I also am exceptionally good at English and don't have an accent!! (i take it as a personal achievement xD). It does feel really weird meeting my relatives and not knowing what they r talking about...even tho I'm just 11, IDK if id really want to learn Malayalam. I do know some Hindi tho so I just stick to that.

Like they say kids can be cruel they go up to a guy that their mom told them was divorce and then be like hey my mom told me you are divorced how did that happen who left you and why because kids.
My dad unfortunately turned to meth to deal with some of issues that came with being part japanese and having an abusive/racist dad. I'm also part native american so back when I was a kid if people weren't being mean to me about being native they bullied me for being japanese which sadly got a bit worse when we started to learn about pearl harbor in school, most of the kids were Christian so that made me pretty wary of anyone who was religious. I'm not anymore and I understand not all of them are racist, however I definitely have a thicker skin now and I'm pretty close to my heritage.

SO TRUE same here but different because I am Mexican but I was born in Sacramento the capital of California and if I respond to my parents in English I still understand them even though I can't speak it as well...and I am VERY awkward with my relatives in my moms side since they are fully Mexican as in my dad side he is Mexican American...

I am american because I was born in America and this is because my mother although my mom was born in the Philippines when came to this country for a better life and eventually earn her citizenship and had me. I can understand filipino,say a complement or curse in tagalog, and Hold a halfway conversation in tagalog (mainly because my mom tends to curse at other drivers 😋) but I can't say a lot of words in filipino but whenever I speak to my moms friends in filipino they are always like "wow she can speak tagalo. Wow amazing" and I would feel bad because I can't always hold out a full conversation so what I would subconsciously do is when I can't speak or know certain words in tagalog I would say the words in English with a filipino accent. American citizen with filipino- American blood, I'm a hybrid 😛
Yeah I've been in this situation before, my dad is uhm... Puerto Rican and I feel like every time my mom speaks whatever kind of Spanish to him like I'm being left our so in 8th grade (If I even make it to 8th T^T) I'm going to desperately try and learn whatever Spanish they are speaking! (Why do I feel like this is a bad ide that is going to lead me further into this deep cave of anxiety and depression every turn I take)
